This is indeed one of my favorite songs of Sabaton and I'm happy you guys ended the Last Stand with that number. It's indeed one of the more upbeat songs. The story is just amazing. Where an SS, American GI, and German Wehrmacht fought all together to stop the SS from killing the French prisoners. It was indeed the Strangest Battle of World War Two. But the story should be told.
The book relating this event by Stephen Harding is quite a good read as well. Honestly, I knew how the events would play out, I knew how this would end, and yet I was reading this like this was the first time I was hearing about the story.
The battle of castle Itter is my favourite story about WW2. When I and my girlfriend was on a road trip a couple of years ago we stayed a few days in Austria. I had a book with me called "The last battle" by Stephen Harding which covers the whole event and it's great. And when I checked on google where in austria it was I found out it wasn't far from where we stayed so I convinced my girl we check it out. And damn it was cool but it was a bit weird. First it's a private property and the owner wasn't home so sadly I couldn't go inside. And for some reason there's no indication from the village that the battle even happened. No info from tourist flyers or nothing. But I didn't cry. It was awesome standing outside the gate where Jenny once defended it and looking around the steep cliff and the surrounding forest where the SS tried to overrun the castle. I'm really happy I I've been there and i think more people should. And speaking about the song I was really happy that Sabaton made a song about the story. The song is one of my favourites and VERY underrated, just as the battle it portray. So please rethink this statistic stuff when it comes to that song at least. It deserves to blast through a stadium as hard as the castle and soldiers stood against the SS.
There really ought to be a movie about this, but it's probably one of those things that they'd have to tone down to make it believable. I mean, only one of the "good guys" gets killed after having survived six years of war in Europe, including Stalingrad, Normandy and Bastogne, then gets killed defending French VIPs defending a medieval Austrian Castle alongside an American football player? No way anyone would believe that! And fighting Nazis as the badguys has been so overdone in Hollywood, anyway. /Sarcasm
I think the best way would be to do it as close as possible to the historic event, with all the outlandish, over the top elements. And then at the very end end with an "actually, this is 100% what happened and this is where those guys that survived ended up" XD
I found it quite easy to pictures some of the scenes actually. If I'm honest, I'd be more interested in seeing that story on screen if it was made by a smaller, independent studio, why not a European production, rather than the big magnates of Hollywood (who are likely to water it down and make it PG to make as much money as possible out of it)
Great episode and what a great story (and song) to go with it! It's really inspiring too, in the same way the 'No Bullets Fly' incident was; people like Gangl and Schrader putting aside their ideology and orders to instead do what's right. I have to agree with Indy: why hasn't this been made into a movie? The image of 67-year-old Paul Reynaud firing a machine gun at Nazis in a medieval castle is now stuck in my head and it's glorious.
I'm almost certain it has and I've seen it, it was playing on a broadcast channel and I caught it half way in. I for the life of me can't remember what it was called. Ever since I heard this song I've been trying to think of it.
I just want to say thank you Sabaton for being there during my high school years. It was the last battle that got me an A+ in my history through film class. As the final project was to write our own idea for a history movie. I was the odd one out who did the last battle and your song was used for the end. It was you all who gave me an idea for a really interesting movie. Which I doubt will ever be resurfaced.
Like most Sabaton songs, this one moves me to tears every time I really think about it. I think about Gangl and how much he saw, and how it left him guilty and disillusioned. To be killed in action as he was, trying to rescue some prisoners in an old castle, literally running to their aid, is the ultimate story of redemption. Knowing that he made the decision to help these prisoners in the first place is beautiful, but his final sacrifice really makes me break out in goosebumps. Knowing that he was needed, that he was a friend, that he was helping, that he could atone and finally do the right thing -- I hope that that's what his final moments were like. I hope that he died peacefully, knowing that he'd made all the difference. Rest in peace, Josef "Sepp" Gangl. May your eternal rest be joyous and peaceful.
This is one of my favorite songs from sabaton. I think i first heard about the story on NPR when they talked about the book 'The Last Battle' and i was so excited when i saw a song about it. The story is so inspiring and so human also.
I could see that movie now "The Battle of Castle Itter" Unlikely allies, former foes, and rebels seek to hold a castle deep in Austria as the tattered, but rezalute WAFFEN SS close in.
We need these heroes in our history books. Shout their names in the schools and universities. War is hell, but it's people like these that bring light in dark times.
Make it the credits theme. Keep the overall tone of the movie serious to make the surreal parts stand out (like the prisoner pole vaulting over the walls or Gangl being killed) and then play this during the "This is where they ended up" prelude to the credits.
I absolutely love you guys. Had the privilege of going to your concert in Seattle 2019 and exposing two of my best friends to their 1st live concerts ever! You and Hammerfall left us hot, sweaty, and without any voices left by the end of the night. Keep up the good work and LONG LIVE SABATON!!!

12:43 We always knew Joakim loved Tanks, but perhaps it was Jenny in his heart all along. Guess we could say he was "besotten with Jenny." I can't believe this song isn't more popular. It's one of my absolute FAVORITES and I've listened to it so many times I've lost count. It's especially great for when I'm studying, having this on a loop is super motivating. The Last Battle being one of the strangest in history has honestly always made me feel a huge mix of emotions and I love this song because it's basically perfect.
Such a badass story! I always liked the song and now it's even better! These episodes are always giving me a newfound enjoyment for the songs they are talking about or making me fall in love with ones I had overlooked before 🥰🤘
I saw something about it and was just curious so I go to type it in and the app shuts down and makes my TV restart. It wasn't my wi-fi either so it was strange to say the least. Where can I find it outside YT?
The concept of two opposing sides coming together to fight a common enemy and parting as friends has always spoken to me, and always will. And that is why "The Last Battle" instantly became one of my top favorites, and not just among Sabaton's songs. Rest in Power, Major Joseph "Sepp" Gangl " _Omnia quod creata, in harmonia unita._ "
It’s a great story and a great song. One I wouldn’t mind seeing and hearing live myself. This story accurately describes how crazy things can get in a war. And it definitely deserves a movie. Thanks guys.
Wow.. I became interested in WWII when I was a teenager in the 70s. I'm 62 now.. and I thought I'd read everything there is to know about it... and watched every documentary about the war. I stumbled on to this video today.. and I'm stunned. I had never heard about this. Like a lot of people have mentioned, this should be made into a movie. It has all the elements needed. You wouldn't even need to dramatize it, as often happens with movies based on real-life events. The story is so wild, it sounds like a plot that Quentin Tarantino would have written. Thanks for posting this!
My wife is a teacher (of reading), and we both went to high school in the 80s, and we both like history. and she had not been aware of Sabaton. I saw Bismarck (the video) when it was new, and showed it to her, and away she went. She found this channel, and loves all the music, and we've seen Sabaton live twice in the past year as well, in the US. Just keep doing what you do best!
This story (one of my favorites as an amateur student of All things WWII) is proof to all the people I have to educate in the following fact: Most Germans in Nazi Germany weren't Nazis. They did what they were told to keep from getting killed by the Gestapo, or were merely fighting for the Father Land. All of the combatants should have received the highest medals of their day from their respective governments
IM SOOOOOOO HAPPY I absolutely love SABATON and I have literally been waiting for this specific video for months. You guy's music have helped me so much in terrible times and I cant wait to hear what else the GREATEST METAL BAND IN THE WHOLE WORLD is going to release to us.
This is one of my favorites from The Last Stand, such a great heroic and surprising tale in one of the darkest moments in human history. I read somewhere that there's a movie in production, don't know how far it is or how the progress is but I hope it comes out.
You got to ask yourself this, what exactly was the conversations between the US troops and the German Wehrmacht? Not only had they been fighting each others, but this was the only time they would talk to each others that wasn't where one of them were a POW. It most have been bisarr for both sides to get used to the guy you been fighting would be the same guy who now would make sure you survived.
Idk man I reckon the conversation was quite light and casual, they weren't aliens to eachother and many Germans spoke broken English even back then, there isn't much difference between soldiers
@@thehypest6118 Oh ya, i don't think they chatted a lot like in some other cases, it's still that upcoming doom of the SS attack which would 100% effect their nerves, but the few that could break the nerves and talked to each others, i would love to know what was said. What casual stuff did they just talk about. Was there anyone who ever went deeper and trusted some more personal deals with the former enemy. From the stories we know of, it's clear that most soldiers weren't hating each others on the Western Front. They could have casual talks with each others when timed allowed it.
This is one of, if not my favorite song from Sabaton. I think the story is awesome, and that intro gets me pumped up every time. I really wish they would play it at shows.

That's happened more the one time in the WW2. In the Second Battle of the Alps (1945) Charles de Gaulle decided deliberately to invade the North of Italy for conquest. When the Italians saw the French Army occupy the territory, partisans, members of the RSI (Italians soldiers still loyal to Mussolini) and some german troops, joined together to protect the Alps. They fought in fortification and won despite they were outnumbered. They surrounded only when the american troops arrived, becouse they ordered the french army to stop. The President of USA himself thretened De Gaulle to stop the invasion with the stop of the supply.
I dont comment on your videos but I've been waiting for this episode since the channel start, this is by far my favorite song. So many good drunken memories to this jam!

If they can't manage to do a live action version, how about a stop-motion lego version like the Future of Warfare video from the 15th?
MORE LEGOS!!!!!
YES!!

can't wait to see videos of Indy playing "Swedish Pagans" on a lounge piano
Gonna be akward 😂
Battle of Castle Itter was so interesting, these types of stories are so cool to here about
I am confident you have seen it already buy Mark Felton made an excellent video on this
@Nik Turk yes I did!
That was an interesting story, it's a shame the village or the castle don't have more stuff available for tourists. Thanks for the support!
Because its treated like a generic ww2 battle
@@TheBigOne0305 Play up the camp and sheer bonkersness(?) of it all? I'm down.
And when the Resistance arrived RIGHT AFTER the German tank arrived
When history is so unbelievable at the time it's considered badly written fiction
Also, Hannibal pulled massive gamer moves
I found it quite easy to pictures some of the scenes actually. If I'm honest, I'd be more interested in seeing that story on screen if it was made by a smaller, independent studio, why not a European production, rather than the big magnates of Hollywood (who are likely to water it down and make it PG to make as much money as possible out of it)
We gotta admit...
We need a Last Stand Movie...
hugh hollite
Or a bf spin off series
Absolutely not
Great episode and what a great story (and song) to go with it!
67 years old! LMAO.
Biggest "Get off my lawn" moment in WW2.
Joakim's lover is a tank, that makes so much sense!
Sabaton: Let’s be honest we all love history and metal why not have both
Everyone loved that
Like most Sabaton songs, this one moves me to tears every time I really think about it.
"Does your lady friend watch this? "Joakim: I have made a terrible mistake.
Also........Play it live!
This is one of my favorite songs from sabaton. I think i first heard about the story on NPR when they talked about the book 'The Last Battle' and i was so excited when i saw a song about it. The story is so inspiring and so human also.
This story is general kinda feels underrated sometimes despite it's one of the most interesting.
I could see that movie now

We need these heroes in our history books. Shout their names in the schools and universities. War is hell, but it's people like these that bring light in dark times.
I swear. If I ever get to be a director. This is the FIRST film I will ever do. And you be god damn sure this song is gonna be in the movie somewhere
Make it the credits theme. Keep the overall tone of the movie serious to make the surreal parts stand out (like the prisoner pole vaulting over the walls or Gangl being killed) and then play this during the "This is where they ended up" prelude to the credits.
All my hopes and dreams are in your directors legacy/career

You can clearly hear Indy crack a smile while talking, he's enjoying that story so much.
I kinda understand why this hasn't been a movie.
"The different between fiction and non fiction is that fiction need to be absolutely believable."
Holy hell. When I wrote under the "Hearts of Iron" video about this song, I never expected a video on it. And here we are. I can die peacefully, thank you, guys!
With love from Russia
No problem, don't die anytime soon though! Your support is really appreciated.

I like how the discussion about lyrics evolved into Joakim f*ckin a tank
Also so sad this song is so underrated it’s one of my favourites on the last stand album

This is one of my favourite Sabbaton songs, so happy you guys went into the history of the song

About f*cking time guys.
The Second Battle of Fort Wagner and the Battle of the Crater from the American Civil War would both be *REALLY* cool topics for songs I think.
This is one of my favorite songs by Sabaton. I knew about the story years ago before ever listening to Sabaton. The story is so inspirational and shows how the human spirit can overcome overwhelming odds at times.
12:43 We always knew Joakim loved Tanks, but perhaps it was Jenny in his heart all along. Guess we could say he was "besotten with Jenny."
I can't believe this song isn't more popular.
These episodes are always giving me a newfound enjoyment for the songs they are talking about or making me fall in love with ones I had overlooked before 🥰🤘
I said it 2 albums ago and I'll say it again, Sabaton gets even better with every release!
I find it weird that this song never got that popular. This song was what got me into Sabaton in the first place.
It's one hell of an introduction 🤘
how could this song not be popular, its so good
OK...but I was searching for The Last Battle that starts with Europa.

I saw something about it and was just curious so I go to type it in and the app shuts down and makes my TV restart. It wasn't my wi-fi either so it was strange to say the least. Where can I find it outside YT?
My app shut off and restarted my TV when I searched it. How can I find it?
The concept of two opposing sides coming together to fight a common enemy and parting as friends has always spoken to me, and always will. And that is why "The Last Battle" instantly became one of my top favorites, and not just among Sabaton's songs.
Rest in Power, Major Joseph "Sepp" Gangl

It’s a great story and a great song. One I wouldn’t mind seeing and hearing live myself. This story accurately describes how crazy things can get in a war. And it definitely deserves a movie. Thanks guys.
Happy you enjoyed the story and hope you get to see us perform it live one day!!
WE NEED THIS SONG LIVE!!
I, like you, cannot understand how this story which has movie plot written all over it, has not had a single movie made about it. (11:04)
"This song never became very popular" WHAT? I thought it was crazy popular as soon as I heard it, it just sounds too perfect

I searched for Europa the last battle----- SH
My wife is a teacher (of reading), and we both went to high school in the 80s, and we both like history. and she had not been aware of Sabaton. I saw Bismarck (the video) when it was new, and showed it to her, and away she went. She found this channel, and loves all the music, and we've seen Sabaton live twice in the past year as well, in the US. Just keep doing what you do best!
That's an amazing story, thanks a lot for sharing it with us 😎
This story (one of my favorites as an amateur student of All things WWII) is proof to all the people I have to educate in the following fact: Most Germans in Nazi Germany weren't Nazis. They did what they were told to keep from getting killed by the Gestapo, or were merely fighting for the Father Land. All of the combatants should have received the highest medals of their day from their respective governments

Doubt many of the Germans spoke English or many Americans spoke German
@@lovablesnowman some probably would
Idk man I reckon the conversation was quite light and casual, they weren't aliens to eachother and many Germans spoke broken English even back then, there isn't much difference between soldiers

@@gleisbauer25 Agreed!
I just discovered this song and LOVE the sound. It is probably my new favorite Sabaton song, and it is a shame it wasn't a "hit".
