Def 1 of the best songs, personally, for me. The whole album is crazy good. And then you consider the age at which Fiona wrote it, & it just blows my mind. So talented. (As a side note, I just can’t picture Kanye listening to it & “getting” it. Idk.....)
Fiona is my favorite singer/songwriter of all time, but besides liking Tidal a lot I get pissed why the media treats it like her best and almost only album when The Idler Wheel and When the P... are far superior albums!
It was 1996. I was a grunge young man living in the South. Names like Miles, Coltrane, Holiday and Simone were unknown names. Then somewhere out of the firmament I heard Shadowboxer on MTV stuck somewhere between Everclear and another replay of One Sweet Day. Shadowboxer sounded like it belonged to another time and place. One of Night Clubs and Noirs. It was at that moment the lightning hit me. The album touched me like very few ever have. It was from there I discovered the rest of those names and many, many more. Thanks Fiona. Just wish you made music at a quicker pace.
I love Tidal but I think 'When The Pawn' is a far greater album. 'The Idler Wheel' is probably her masterpiece; it displays her maturity as a writer and singer. She's just brilliant . I respect her artistic integrity.
She matured in the best way one artist can each album. The Idler Wheel, lyrics, voice, realness, her music is timeless and that started with Tidal(Carrion is my favorite). Can’t wait for new projects from her
This woman saves my life all the time. I’m so thankful for Fiona Apple. She just kept getting better musically. The Idler Wheel is my favorite album of all time. It’s absolute perfection. My god, I hope this is a foreshadow to a release. It’s fucking time already!
Love Fiona! First time I discovered her I stayed up all night listening to her songs even though I had school the next day. I heard she has new music on the way!
I first heard " Never is a Promise" on San Francisco's Alice@ 97.3 and just on that song I went out and bought the album. Such a masterpiece, great songs, what more can I say. But sadly Fiona in an interview said she no longer plays "Never" live anymore because she doesn't know how to play it!
"Though it wasn't particularly representative of Apple's songwriting..." I thought Criminal's lyrics were actually really good. Seemed to have more depth compared to other mainstream songs.
Seriously..... Tidal pales in front of When the pawn..., the gods were together for that album. Rich Coasty, mixing and engineering and his then husband Jon Brion producing. Please do yourself a favor and listen to her sophomore album.
Jon Brion has never had a husband. What are you talking about? The only known thing about his private life is that he was in a relationship with Mary Lynn Rajskub for several years.
I hate that “Criminal” is like, her biggest song & when ppl think of Fiona they think of “Criminal.” It’s not a bad song, but really, c’mon, she has waaaaay better ones
there's still good music in the underground but you're right - most artists achieving main-stream success shouldn't even be called artists - they are not even in the same league as someone like Fiona Apple. This label Underflow Records has been putting mixes online with a good assortment of newer tunes if you want some fresh music! soundcloud.com/underflowrecords
Liner Notes: To Mega Therion The Shape of Jazz (and Punk) to come Killing Technology Souls at Zero Alice in Chain's Self Titled/Dirt Altars of Madness or Covenant Reign in Blood Seven Churches
This album is criminally underrated.
Christopher Edmiston I see what you did there
and it needs to be redeemed! :)
Just wait for TikTok to get to it
Is it?
@@Bom.3dthey did...😭
"Sleep to dream" was written when she was only 14?!?!?!!?!?! omg
"Shadowboxer" came from a 18-year-old. She's like a prodigy.
How? Like literally how??? It sounds like it was written by 40 year old her
A genius, i wish she didn't have such a hard time with fame
I'm so glad she did. Her "bullshit" speech is one of the best pop culture moments of the 90s.
i agree and it's sucks that she didn't handle fame very well. i think she just wanted to make good music. i love her music.
Matthew James She has never had a hard time with fame... she just doesn’t care.
"Never Is a Promise" is a severally underrated song in F.A.'s catalog.
It's my favorite song off of "Tidal!!"

severally...

aaaughh agreed! those are her best imo
When the pawn is my favorite album of all time. It really took me years to decide this. I'm more into hip hop but fiona apple is the best of the best.

same, on all fronts.
I love Tidal but I think 'When The Pawn' is a far greater album. 'The Idler Wheel' is probably her masterpiece; it displays her maturity as a writer and singer. She's just brilliant . I respect her artistic integrity.

First Taste is a fucking great song.
Perfect album, unreal artist. The First Taste, Slow Like Honey etc. Absolutely brilliant
One of my top 10 albums in life
A fantastic album, though The Idler Wheel is her masterpiece and one of the best albums of all time (top 5 of the decade)
I agree. The Idler Wheel has her finest songwriting to date.
The idler wheel and tidal are her best. Extraordinary machine is slightly better than FTBC. And I haven’t listened to WTP
Thank you for this. Fiona apple is a lyrical genius and i love the sould she puts into her music also the way she plays piano
Love Fiona! First time I discovered her I stayed up all night listening to her songs even though I had school the next day. I heard she has new music on the way!
bananacomplex wow u look just like her
This is one of my all time favourite albums. It's incredible that a teenager can write this kind of stuff. "Never Is A Promise" is breathtaking.
One of the best musician, and songwriter of all time
I first heard of Fiona when I was at the fragile age of 15 during the her Extraordinary Machine era and I was floored and transformed to say the least
Same. I remember watching her live performance of 'Parting Gift' on Yahoo! Music of all places and becoming obsessed.
Who’s here after listening to the new Fiona album!
25 years of tidal ♥
Lol that’s why I’m here, I’ve listened to a few tracks but never the full album. Planning on listening today.
One of my favorite albums of all time
A great album and an amazing debut, every other album that followed is a masterpiece, she's such an incredible Singer/songwriter

The ethereal and brilliant Fiona Apple
Masterpiece. Honestly still find it hard to believe she was a teenager when she wrote these songs
not a lot of people stan her..... and im perfectly ok with that
I first heard " Never is a Promise" on San Francisco's Alice@ 97.3 and just on that song I went out and bought the album. Such a masterpiece, great songs, what more can I say. But sadly Fiona in an interview said she no longer plays "Never" live anymore because she doesn't know how to play it!

wait... jon brion is gay?
Jon Brion has never had a husband. What are you talking about? The only known thing about his private life is that he was in a relationship with Mary Lynn Rajskub for several years.
When the pawn... is my favorite Fiona's album too. I Know has the most beautiful lyrics I've ever seen.
This album is my life
virgo legend, her energy just reads earth sign
Fiona Apple por lejos una de las artistas mas infravaloradas.
Great album, but I think her next album was much better.
Rudie Obias exactly, and I also think that Idler Wheel is her masterpiece

One of my favourite albums! It was really the album that got me out of my Spice Girls pop phase and opened me up to so much alternative music.
I love how you guys completely changed your tune on this album... Misogyny queens at pitchfork
A modern classic. In my top 50 of all time. And Fiona only got better w/ each album
The video for criminal was the hottest thing I’d ever seen at age 9-10. Not to mention a pretty good song.
I hate that “Criminal” is like, her biggest song & when ppl think of Fiona they think of “Criminal.” It’s not a bad song, but really, c’mon, she has waaaaay better ones
please do tori amos little earthquake or boys for pele
Her music is not my thing, but I'll always have massive respect for her!
Dear World, please make more difficult and divisive artists. The get-along to get-along ones are making me numb.
Sorry the next year Britney came out and Disney took over pop culture...only controversy for marketing purposes is allowed

who ever writes these things should take a writing class, laughably stiff
Ugh. This narrator's voice. Please have people with less repulsive voices narrate these pieces.
Classic
