    Years ago, too many to remember exactly when, my life time biggest trout came from this section of the Owens River. A 4-5 lb Brown. Caught on a Panther Martin fished in the under cut bank. Thanks for sharing and for the reminder of that long ago day.

    The Owens River has always been my favorite place to fish. I have fished it since I was about 12 yrs. old, with my dad, and now I am 71. I will be there in Sept, staying at Brown's Campground. Hopefully it won't be so hot and there will be some catchable fish.

    Is the stretch above the Benton Crossing Bridge no longer a single hook/barbless zone too now?
    In the area below the Bridge/Campground and above Crowley, I've scored some Luthers & had 30+ fish days on Panther Martins/Rapalas. That used to be our "Sure Thing" area whenever the lakes weren't producing or got too crowded. I still have a "Secret Spot" that we stole from the "Guides" up there that's just minutes from where you are but You'll have to go over to Patreon for that info, lol.....or email Me.
    Thanks for the Video!

    We've fished that section of the Owens 4 - 6 times per year since 1955. Routinely caught 3 lb. to 6 lb. trout until they paved the dirt road leading to it. After the paved road, too many fishermen showed up and the fish got smaller and smaller and fewer and fewer. Now with no local hatcheries, almost no fish are planted there. We still love fishing the Owens but its just not the same as it was.

    • @welcometoorefuge
      @welcometoorefuge 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      What is...? Same deal here . Used to catch fish all day long "catch & release" , but now...last 3 trips We've all been skunked . The scenery makes it still a worthy trip up from OC .

      @@welcometoorefuge Fish or no fish, we will still fish it next Spring. I love the scernery of the Owens River, an important part of my life. back in the 70s and 80s, I caught a 5.5 lb. rainbow and a couple of 6 lb. browns right where you were fishing.

      Pretty good river as a whole. Gotta do a lot of spot checks to find the better spots. Has HUGE fish move in from the lake downstream ..but that's in the winter, and you need a snowmobile to get at em'

    That’s lame when they don’t allow bait, not power bait but worms and crickets, salmon eggs… but I get that most people who use bait tend to dump there trash along the bank. Maybe that’s why?

    • @TroutWest
      @TroutWest  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Has more to do with the fatality rate of bait related hooks like treble hooks and such. When a fish eats bait it tends to swallow it. When using a jig spoon or fly they tend to only be lipped. No method is perfect in keeping the fish alive in the end you're putting holes in the fish and dragging it through the water column but there are some methods that are a little less fatal I suppose.

    Is there a big difference in trout fishing Colorado vs California?

    • @TroutWest
      @TroutWest  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Good question. I'd say better fishing in Colorado by far. Less people fishing,more water everywhere containing fish. Overall just better but there are so many factors why as a whole it's hard to narrow down to a few. Now 20 years ago this Sierra could have maybe made this comparison more equal but as of today's fishing Colorado by a long shot.
