(Not sure on the spelling) A young lady I knew growing up named Penelope went by Nel, her mother was Pearl, she had a sister Peony. My Mother often named calves after real families she knew. For your new calf, I am entering the name of Christina from the movie Penelope. That is the name of the actress who played the Penelope character. She is really a good looking calf. I grew up on a cattle ranch near Sheridan Wyoming and love to see you and your Dad, especially your Dad, during calving season. It reminds me of my life from 60 years ago. Calving hasn't changed that much in that time frame. Calves come the same way and moms still get protective. And the weather still gets crazy on an unknown schedule.

I just read that if you can collect the embryonic fluid or soak it up with a towel, it is helpful to get some on the substitute calf. I also read embryonic fluid from any cow will do. I haven't tried it, but it makes sence.
My wife said that her grandfather would pour vanilla extract on the foster calf and put it on the cows noise. The foster mother would smell only the vanilla and on the new calf. It's worth a try. She said it worked every time for her grandfather.

I think Penelope's calf should be named Blossom because its soon to be Spring and here's hoping the snows stop and the flower blossoms begin!! We've still just got never ending snow up here. Most of us old timers are saying that this is by far the deepest snows we have ever had up here. Man it is cold there don't envy you in snow country lived in it most of my life feed cows and horses hard keep in hay and mixed feed.. bottle calf are hard feed in the winter half to get up early heat the water for milk . Bottle were half cold by time you got to. barn. Last bottle at ten at night
