Also for some context about Soyeon's 'ethnic hip' comment - it's actually (G)I-DLE's desginated concept. The group before debut had a lot of language from Cube's statements etc calling them 'ethnic'. Obviously that in itself is problematic, but it's really her following the overall concept of the group as it was laid out for her to lead, not just something weird coming from her personally. That's why musically and visually their songs have had lots of different asian (latata)/middle eastern (hann)/latin (senorita)/american (uh oh)/african (lion) etc influences to them; and it's obviously in addition to the group itself being from four different nationalities (which by kpop's standards can be considered as ethnically diverse, lol). It is still appropriative but it's not in the same vein as to those who wear certain hairstyles or use certain language etc just because and appropriate some other culture purely for accessorising or what have you.

This is all true, we all know most idols have no bad intentions. However, there are a lot of things idols do need to be educated about when it comes to things they’ve said, done & worn because the people who actually live that everyday & not just for a concept or style in the moment feel that it’s not cool for them or the millions of fans watching to think that it’s appropriate or that their culture is a style for someone to look hip or cool at work when some of them can’t even get a regular job, hop on a plane or go out in public without getting stared at just because of their culture. @@DezzyMarch For sure, and to be honest, in this case it starts with educating the community. Idols literally have no idea and no means of gaining an idea until they hear (first or second hand) some backlash or something from social media. It's a result of the fact that the majority of them, sadly, aren't educated properly due to committing to life as an entertainer, and that a homogenous society like Korea that is still steeped in conservative attitudes won't have much awareness of concepts like cultural appropriation - it's only recently starting to filter through. When Twice got into hot water last year for wearing appropriative costumes, for instance, they genuinely had no idea that it would be considered offensive until after the fact - now they're aware, we saw their costumes this year being completely fine with no one appropriating anything. S'all about raising awareness and promoting positive reinforcement in the community and social media which will itself reach the companies and trickle down to the idols themselves.
I might end up working at Cube next year, so who knows, maybe I can even get something through to Soyeon directly! I'm sure it'd definitely make for a fascinating interview subject...
See I don't see that there's a problem with someone dressing like another culture. They do it because they like it, not because they are making fun of it or hating on it or being racist about it. We should embrace the freedom to be who we want to be, we don't have to dress like or be like the culture we were born into in this world, we just don't. Gay is now accepted, Transgender is now accepted, it should also then also be accepted that we can dress like and be like another culture if we want to be. There should be nothing wrong with that. There are always bad apples that will treat it wrongly and do it to make fun of people, that should be shunned, but doing it for the right reasons should be no trouble at all IMO. People need to be more open about sharing their culture, you should feel flattered, not offended.

Soyeon took this concept super serious because Soyeon created the whole entire thing. This is ALL her. She had an idea for concept, she wrote, produced, created the song by herself. She surprised the girls with it. They loved it! She asked the girls how did they imagine the set design and costume would fit best. They all have their ideas, and she picked the idea she liked and fit best. She completed her full vision and......here we are! 😂 She is truly a musical genius and these girls are concept queens. Every single thing they do is so different from their last but we can always tell it's them because G-idle has a distinct vibe. :)

Soyeon is the type of woman who will totally have you INTIMIDATED but will treat you like a sweetheart. Miyeon looked so good here. Her voice is awesome too. Minnie and Yuqi both have very unique voices that make them stand out. Baby Shuhua's voice caught all of us off guard (of course with the amount she had), but also the way she was able to switch into her lower register. She’s such an adorable maknae, I'm sure once she gets more comfortable in Korean,she will attract a lot more fans of her own. She is getting more lines too as seen in Lion. Soojin sounds amazing as well.

But... Idle has that I-don't-know-what (spanish term, I don't know if there's something like that in english xD) that makes them completely unique and above everything.
I can't really tell what, but each one of them are so different to each other that they complement THAT good they reach almost perfection in every way when they're together, and that isn't something that any group has.
Vocals, charisma, presence on stage, individual talent, producing, composing... I just don't know how they still are in the shadows and really gets me mad how underrated they are.

God I absolutely hate the whole cultural appropriation thing... Like, genuinely. If people want to experience things from other cultures, it's not appropriation. I've heard that people from other cultures actually like others experiencing their cultures, because they're proud of it. I remember seeing a video of someone asking people from Japan what they thought about Katy Perry wearing a kimono in one of her performances, and not a single one was mad, they were all really excited to see someone else trying things from their culture.
The idea of cultural appropriation is ridiculous. Let people do what they want to do as long as they're being respectful.

They make their own way and use their determination, talent and hard work to make their dream reality. They are the strongest and most empowering female rolemodels for any artist in Kpop. Acts like them and Mamamoo are in a different class then some more popular groups that have companies using their corporate connections to build public reputation and awareness.
