MY STORY //
Fourteen years of pain and failed ankle surgeries brought me to 2018, when I made the difficult decision to become a twenty-seven-year-old below-the-knee elective amputee. This channel is to document my journey of amputation surgery, recovery, and reclaiming my life.

My grandfather lost his finger on a work related accident. He went home with it on his pocket.
Years later he died and his finger (that was kept on an alcohol filed jar in the bathroom) was put on his coffin by my grandma, she said he wasn't complete without it

I asked the nurse what they did with my severed legs.
She said they were the "Mystery Meat" that they serve in certain dishes in the cafeteria.

From my understanding it just gets thrown into a giant hospital incinerator along with a bunch of bio waste and other amputated body parts, so I doubt you'd be able to.
You probably have to work with and pay a private Crematory to do that and depending on the hospital policies on releasing body parts might not be able to get the part to them but if you were I don't see why not
I think you should due to religous reasons. Some people want their whole body to be burried including amputated parts

she did say in the beginning that her hospital won’t give you your body part back unless it’s a religious purpose but other hospitals are more relaxed about it. if I got a body part cut off i’d definitely want it back so I could get the ashes back in a little necklace or do what the other girl in the video did and get the skeleton back to use it for something lol or make the bones into something cool and useful like a knife (obviously wouldn’t use it but how cool?) or a little trinket!

When I had my ovary removed, at age 21, I was unconscious so my mom told the doctors no. However, I was given a picture of the ovary, the fallopian tube and the cyst that cause the removal, so I framed that.

I had to have a metal pole in my leg replacing the bone for a few years till they worked out it was fitted wrong. When they took it out I asked if could keep it. Their response was “it will depend if we want to reuse it” wtaf? You use second hand ones?? Anyway it and the 3 screws are in my drawer! I got to keep them.

I was ran over by a drunk driver and had my left leg severed off and reconnected with rods screws and Pins and then had to have it all removed from Infection..In the end..lost it anyways..

I had an extra tooth surgically removed from the roof of my mouth when I was eight. (Just so you know this is NOT the norm and it is safer just to let the tooth come down so they can pull it but mine went backwards)
Years later, we are talking about it and my mom goes over to her jewlery box and pulled out both of the teeth I had removed that day!
I still have all 4 of my wisdom teeth that were growing sideways! I don't know what I want to do with them, but I think it's cool nonetheless

My gut reaction is “Give it back, it’s mine!” And then I get it back and I’m like ...do I keep it in the freezer? Do I have to care for it like a pet? I regret this choice lol.
Hahaha exactly! The only idea I had was to turn it into the worlds creepiest door stop. But would the dogs eat it? Would they bury it in the back yard? Who would be able to turn it into a door stopper for me? Too many complicated questions. 😂

I work in a pathology lab! And I can guarantee that we sometimes get random amputated things that were sent to us for testing even though there's nothing pathologically wrong with it. It's weird but I love seeing all the stuff we get, anatomy fascinates me :)

halloween idea:
Zombie foot pet.
Use heavy wire to hold the feet in front of you camouflaging it like a dog leash.
(like those invisible dog leash thingies but with zombie foot)
Pretty spoopy.
Attach prop foot with tape and pull up tall sock. Train dog to remove foot with teeth on command. Use crutches on Halloween, ring doorbell, command dog to do it's trick, catch people who faint.

I love your 'prop'! Seriously, this was very interesting to me. In 1990, I had a major internal organ removed after it tormented me for many years. I was quite happy to part with it and, truthfully, my life has been amazingly better since. I was quite curious about seeing it after though so I asked my surgeon if she could let me see it. She told me that wasn't possible, paused, and excitedly said, "I'll take a photo of if for you though!" I still have that somewhere though for some reason no one else wants to see it. :)
You can also request to have parts (or your whole self on death - usually parted out after autopsy) donated to search and rescue units or police departments for K9 HRD training. It’s a much better source of bones/decomp human remains for us than other places which often do bleaching/various other processing to them, and we have standards for how we handle them to prevent contamination into/out of scent containers. Unfortunately we often have to go the route of bone suppliers due to lack of availability of known good bone sources, which is a bummer and decreases our dogs’ accuracy.
And with mass bone suppliers there’s always the question - did this stuff come from a war crime or mass grave or something weird? And how aged is it and in what conditions? Soil conditions actually play a huge role in how things decompose, so being able to control aging in various environments we might work in helps a lot - you can really tell the difference between dogs that are trained on bought vs donated stuff.

My brother had a rod in his spine and it was too painful, they took it back out and they gave it to my parents. It was interesting to see.
My oldest wanted to keep mine because Halloween was the following month but they were like Oh Hell No! Lol
After briefly working in the OR in school... I decided that if I ever get a hip replacement I’m getting my femur head! And I’m getting the OR team to sign it like a baseball and I’m going to put it in a glass box. 🤗
i recently had a hip replacement surgery, asked to bring back the joint home, was denied, got the xrays from before and after the surgery tho
I used doner bone from someones hip before a replacement in my ankle. It is allot of paper work so many places dont bother
They're worried about potential liability in the future and will do all they can to preclude.

I’m a healthcare who works in a ward that deals with hip replacements and I got to go watch a hip replacement being done and I got to hold the woman’s hip ball joint because the surgeon wanted to get me ‘involved’ and she just threw it at me to catch 😂

Actually your foot wasn't probably in the incinerator just yet. It takes a bit for the path lab to do their thing and then the limb is most likely put in a big plastic bag, tagged, and sent to the morgue. They usually only incinerate things once a week even in big hospitals. They did NOT know what was causing my problems. I had an open wound for several years and it wouldn't heal. Thus the amputation. I specifically asked several of my doctors to confer about this, but it NEVER GOT DONE!!! SO HERE I AM!!! I'm an RN and an amputee. We still don't know what exactly has happened to me that has caused the severe nerve damage that led to the skin breakdown that ultimately led to the amputation. Plus mostly everything has happened to the right side of my body! Weird huh? Keep on doing the videos because we enjoy them and learn from them. Thanks so much!!!
I know that if you lose a body part to cancer, you can often donate it to research. In very rare cases people will donate their body parts for bone and skin transplants, but normally the condition that resulted in amputation prevents this from happening. Great video like always!

When people find out I'm an amputee and ask what happened to my leg, I tell them
"I don't know, we really didn't keep in touch after the operation" ..........usually gets a chuckle.
I did ask and the doc told me that it was considered Biohazard so the hospital had to dispose of it as such and couldn't give it to me. Not that I wanted it. But yeah, in most places it's treated as biohazard and disposed of.
He also told me of one guy that did get to taxidermy his own leg, but he was friends with doctors and they snuck the thing out for him. So it isn't something you can normally do.

Here in the UK, they send them to either a College or University so then the students can learn new things from them, Got told by my doctor
I believe, here in the US, a person can donate a body part to science. Just depends on the type of part and the demand for that from researchers and medical schools.

I had my foot electively amputated in September 2018 and before I had it done I read this book “Just One Foot: How Amputation Cured My Disability” by Judy Johnson Berna and in it she got her foot cremated, I told my mum about it and she was determined to get mine cremated too so we called the local funeral home and they sent us a form and now my cremated food is in a plastic container at my mums house.. I live in Australia but the lady who wrote the book lives in the US so yea...

There was a British soldier, “Bronco” Lane, who lost his toes and fingers on one hand to frostbite on an expedition to Mt Everest in 1976. When they couldn’t be saved, they were amputated and he kept them. Later they were donated to the British National Army Museum and are on display. Bronco was known to go to the museum to visit them on occasion.
Hi, I had my amputation Dec.28 2020. I’m 58 and type 2 diabetic. I would say I’m lucky as far as pain. Came home from hospital Jan. 7 2021. Just got my 2nd shrinker. The fact that u own a fake severed foot is going to help me smile my way through the rest of this year😂 I have multiple mental illnesses, they effect me incredibly in day to day life. I am home schooled I don’t go to any clubs I don’t go out unless I really really need to. It’s also effecting me physically as I stay in bed majority of my day everyday which will eventually cause my muscles to waste away. I’m saying this to inform not to feel sorry for myself. The hardest part for me is that people can’t see my illness and I’m often mistaken for being defiant / lazy. I’ve been struggling greatly with 2020 and I was worried this would be a bad year for me but I have just found u and your channel I can already observe that your personality is absolutely incredible and I now have faith that if nothing else watching u can help me through the rest of the year.
I lost my husband last year but this would have made him laugh. I had my first amputation in 2015. It was my great toe on my right foot. He absolutely begged the dr to let me take it home. I didnt want to, as it creeped me out lol. He was a tattoo artist and wanted to tattoo it and keep it in a jar. Dont ask, I have no idea lol. I lost him 6 months before I lost my left leg. I can only imagine how hard he would have begged me to try and keep that. He did a memorial photo of my toe and put it on Facebook. It had a halo and wings. I didnt know he did that until I came home from the hospital and saw all of the hysterical Facebook messages! I really miss his crazy humor. I love your videos. I hope you continue to make more!

I worked in a hospital as an Environmental Specialist, and I took care of the biohazard waste as a main part of my job.
At the hospital, limbs were taken to pathology and tested/photographed/etc after surgery, then, depending on the day, was either taken to the morgue to be kept cool or taken directly to me.
I would get it completely bagged... But a red opaque bag... I would then put it in a biohazard box and filled it with a mixture of formaldehyde and a few other things.
After this, the box would sit in a warehouse for a day or 2 and picked up by bio-waste control and disposed of in a massive incinerator.
Here's a strange bit - entrails are not taken care of in this way. After all tests have been taken, most organs are cut into smaller pieces during tests, and then once it is done, they will put the remains in a bio bag, and those go into our normal bio steamers...
Essentially.... We cooked human body parts in a 500°F steamer, and then disposed of them in a compactor which is picked up by bio-med waste companies.
Yeah.... I loved that job, but I'm glad I work IT now

I'm not an amputee but when I was 12 years old, I had surgery to take out all the screws and pins and plates that had been in my leg, I don't remember asking to keep them but when I woke up after surgery they were in a jar on the table in recovery, I took them home and remembered my favorite thing for a while after was taking them to school and letting people physically touch the screw and then casually mention that they had been in my knee for six years...
Our anatomy teacher brought in all kinds of things. She lost her eye in a car accident (if you hit the back of your head hard enough your eye actually pops out) so she'd bring in all of her fake eyes for us to see. She had a full globe one but she said she preferred the half one. She also brought in her screws and her wisdom teeth when she got them out. She was pretty cool.

As somebody who is studying medicine and has been exposed to dead bodies (those donated to science mainly) and is 100% cool with that, I cannot imagine being even slightly comfortable with the idea of taking my own severed body parts with me. If I ever have to have an amputation, please dear colleagues, take the human meat part that was once part of my mortal being and dispose of it in the most expeditious manner!

The thought of being able to telepathically feel your severed foot being burned is so freaky yet so interesting. I have no idea how real it is but it’s still so fascinating to think about.
I’m not an amputee but if I ever got a limb removed, I would be flat out against keeping my severed limb. Even if it wouldn’t be a health hazard, the thought of having my severed limb sitting in the corner of my room for no reason freaks me out a bit.

This was a question I never thought I would ever think of asking anyone
I live in southern Manitoba, Canada and one of the local Indigenous tribes have a tradition that you are to be buried with all your body parts, they even keep baby teeth for people's eventual burial. If they loose a limb they keep it until burial. Toes and fingers too.
When my old youth pastor had his leg and hand amputated they were both sent to a research center because he has such a rare form of cancer it isn’t even officially identified as a cancer
I know this isn’t even anywhere close to losing your foot, but I lost a little chunk of my pinky and I remember for a while after surgery and having my nail reattached I had a really hard time processing that a little chunk of what was once me is now just ash and is just gone. I remember seeing the chunk in a cup of ice before they took it away.
In the UK all severed limbs become the property of the surgeon who amputated the limb.
This was an effect of the Anatomy Act of 1832 that followed the Burke & Hare Scandal (It has since been reported by a Human Tissue Authority).
As noted Jo most limbs are as you note incinerated. However due to the nature of the deformation of my right leg. It wa de fleshed and the bones were mounted.
Today it is a teaching aid in the morbid pathology department of the hospital I attend in London.
I remember a 'show and tell' at primary school in the 1960s where one boy brought in a bag of human bones. His father worked at the country museum and had let him borrow the bones.
This seems like a good place to share this. My Girlfriends Dad recently passed away, he was diabetic and had lost his leg awhile ago. The leg got left at the hospital. I asked her if she was going to get it back and maybe make a lamp out of it, she asked her brother if he wanted it for a lamp, and a great laugh was had by all. The visual picture of the Fishnet leg lamp quickly flashed in my mind. LOL Sadly the very expensive leg was probably thrown in the trash.

I worked in anatomopathology lab. We do have every parts of the human body that have been surgically removed in the hospital.
But I think in France we keep it for a month in formaldehyde before incinerated it.

Great idea, I didn’t get to keep mine either, my teenage son so wanted to keep my leg high on his shelf! I saw mine placed on a try and placed into a yellow bag, a medical waste bag! I did get to see my mangy old leg walking past me as a nurse was carrying it on a tray! I could only have a spinal and a little bit of the good stuff so I remember the whole thing, my surgeon kept me entertained with his one leg stories! The burning leg pain was intense, I was wired up to a morphine drip I got the hang of that quite quickly! I’m three years since my amputation with no false leg, my fibula has attached it self into the end of my stump, so I’m still on morphine! You have done amazing, I hope everyone knows how marvellous you are! 🦶🏼🦵
I know of a lady who also had a planned amputation and she did work out with the hospital and a funeral home to have her foot privately cremated and the ashes returned to her. For her it was more about coming to terms with her situation and saying goodbye and moving on.
Am I the only one who actually got scared when she bent to get the fake foot? Like I genuinely thought: "Oh heck, what if she actually kept it?"
Amputated limbs are incinerated. They are usually wrapped in the paper the sets of instruments are wrapped in and then placed in a long bucket. The reason why the amputated limbs sre wrapped in paper is because the limb shows through the yellow bins and it freaks people out. I used to work in the operating theatres at a district general hospital.
Share this with you. My friend had a arm amputated. He had three options, 1) cremated, medical donation and a forensic decomposition farm, where they study how bodies decompose. Eating human flesh. Well there is evidence that eating human flesh can cause severe brain malfunctions, much like Mad Cow Disease. Apparently this was recorded during the siege of Stalingrad during WWII. Oh, one option for disposal. Not sure how they prepare it. But K-9 handlers who train dogs for cadaver searches are always in need of “human material” to be used in the training of their dogs as it is very difficult to come by.
I just had a hip replacement done here in New Zealand and I could have got my bits back, but I decided not to. I also had the same with a thyroid operation.
Generally incinerated. My grandfather was an army surgeon in WWII and Korea (drafted both wars) and they just buried them in a pit. Here in the US, he told me they were just incinerated with other med waste.
Great video! Would it be possible to freeze amputations in the event you are burned or injured and in need of skin grafts, tendons, ligaments, etc?
Back in the 70’s, my father had his gallbladder removed. I took it to school in a jar. I don’t remember what eventually happened to it.

I think I've commented something similar on a different video, but I had brain surgery a decade ago and it took me like eight years for it to even occur to me I could have asked about having a sample, WHICH WOULD HAVE BEEN SO COOL.
It's definitely something I'd keep in mind for future surgeries I might ever need. I'd do my best to turn whatever it is into an art piece if it was suited for it.
It make sense, keeping any dead flesh around for no reason can cause sever biohazard issue. Plus cremation(burning of corpse) and storing the ash in a urn and store in a graveyard(not an actual graveyard but buildings that hold these urn for you to pay respect to) is a common way to handle human death in asia where lands are limited so burial is an expensive choice as compared to cremation.
When I was a kid there was an old man who lived in our street who had two wooden legs. One night his house caught fire and the fire brigade was called to fight the flames. The fire brigade was able to save the house, but unfortunately the old man was burnt to the ground.
I worked in pathology. We didn’t incinerate them immediately. They stayed in the morgue refrigerator for a few weeks to make sure nothing else is needed from them. We would photograph them, only if we felt it necessary for documenting the pathological circumstances, if applicable. For those who's religion or peace of mind required them to be buried “whole”, we would send the limb to a funeral home. They can bury it in a plot that you would also use, later, and that’s how you could be buried with the leg...complete.
You know, I have pretty screws up feet. I think I have arthritis in my lower legs which hurts a lot from time to time. My ankles are pretty ruined too. About a month ago, I stepped on glass and I don’t think I ever got all of it out.

I had a really bad infection in my leg before amputation..And they sent mine to a university for research.
They go in the trash. I know because I am a medical technologist (work in the lab) and I’ve worked in microbiology where we get body parts and we cut the piece that we need and we send it to pathology. Then Pathology may run tests on it or check it for anything like cancer, infection, etc. Whether it stays with us or gets send to pathology, once we are done with it we put it in a fridge to preserve it (otherwise it rots). After a week, we will dispose of it and throw it in a biohazard bin. For example, on Monday I throw away everything I worked on last Monday only as that would be 7 days. We keep it for that long in case we need to run more tests or send it out. Biohazard bins contain anything that can be pathogenic and that includes blood, stool, urine, and body parts. Things that come in contact with these things will also go in a biohazard bin like the containers were we keep them. I’ve received full lungs, pieces of skin, fingers, a foot (resembling the one in the video), parts of a skull, and a lot more. We set out our biohazard bins where they all get collected and taken out to get incinerated.
Because we don’t interact with the patient sometimes I wonder what their story is. Occasionally, I would receive a body part that seems too important to be coming to me (crucial to stay in alive) and when I was just starting I wanted to call the nurse and ask, “are you sure you don’t need this?” Of course I didn’t cal because I knew it wasn’t a mistake and even if it was, it would be too late. It just seemed like too much. One of these questionable parts was the top of a skull because it was the entire top and another was a full lung, the entire right lung with all of its lobes.
I can imagine her waking up from surgery asking if she could have the foot back and then the doctor holding it and then saying,”no.. it’s mine now”
for the eating human meat question it's relatively safe if you don't eat too much or the brain.. if you eat the brain you get like a mad cows disease kind of thing but in people.. now if you are wondering how and why i know this.. there should be a documentary somewhere on youtube (or at least there was one when i watched it) about this topic and it mainly covered a case of some tribes in africa wich have a culture in wich it's actually respectful to eat your kin when they die so they can like live on in them. however whenever they'd eat the brain a ton of them would get sick loose appetite loose motor skill and eventually die. i don't know the exact science behind it but it's a pretty interesting topic to like think about.. of course there are some other not so friendly stories about this topic like the japanese guy who like ate people.. and some other stories of like a guy that invited another that actually wanted to be eaten or something.. like some people are insane
The leg lamp guy still had the lamp in 2017. And has been working with getting protheses to Gambia.
