The Beatles - Rockin' At The Star Club 1962

  • Here are 24 rockers from the best available Star Club tapes from late December 1962. Using the bootleg "Magnetophone Band" (mono version) as my source, I have painstakingly smoothed out the lurching sound levels, both within each track, and from track to track, to create the smoothest possible listen from start to finish.
    00:00 Seventeen, 03:23 Red Hot, 04:53 Kansas City, 07:32 Shimmy Shimmy, 10:10 Reminiscing, 12:18 Red Sails In The Sunset, 15:01 Sweet Little 16, 17:57 Roll Over Beethoven, 20:29 Nothin' Shakin', 22:01 Seventeen, 25:06 Everybody's Trying To Be My Baby, 27:47 Where Have You Been All My Life, 30:25 Lend Me Your Comb, 32:25 Your Feets Too Big, 34:55 Talking About You, 36:58 Matchbox, 39:37 Little Queenie, 43:39 Hippy Hippy Shake, 45:35 Ask Me Why, 48:01 Besame Mucho, 50:47 Mr Moonlight, 53:00 I'm Gonna Sit Right Down & Cry, 54:51 Talking About You, 56:51 Long Tall Sally.

      Sounds good! The Execs at Decca said guitar 🎸 groups were going out so they weren’t interested in signing the Beatles and passed on them. Then after the Beatles comes Hendrix and Zeppelin. Then the Sex Pistols and Ramones all relied heavily on their guitar sound. Then in 1977 along comes EVH. Then in 1991 comes Nirvana. Then in 2000 comes the White Stripes. All rely on the guitar.
      What those dopes didn’t realize is how versatile the electric guitar 🎸 is. It can play melodies, chords, rhythms and even be percussive. The guitar won out!

    December, 1962 - so, about 4 months after Pete was sent packing and Ringo replaced him. You can hear how assertive he is on the drums, how he drives the beat. The band sounds really tight here - just great musicianship.

      Suprise , suprise. Another member of the Ringo made the Beatles Fan Club. He was not that good. With a line up Lennon, McCartney and Harrison they would have made it big irrespective of the drummer in my opinion

      Even though AI was able to separate John’s voice from a tape in which it was only him and a piano, I’m not sure it’s good enough yet to really bring this recording to a releasable quality, considering all the instrumentation and background noise on it. I’m sure it will be someday, but maybe not for another 10 years. It still needs further development, in my opinion.

    Mr. Jones... this is a triumph of skill and effort on your part. Obtaining a much higher quality source to work from is obviously a key element, but your patience, gear, and tech ability
    are worthy of genuine recognition. A tribute to all who have been involved from time of recording, to re discovering, and careful preservation of the the tape. If anyone who hears what you are offering with this upload still lives in the the land of denial re: Pete Best, they have no hope of surviving in the real world. Ringo is the accelerant that allowed
    a mania to explode. If this quality was available in 1977, it's likely EMI would have wanted to
    issue the recording themselves.

    • @RobBarton-np1nq
      @RobBarton-np1nq 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yes all those sad members of the Pete Best Fan Club, can't admit to themselves, how much The Beatles improved after Ringo's arrival. Pete Best's drumming on surviving Beatle recordings can be likened to someone hitting drums with a wet lettuce leaf. He had no swing, dubious timing and sat behind the drums like a preening surly peacock. Good riddance...

    • @charlyW34
      @charlyW34 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hi. I obviously agree, perhaps not so much with the peacock comment,
      but regarding the Pete fan club, it's more like a cult of denial or pity party.
      the entire legacy of Pete's life is sad, because he had such a massive opportunity to turn his time in the Beatles into a HUGE cash cow and permanent party invitation. His brooding personality largely prevented that course of action, and is a primary reason that he had to go. @@RobBarton-np1nq

      @@RobBarton-np1nq There's such a huge difference between pre-Ringo Beatles and Ringo Beatles that to me they weren't really THE BEATLES until Ringo joined. This recording shows how great they were with Ringo, even just after he'd joined.
      As for Pete Best, he might actually be lucky that they fired him. With Pete and without Ringo, The Beatles might not have been popular enough to continue - they were rejected by Decca (while Pete was the drummer) for good reason. But with Ringo, The Beatles became so big that Pete could have a nice career as "the almost Beatle". Lucky Pete.

  • @puskascat
    @puskascat 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

    The Beatles were a step change in how rock'n'roll was composed, performed and created, but Astrid Kirchherr and her Hamburg pals as the original Beatles fans and artistic apostles were a massive change in how it and its players were perceived, supported and its aesthetic disseminated. Her photos are phenomenal.

    I'm anxiously awaiting a high-tech cleaned-up release of the 1958 recording of The Quarrymen's (w/Paul & George) performance with Lennon singing That'll Be The Day by Buddy Holly, AND the July 6th 1957 incomplete recordings of The Quarrymen (before Paul & George joined, Paul was there watching and met John, auditioned and joined) with Lennon singing Puttin' On The Style (Lonnie Donegan's #1 hit at that time) and
    Baby Let's Play House (Elvis's hit).
    It would be so cool if Lennon's discography is extended back to 1957!

    I was a kid in Europe the spring of 68. I stayed in a hostel not far from the Star Club. Of course the Beatles were long gone, but it looked just like the dive it was a few years earlier, hookers everywhere. Hamburg was a pretty rough port city then. Germany was still ascending from the rubble of WW2. They were doing a hell of a lot better than England though. I lived in the East End for the rest of the year. It looked like the bombing had ended just the week before. Wages were crap. I got 8 pounds 14 shillings a week after tax. Barely covered my beer! A friends girlfriend work for the law firm that handled Johns divorce. I remember seeing copies of birth certificates, and other records like marriage documents. May I firstly say thank you x infinity for sharing this. Can I ask please; do you have knowledge of who was on the drums in this recording? Pete Best? I know Ringo joined them in 1962, I don’t know if he ever played any gigs with them in Hamburg? If it is Pete Best, then as a drummer myself, I would have to say he fulfilled the role on drums well and quite solidly. That’s not to say had Best been kept on that he would come up with iconic drum parts that Ringo did; eg Ticket To Ride, In My Life, Come Together, Tomorrow Never Knows (the title is attributed to one of Ringo’s many malapropism’s) and many other tracks.😊

Pete was not a bad drummer but Ringo is Ringo and so right for this band. A human drum machine with taste.

      B@@peterjones9700 Well, I dug out my copy of The Complete Beatles Recording Sessions. They worked on a bunch of songs in the studio in Sept snd Oct 1962 and Jan 1963, none of which were Saw Her Standing There. They worked on Saw Her Standing There on Feb 11th and 25th 1963, and the first album was released on March 22, 1963 in England. They performed gigs at The Star club in Hamburg in June 1962 for their first gigs at The Star, and from Dec 18 to Dec 31, 1962 according to online research and TCBRS. So, this recording from the Dec 1962 gigs is after they had started recording songs for the first album but before they recorded Saw Her Standing There in studio inFeb 1963. So, I stand corrected, by myself as well as you guys! There is also an interview with Paul in TCBRS, where he is asked when they wrote Saw Her Standing There, and he says he and John "sagged off school" and wrote it at Paul's house apparently playing hooky from school, which supports the info above from you both about timing of writing and playing vs recording. Are there any tapes of the June 1962 Star Club gigs?
