Bus drivers are people with bodily functions, not machines. I think sometimes people forget that.
It's true. You have to get creative when looking for a rest room. My last route, was so busy, I barely had time to use one, let alone go search for one... but holding it is not an option. And thank Goodness, my company, allows for restroom breaks when and as often as needed.
Well depending on the bus routes in my Bus depot, We usually do have bathroom facilities at the end and the beginning of the bus stop terminals. However there are certain exceptions if it’s a public facility chances are they may not open overnight so depending on the schedule we have to plan our time wisely as well as limit are liquid intake. But most of the time we use a subway station bath room if our bus stop is close to the facilities or go to a convenience store where the owners will allow us to use the bathroom. We would be lucky to have a break room at the end of the bus terminals Not only to use the bathroom but also take our meals until we resume our bus route services.
So glad you made a video on this subject. I hate Porta-Potties and avoid them whenever I can. And during the height of the pandemic it sucked with all the restrooms closed, even the train stations had their restrooms closed full time. I don't know what bus drivers did then but there was obviously little thought for that when all these places shut down. Unfortunately a number of routes here on Long Island end in the middle of nowhere, well, at least somewhere there isn't a restroom available. Especially in Suffolk County. If you're a guy and you don't have to do #2 I've seen bus drivers just find a patch of woods to relieve themselves in. I've had some bus drivers have to stop mid-route to use a restroom, and just stop the bus and leave us on while they run to use a restroom. Sometimes it just happens that way & I totally understand, although we all know some passengers don't. But there definitely needs some more thought given to where drivers can use restrooms. Of course if you have a route that has a coach bus with a bathroom like some on NJ Transit do, then it's not such an issue. But most routes don't have that luxury. It's a challenge I imagine for sure because you're supposed to drink plenty of water throughout the day to stay healthy, but then you have to keep finding somewhere to pee. But better that then dealing with Kidney Stones like I did a few months ago.
Big challenge. One that maybe makes it not the job for me but I don't know... If it can work maybe. Truckers just go in bottles or whatever because they have the privacy. It would be nice if buses had bathrooms in the back of it like Greyhounds do.
I remember being a brand new Subway Employee. They didn’t train me and I was just learning as I go… and a transit driver berated me for “moving too slow” because he was “on the clock.” I was 17 and was just taking the heat and apologizing 😅

During pandemic restaurants along my route i couldn't use....i had to find a bush
I am a School Bus driver. I just go to any Mall. But the mornings, McDonalds and Burger King is the only ones opened. I know of School Bus drivers that wear pampers so to avoid these places, but I don’t recommend because this would give you infections. I also know bus drivers that would not drink water because they don’t want to go to bathrooms, again this is dangerous and can cause your kidneys to bleed, which I have heard from Drivers that have done it. Just go to a Mall or any fast food restaurant.

In NYC, M60 SBS turns loop at LGA Airport. Sometimes bus driver politely announce Im going to restroom by Terminal A since restroom is closer.
On M4 bus, bus driver has key to Employee only restroom at 190th St A train or Cloister Museum.
The public transportation industrial complex has never been kind to the people that have to do the work.

In king county metro, operators must have access to a restroom at the terminals (end of the line) if there is none then the terminal gets moved. Look at our route 245 which has an odd terminal. It would loop around factoria and if they wanted to go to Kirkland it was a 15 minute wait at Eastgate. All because factoria had no restroom.
All of our transit centers have comfort stations (operator restrooms not open to the public), and some have restrooms for the public but those are separate.
Some routes do end at a park too but they have restrooms of some sort as well.
Our route 124 begins at Tukwila, which is a light rail station with restrooms for operators and the public. Not sure how many comfort stations for operators but they do share terminals with the A line which has frequent service so there's that issue (lots of operators so few restrooms what to do) . They then drive to seattle and change routes to the 24 and ultimately wind up at discovery park where there are Porta potties available. Yuck. And those are public as well.
Restrooms are vital.
At White Rock Centre there is no centralized loop, just a lot of on street bus stops. So for us to use the bathroom in between runs we just use the bathrooms at one of the restaurants or at the shopping mall.
My friend told me if no stores on the route….bring a cup. He told me this 😅

It's awful where some of these bus drivers get stuck on break.
Great video Keywan. Varies here in London. Some bus stands have those portable ones and others have shops and cafes nearby and some have nothing.
I ride a bus everyday, but it's a coach bus so it has a bathroom, that one is easier for the conductor. In your case, how about if you have to go and your bus has passengers all the way to last stop?
With that coach bus you do long distance driving then? It would be awesome if in the future most if not all city buses had a little bathroom in the back of it.
On Nassau County NICEBus, they use restroom at LIRR Waiting Room, Panera Bread at Walt Whitman Mall. At Roosevelt Field Mall Bus Terminal in Garden City, Mineola, driver has key to restroom.
At Jamaica Center, NICEBus driver had to wait for MTA dispatcher to unlock portable toilet used by MTA.
We have our two major bus hubs. So you try to hold it till you arrive. When COVID-19 hit and everything was shutdown it sucked.
Plus u gotta watch what you eat because I had some bad days when u gotta go right away woooooooo if u know u know

I also used hand sanitizer and disinfectant spray so I could spray my seat before I started my trip, I come on time so I could study the map before I get on the route. We don't get to choose what bus we drive neither, they just put us on the schedule and we have to do it. My friend that works for Greyhound in Chicago had to drive 8 hours from Chicago to Minneapolis and back to Chicago. He also quit riding Greyhound too.

About 30 years ago funny situation happend when a bus driver stopped the bus in the middle of the road and ran to the bushes during that time sometimes suicide bommers exploded in buses& malls so when the bus driver escaped from the bus all the passengers ran after him and saw him with his pants down

I can see the news story now. “Hero bus driver saves passengers from suicide bombers.” But when the media interviews the driver he’ll just give them the classic line from Forest Gump, “I just needed to go pee.”
At Meadowtown Shopping Centre the best bathroom options are the Blenz Coffee or the Real Canadian Superstore.

In the Netherlands de bus drivers can use the restroom the same as you do in your transit agency.
Here in the, San Francisco Bay Area. Various, transit agencies terminate at, major transfer points with other transit agencies. One AC Transit bus operator told me, at a transfer point in Milpitas, restrooms are only VTA bus operators not AC Transit at this location. They won't give us the code so we can use it. I have to wait, to get to the other end of the line to use our own restroom.
That’s sad. Rival transit agencies claiming restroom territories. That’s a new one.
Life is all about planning ahead ... get it? Planning a "head." ... (or latrine for us Army guys).

Yeah but they don't have privacy to use it while they're driving that's the problem.... Sometimes certain buses will have that little door thingy that kind of protects them but that's still no privacy. It would be kind of awesome if there was a solid wall up on the side of them with the door I suppose that could work LOL
One time I was on the bus going to my high school the bus was already late and the driver stops in front of Kwik Trip and gets out to most likely go to the restaurant but also comes back with food! Was 20 minutes late :/
Imagine having a whole motorcoach as the transit bus.. the bathroom goes wherever you do ;)
....but you still can't get that so-dee wooder and the cheeeeeeeese burgers and rolly grill dogs during the 3rd (sometimes near the end of 2nd shift) working hours :(
They should include some motorcoach buses as city transit that would be cool LOL then yes you could just use the bathroom as needed.
@@graciegjj they do. MTA does it, laketran does it, bcrta does it, even croswell does it for the ark and uc buses.. although those usually don't have bathrooms unfortunately
@@adventureoflinkmk2 just the last one you mentioned doesn't have bathrooms on it or all of them? But yeah I've lived in some cities where I see motor coach style buses but they're usually just a few and they connect you to another city that's across the bridge or whatever.. they are nothing I've ever needed to use though. Ones that travel on inner city routes would be cool.

Bathroom breaks are that important! When you gotta go, you gotta go!
Most terminals have restrooms where drivers can take a break, but whether or not there's a washroom with a pooper in it is the real question. I don't normally need a rest at the end of line, but sometimes I wanna leave my bus for a bit.
Honestly it depends on the city. Lots of routes terminate in neighborhoods where there is no break room. The bus becomes the break room.
What if you're in route and have people on the bus but need to use the restroom?
I’ve just said ‘I apologize for the delay but I’ll be running in for a quick restroom stop’ and never had any issues on my routes.

I worked for 12 years as a bus in Israel and a lot of times we(the bus drivers) used to use the trees&bushes as a restroom sometimes we used to pee on the wheeles of the bus that's one of the reasons there arent many female bus drivers in Israel
Note to self, stay away from Israeli transit bus wheels, and note the smell of a restroom.
Yeah definitely harder for females they can't always pop a squat.

Hey I’m subscribed and from ots sometimes bus agency’s don’t clean the vandalism on bus and people are mad also do you find vandalism on bus.

But aren't you guys closed in completely behind the door so there's privacy... Although there's big windows in front of you so I don't know and I don't know what policy is but I suppose you could use a bottle or whatever and discard of it later. It really makes you think how sometimes we take things for granted I'm so thankful that I work a job that I have access to a bathroom anytime I need it... Sometimes I think of doing a different career something in transit but I'm not willing to give this up... Now Uber and Lyft drivers it's no problem cuz you can just stop when you need to and go to the restroom you're dealing with one person at a time you can take breaks as you need but then again the money is not as good or the benefits.
Off-topic what shoe or boot do you recommend for bus driver Job?
Depends on what the company requires. If the shoes have to be shined..good work boots or comfy dress shoes.. I personally wear black vans. Comfortable and I like how they look lol.
Please answer this question: why should I pay the fair and do what’s right when people with bad attitude or bums ride free?
If you can't beat them join them... But I assume you're all talk and you're still doing the right thing because the eyes in the sky are watching.. maybe. You still go to work everyday and pay your taxes so that somebody else doesn't have to work... Thank you. But when you enjoy your life you almost never care what someone else is doing.
In my empty water bottle
I thought that I commented on this video regarding this topic. Now during the week, the route that I operate, believe it or not, there are many opportunities to use the restroom. On either end of the line, there are restrooms for us Operators to use. On one end, is a big shopping center, which has restrooms inside the businesses that the Operators are allowed to use. On the other end, is the downtown transit center, which has the bus operator restrooms. There is another transit center that my route stops at, which is a Northwest (tucson) transit center, which also has the bus operators restrooms. As i mentioned earlier, along the route, there are gas stations that have restrooms that we are allowed to use.
I will do a small video to show you the different bathroom stops I do make...

Does your bus have a GPS or do you memorize your different routes?!
We have gps and the stops are announced automatically but we don’t get route instructions via gps. We have route sheets and eventually we memorize the routes. That’s just in Sacramento though…other places may do things differently.

Very fascinated with buses and I do notice some buses in different cities have a screen to let the driver know if they are ahead or behind schedule for the route. Does Sacramento have the same thing?

They only have those on long distance motor coaches usually. That would be a disaster on a public transit bus!

Right! Would be nice but then you have to question whether to have it open to the public or just for the operator.... Cuz then you might have to wait still who knows it could be a disaster. Some good regular people use the bus but also a lot of weirdos.
The other option is in your pants if you can't find it sadly...

Kink or a perk 😅 but no for real I'm sure some do.... But I don't think one would really want to it's better to have a restroom to use. At least with truckers since they have privacy they can go in a bottle or whatever again not ideal but at least they have more options.
