Wagon ruts are still very visible to the south and east of Montpelier, Idaho and of course the sandstone cut trail ruts in the vicinity of Guernsey, Wyoming. It is truly amazing when you think about it.
The dirt was packed. Probably still hard enough to plug a ripper crossing them yet today. I've had to go back to the shop and get a sledge hammer to beat packed dirt from a cow path out from between the shanks, and cattle hadn't been on that ground in 5 years.
I enjoyed the video. I wish the music hadn't been louder than the narration. I would have understood more of what you were saying. I remember standing beside the tracks of the Oregon Trail in a rest area on I-80 outside Gothenburg, NE. It brought tears to my eyes.

Absolutely. It actually didn't fully hit home for me what the settlers were up against until I got caught in a blizzard along the Oregon Trail in Wyoming. That wasn't fun to deal with even with modern technology. I can't imagine what that would have been like in a covered wagon.
I've lived in western nebraska all my life and have seen much of this. When you see it every day you get used to it. Somehow I took a new look at it in your video and it seemed fresh. I enjoyed the video and even though the music was a bit loud I heard every word. Good job and a good topic.

My school bus stop was right on Oregon trail, now named Holcomb rd., Oregon City. One last small hill an wagons circled up for last time in Clackamette Park, where McD is now located.
Thank you for your video, which really captures the landscape. A few decades ago I drove a small part of this route, coming up from Denver via Sidney. Chimney Rock is still remarkable, if eroded, and Scotts Bluff is remarkable and beautiful. The drive up to the top for the view is not to be missed! Did walk up a little hill near the visitor center to see the wagon ruts. The center's exhibits are most interesting.
Chimney rock was hit by lightning a couple years ago. The army cleared a path through Mitchell pass, before that, they had to use Robideax pass, which I think added 16 miles to the trip.

Great video! Thanks for making it. Visited Windlass/ Ash Hollow for the first time this April, I’ll have to check out California Hill too! There’s still ruts near Plum Creek and Rock Creek Station as well.

Blows my mind did this in the late 20th century in a modern car took a week couldnt imagine in the 19th century. Also did this in the 90’s version on the trail. Mind blowing.
I think you mistook the cow paths as actual wagon wheel ruts. I live out here and everything you shown was modern cow paths. The actual trail exist for sure and is seen today and some wagon wheel indentions are seen across Nebraska.
Hello from Omaha. Great presentation. Omaha has a nice park with bronze sculptures of the pioneers. You might also want to add Rock Creek Station State Historical Park near Beatrice, as a Nebraska Oregon Trail stop. That was where the trail crossed the creek and where Would Bill Hitchcock killed his first man.
I am disappointed that you skipped Rock Creek Station, near Fairbury. Not only are there huge wagon ruts, but it was the stop over through which Mark Twain made his journey west. He wrote about it. It is also where James Butler Hickok, "Wild Bill", killed his first man, an incident greatly exagerated in dime novels of the day. Wwhen I was a boy, there were still VERY deep wagon ruts there. Hard to believe that they are all gone.

I live in Kearney, Nebraska, which is just north of Ft. Kearny. We have the postal service to thank for the spelling discrepancy. Someone in the post office simply made a spelling error and by the time it was realized, no one felt a change was necessary.

Nebraska is only flat if you follow the interstate! If going to the black hills, I suggest on the way in or out, Toadstool park and Fort Robinson at Crawford, Nebraska, Agate Fossil Beds, Scottsbluffs, and stop at the Legacy of the Plains museum at the base. Wildcat Hills a few miles south, then down us26 to see these, depending on which way home is. Highway 71 runs clear down through Colorado. There are good museums at Grand Island, the Stuhr Museum, Minden, Pioneer Village, and at North Platte, the Lincoln County Historical Museum, right near Buffalo Bill's retirement home, now a state park, and the observation tower at Bailey yard. en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_museums_in_Nebraska
