I typically include one ranged unit in my warband just to prevent the scenario where all my units are wiped and I have just a hero on the battlefield. I find longbows work very well for that purpose. You should always be using them at maximum range and babysitting them, but if you do that and plan strategically on the map, they’re nearly unkillable and can eliminate enemy ranged which is a real service to your allies. Certain maps have great spots where they can arc a shot over terrain that makes them essentially invulnerable to return fire or trees.
I take these units everytime. I usually take them out and aim for nothing but enemy archers from range. It helps your team alot when you're taking out 80+ opposing archers without them reaching you're archers. Nice video Evo
as a longbow player, i find these units awesome I can sit at the backlines and really melt enemy units and if i take explosive arrow and time it well even eviscerate shield walls and their playstyle is perfect for me it lets me sit at extremely long ranges and line up headshots and destroy both enemy heroes and units with ease i often reach upwards of 200 kills on good games with these guys, very fun.
Longbowmans is my favs ranged troop. they are so good as long no enemy reach it or flank it. They have Shieldbreaker that still good vs shielded but better with unshielded like pikemens or others ranged unit. Really good against crowd especially when do volley arrow. Also each arrow deal around 1k until 2k! can 1 shot lower tier units. only the downside is it has limited men and slow rate of fire.
@Alan Du it's good but i know it's not the best. Even in some circumstances any units can be fked up in a sec. Longbowmen is good for their range and that's why i liked it. Even the accuracy is sometimes weird but when facing crowds even it shielded units, it still giving a decent damage. since it has shieldbreaker, That means you can help frontliner to break enemy's formation.
Back when you were a full armour poleaxe main, you had a philosophy of staying alive to control your units and let them do most of the work. That's exactly what you did throughout most of this battle, but you were wondering about your usefulness. As has been pointed out, you could have pressed 2 and dived into the fray with your glaive more often than you did, but there was no need. I believe getting that maul in S2 corrupted your thinking! After 1300hrs playing the game, Namkhans and Vassal Longbowmen are the only archer units I still have, and I nearly always have one or the other in my warband builds. You're dead right about the merits of each. In a win like the one you just had, I wouldn't feel bad about 'low participation' or lack of an S.
It's a interesting and good point, maybe the Maul has changed my point of view I certainly find I tend to generally play quite aggressivly so it doesn't really lend itself to playing range units like the longbows so much, maybe making use of the 2 key to cover myself is a good balance between the two
I miss playing this game but everytime I watch these videos I'm reminded of the love that I had with the game and the issues I had with it aswell. The maul throwing me into spikes or off the map, the cavalry running everything over, the clunky combat.. its a love hate relationship
I feel like part of the issue here, was you weren't using one of the Longbows best features: Cover commander. Slap them into that savespot, put faith in the fortebraccios who'd dedicated themselves to defending you and those namkhans, and go down to help on point. The longbows would be defending your back and you could go ham, knowing nothing but a hero or shield unit could really come near you without making a mistake.
I think you’re right in this situation, if he kept to the treb safe spot on the left of the wall he would’ve been fine in this particular case as there was only ever one treb that came close and 0 return fire. It’s still a risk though as you give up control of your units position and you’ll never have good enough situational awareness to save them if something goes wrong.
That's a fair point, I guess I felt like I'd had to any games where I leave them where I thought they were safe only to find them die, but that's properly more down to bad positioning. It's all made worse by the fact I'm not really much of an archer player, now in not recording I'll likly just go back to melee units :)
No word about their second skill, which is also quite unique in that they target enemies close to your hero? Have you ever tried that? Sounds useful for a Melee class.
ALso a good question is yshould you stick to a melee class when using this unit as a primary. Pro: - you can defend against heros and melee units - you can get stuck in the fight with you melee units if your longbowmen die Contra: - if you had a bow yourself you could participate in the damage dealt (remember that these pros and cons are weighted on your personal prefence, thus how many pros vs. cons there are does not nessesarily determine the outcome)
I probably shouldn't be telling anyone this... but Vassal Longbowmen are the best archer in the game. Why? When you use their Overwatch ability it puts up a range circle (as you noticed), but what you don't know... that is NOT the Vassal Longbowman's maximum range... not even close to it. Vassal Longbowmen can fire at nearly any range - indeed out to the maximum travel distance of arrows themselves (where the arrows de-spawn mid flight). Next time you use them, ignore the range indicator and tell them to Overwatch into an area beyond the highlighted white circle. You can also control their direct fire or indirect fire using the range indicator. If you tell them to fire outside of their range indicator they ALWAYS lob their arrows up, allowing you to fire OVER WALLS ENTIRELY to hit units in courtyards, or to keep them away from the edge of walls (thus making them immune to counter fire and safer from trebs). Finally, you don't have to pick up the accuracy in the top tree (thus saving them 10% decreased attack speed) - and when you pick up the 25% attack speed increase from the unit tree it more than makes up any DPS difference between them and Namkan Archers. (Rare Archery Doctrine gives 10% accuracy without an attack speed penalty as well).
Vassal Longbows, Incendiary Archers, and Imperial Archers are my go-to ranged units. I nearly always make sure to have one of those three in my warband.
GG in the duel In the season 5 event today, I decided to clip it along with a few others that i could have saved from it, since some of them isnt saving for some reason. Glad to see you around some more, we need to duel again sometime soon
A thought just occurred to me about the upcoming (at some point) Golden Era unit that is after Longbowmen on the Unit Tree. What if it's another Longbow unit, that has the range of Vassal Longbowmen, but also has an alternate ammo option? If they go that route, I think the most appropriate option would be Bodkins/Armor-Piercing arrows like Imperial Archers have in this game.
I agree too, but a friend of mine playing Maul he is really happy using Kriegstat guns in the background and killing enemies at the same time himself, especially in def

Hi, i need help please : What happen of range stats if i use vassal and Bowstring Doctrine V in conqueror's blade versus range of falconneti gunner ? If both are max range ? Who will have the best range ? From stats range ? Please
I don't mind if there are 2-3 heroes who stay back micromanaging their archer And move when there's no one to shoot, you actually do much damage, and it's very useful More than 4 heroes then it's pretty harsh for the flag defense team. But it would be more effective if you're using a ranged weapon too, to maximize the damage output There're worse people who just left their longbowman in the supply depot Hoping to get an easy kill, but most of the time they just idling
yeah, up to 4 people doing this is perfectly fine, but trust me when i say that i have seen around 25 archer units in a single team, or basically 11 people running mostly archers. imagine how that turned out lol
Vassal Longbow needs a lot of archer unit from the enemy team to contribute their worth. Which is out of your control. I will always recommend prefecture archer (hybrid line) or namkhans (with arrow rain doctrine, frontier) more than the T4s because I almost always choose arquebusiers at this leadership range. But I do want to have a test of whether Imperials are better than arquebusiers though.
What unit have the high range in level max in all season ? I love range soldiers ! I want the best range, only one. I want the range from stats range ! Help please
I feel you are thinking about the usefulness of the longbows all wrong. Every hit on an advancing unit is less health that the mele unit down on the point has to remove. 2 of the same units at 8k health are going to basically trade pretty evenly excluding better commanding. 2 same units going at each other one at 8k and one at 4k and still being peppered by ranged fire are not boing to have the same result. Chances are the higher health unit is going to wipe the lower health enemy and still be able to fight another unit or get more models back to the supply to heal up.
love them on certain maps ... the ultimate long range-antirange ;) at arround 6.30 min .... you put youre archer (before treb) together with that other archers on wall ... you can alsochoose to put youre archers out of treb reach if you go up the stairs right in front of the side gate ;) (also closer to supply there and youre able to close gate if you need to retreat if people come up ladder) from there you can easily hit the supply down (capped fast by enemy anyway) as well as shooting the stairs they come up nxt to B ;) ... longbows are worth it if used correctly .. they still have a very high damage output and they need less micromanagement then other archers, so you can do more youreself as hero... ow and this map is very nice for imp javis ;) i just stick to gate-supply andrain down javis everywhere
Imo, a player has been worth it around 100 unit kills, for a melee hero to be worth it with ranged units id say situational. If the player goes help on point when needed id say yes, but some players stay up all the time, even when it loses them the game.
Yeah it's a hard balance to get, generally now the recording is done for the archers i think I'll go back melee, have enjoyed them but I just prefer playing melee :)
I love them, they seem to be the only archer that behaves like i would assume an archer unit should. I wish they'd implement a small version of overwatch on the Attack Area ability. The only time i really want them as my unit is when the enemy has archers and are shooting my team's melee troops their anti archer abilities are just so good it saves your team quite the headache. A tip if you will is that when you are on highground you do a bit more damage and you can actually aim at targets outside of the blue circle, the arrow flight time will be long but they won't fire back at least. Also what do you think of the conq city map, i absolutely hate it.
Yeah I know what you mean with the behave like an archer should and I agree, makes for brilliant anti range unit! I found the conq city map worked well for these long bows so playing it hasn't been to bad as of yet, I think trying to grind a different unit type would have been painful!
I am yet to unlock these, on the list. But I do like the idea of them, however do have the same issue of being melee so hanging around my archers isn't the greatest. I do however like the idea of how they can focus enemies around you while you're out fighting. But it's kind of a trap in a way because it sounds good sure, but.. It leaves them open to being wiped out.. Also, not sure how much you have noticed this, but Archers at least on my end have A LOT of issues shooting off walls due to the ledge. I mean they can clearly see over it, but oh no can't shoot sir, there is a waist high wall in the way which is literally designed for Archers to shoot through & have some form of protection, we can't shoot through that.. Also, been holding onto a Archer Doc which increases range by 5m, it's not a lot so haven't decided if it's really worth putting it on these guys considering their range anyway. Also also, really wish they would add this map to the rotation more. Never played on the map, although I guess might now that we can take it in the open world but doubt it. Looks pretty good though & looks like a heap of work went into making the map so kind of a waste not to get used. I've only been on one map that is about as big as this one, don't know what it's called, but is the one with the little fort out front that has a bridge to the main fort.
Unknown, isn't in the sea version either. I honestly cannot imagine how they could possibly improve on the longbow itself, it was the quintessential ranged weapon in the middle age. My guess is they will do a similar upgrade to the arquebusier and give them an armor improvement (most likely a Brigadine) and a sword. The only other improvement I can possibly think of is to give them the ability to also shoot fire arrows which would make sense from a tech tree standpoint.
i just realized thaqt i have a doctrin which gives me 100 points more dmg to range and 100 points less dmg taken from range units that seems to be the best perk for the Longbows... maybe i get them later eddit: i just relized this doctrin is just for cav and Sword infantry.... for what unit should i use this purple doctrin?
probably something like those wolves from new season, if they can be put on them of course, other than that probably some smaller unit u can throw into the archers, because any high tier units kill them anyway without taking much damage so the doctrine isnt that useful and last thing is if u want to use that 100 damage less thing then u can put them on any unit, but then maybe just piercing defence is better, or u can put both if u have doctrine space, in that case put them on any unit you use!
@@otrof6203 jeah i thought about my green horses ironcaps because they get soo much dmg from archers thats crazy but i need to put the green health away then
Game looks great for F2P, watched a couple of your vids (which I have enjoyed!) and I'm tempted to try it. BUT previous experiences with Russian F2P games kinda puts me off as they are usually designed to hook you then smack you with a soul destroying grind to try and force you into getting premium services which end up costing you way more than a triple A title after just a year of play. TLDR: can I realistically play this game long-term without a premium account and still progress at a reasonable rate without sinking 1000s of hours like yourself? Also, are the micro transactions still cosmetic only or am I going up against players who have wallet warriors at their disposal? Sorry for the long comment, and thankyou in advance for any replies! Much love.
There is a decent grind yes, so i'd say sort of 50/50 on that front, don't really need a premium account though and yes microtransaction are still really only cosmetic. In short i'd say yes there are elements of what you fear but compared to many f2p games this isn't to bad
@@EvoLozGaming Thank you very much for the quick response, I have noticed you take alot of time to reply to your viewers which is a rare and awesome thing to see! You earned my sub and if you have an affiliate link or something for the game that I can use to help you out then I'd be more than happy to do that! Cheers.
Yeah exactly the same which is why I mentioned it in the video, feel like I should be done in the fighting! But now the video is sorted I can return to my normal melee units :-D
Vasals are to be left alone. You put them in a spot where they arc their shots and you go do your hero business with cover commander button. Its the only way vasals can get you the unit kills and damage potential of prefectures and namkhans which realy need babysitting.
this my fav range unit too , i have increase range doctrine is it good to use it with this archer, about the play style i see many people prefer to play range unit (in my Asia pacific server) and i can't blame them the game design about repair cost of archer unit is quite cheap than melee and the fact that they didn't die much compare to melee unit. the Dev should change something about unit kit damage.
I think that playing all archers as a melee hero is very boring. You don't contribute versus heroes majority od the time either. I think that it's only viable to use archers if you're a bow. But bow class is already not that great.
There is no utility gap for them. other units will do something they were supposed to better for less leadership or with better performace and will be less derpy. This unit starts to shoot at the closest enemy without line of sight while they were orderd to shoot at a position(that range is around 30) Arc of fire is fucked up (arrow arcs from longbows should be curved (like arrow rain from prefecture yet it is so flat that you cant hit wall with it) . There is literally few positions you can place them and enemy has to braindead to put their ranged there and go somewhere else becouse in 90% of cases that posistion is also trebable. And bringing them on the attack is even worse becouse you want enemy teams to sit with 10/15 archers and do nothing while you defend. while remaining 5 players die constantly becouse that 10 idiots decided to go ranged. The only moment this unit was ever good was when there were bearly any purple units and open world was 15vs15. There you could kill tons becouse you otranged anything and slowly bleed the enemy. Also longbow is a weapon that is supposed to shred heavy armour do they do it in this game? NO. This is and always was the weakest purple unit in the game, and is outperformed by most blue units and even some green.
Level 1066! Important year for us brits. I like what you said about feeling somewhat useless with ranged, even when racking up so much damage and so many kills, I agree. I feel much more integral when I'm standing on a flag with a sword unit and getting 20 kills, than if I were to sit back with archers and get 10 times that

Prefecture archer's double shot also tracks I believe
do you mean the rain arrow?
worth getting in season 7?
Hmmmm, i'd be tempted to say probobly not
what was the button that lets archers target a specific area, I kinda forgot.

what will be the tier 5 archers?
Hopefully one day but as of yet unknown
Unknown, isn't in the sea version either. I honestly cannot imagine how they could possibly improve on the longbow itself, it was the quintessential ranged weapon in the middle age. My guess is they will do a similar upgrade to the arquebusier and give them an armor improvement (most likely a Brigadine) and a sword. The only other improvement I can possibly think of is to give them the ability to also shoot fire arrows which would make sense from a tech tree standpoint.
i just realized thaqt i have a doctrin which gives me 100 points more dmg to range and 100 points less dmg taken from range units that seems to be the best perk for the Longbows... maybe i get them later
eddit: i just relized this doctrin is just for cav and Sword infantry.... for what unit should i use this purple doctrin?
probably something like those wolves from new season, if they can be put on them of course, other than that probably some smaller unit u can throw into the archers, because any high tier units kill them anyway without taking much damage so the doctrine isnt that useful
and last thing is if u want to use that 100 damage less thing then u can put them on any unit, but then maybe just piercing defence is better, or u can put both if u have doctrine space, in that case put them on any unit you use!
@@otrof6203 jeah i thought about my green horses ironcaps because they get soo much dmg from archers thats crazy but i need to put the green health away then
@@leckteck5694 tough choice, maybe on some blue unit that u use then
Do you know a way to lower ping in conquerers blade?
Not sure of anyways to specifically lower ping, i'm normally around 50 to 80
Ok
Which is the best archer unit
Namkhan
I got an level 12 men at arms unit. Can I still promote them to the new season unit?
Yeah
Could you do a vid about prefecture vs vanguard?
perfecture. dont even think.
@@kotsosmpalitsos1615 what about now?
I'm gonna give the game a bash n see if it pulls me in.
Don't get me wrong, if I enjoy it then I'll probably get a couple months premium to support the dev team as I do with any game I play but I just don't need another WoT or War Thunder grind in my life right now!
You earned my sub and if you have an affiliate link or something for the game that I can use to help you out then I'd be more than happy to do that!
Cheers.
I don’t know, I’m always either a musket or melee unit user, and whenever I use an archer unit I get kind of guilty
Yeah exactly the same which is why I mentioned it in the video, feel like I should be done in the fighting! But now the video is sorted I can return to my normal melee units :-D
Longbows do more dmg in near if u dont choose the range skilltree
Vasals are to be left alone.
You put them in a spot where they arc their shots and you go do your hero business with cover commander button.
Its the only way vasals can get you the unit kills and damage potential of prefectures and namkhans which realy need babysitting.
Sucks that my guild banned them from tw but given the current cav metta, i cant really complain.
love how you used advert footage
this my fav range unit too , i have increase range doctrine is it good to use it with this archer, about the play style i see many people prefer to play range unit (in my Asia pacific server) and i can't blame them the game design about repair cost of archer unit is quite cheap than melee and the fact that they didn't die much compare to melee unit. the Dev should change something about unit kit damage.
Good point about the kit damage! We dont get the extra range doctrine on our servers so I've been running the extra accuracy :)
I think longbow get a bonus if enemies are close enough.
What to damage?
@@EvoLozGaming I think so, but maybe it was Penetration...
For anyone watching this video right now, never bring Vassal Longbows into a siege please.. they're useless right now.
I think that playing all archers as a melee hero is very boring. You don't contribute versus heroes majority od the time either. I think that it's only viable to use archers if you're a bow. But bow class is already not that great.
I do largely agree which Is why i'm almost always melee units but was interesting to try out the longbows for the video for a change
The olso outrange falconeti
Only 2 archer worth using. Nahm Kahns, and Imperial Archers. anything else does no damage to armor.
Vassals are better than imperials lol
Vessels hit pretty hard to most armored units due to their high ap value but they dont have the greatest rate of fire
@@EvoLozGaming Honestly though Imps have higher thoretical dps, the overwatch mechanic often lets my longbowmen do more damage due to the tracking.
lev 1066.......lmao
I beg you make a video telling people to not play longbows they are useless for the amount of leadership they cost.
They can be useful in some circumstances they are a great anti range unit. Perhaps people often bring them and just get killed very quickly though
Again in war nothing is useless only poor leadership. If you don't play them right it's your own fault.
