I read the book back in the early 70s while in the Navy. I loved the book, my mother a devote Catholic was scandalized but I didn't see it that way, it was a "what if" scenario. The "what if" Jesus was just tempted but actually took the devil up on his offer, the second half of the book is about what might have happened...in the end well the ending didn't change. It's not sacrilegious at least not in my estimation.

The film includes a disclaimer stating "This film is not based on the Gospels, but upon the fictional exploration of the eternal spiritual conflict."[5]

The symbolism here is genius. The circle is protection. Connecting Jesus to his father. The visitations are inner monologues of Jesus's self. Satan dwelt among them therefore tempting christ.
All stories of sacrifice, honor and redemption fascinate and appeal to us because we cleanse and redeem ourselves through them and we wish that what we see and read in those stories were true.
For me this film made the New Testament believable in ways that no other Jesus movie ever did. We're all really lucky Scorsese didn't make this film five years earlier without Willem Dafoe, which apparently almost did happen. The crucifixion scene was like a classical painting, and just mind blowing. Quite possibly the best film of the 1980s.
@@indicphilosopher8772 But this story is not in christian holy books. The last temtation is the title of novel written by a greek writer named Nikos Kazantzakis. It represents a different version about his life. But Kazantzakis had travelled in India and knew a lot about philosofy and religion of the East.
Circles of protection are *not* a wiccan invention; wicca was invented in the 1950s or so by a British guy who claimed to base them on ancient traditions but never provided any evidence that he was telling the truth. Circles of protection go back at least to Sumer, who called the practice Zisurru and used flour of various kinds as an apotropaic barrier against specific evils. Barley flour in a circle around the bed protected one against illnesses and night terrors, eg. Personally, I believe they are much older than Sumer, and go back to the Younger Dryas at least, to the unknown civilizations that, I think it's clear, were destroyed in that global cataclysm that so resembles the great deluge found not only in the Bible and Sumerian myths but in some 350 or so other cultures on every inhabitable continent. One even finds hints of such magical circles in megalithic architecture, cave paintings, and rock art. They're not even necessarily denotative of magic; one might conceive of them as a visual representation of one's wish to purify oneself and enter the correct frame of mind, to shut out all outside influences that do not accord with the purpose of the rite, ritual, spell, or prayer...if there's any real difference between the three except for how one conceives of some as godly and beneficial, some as malign and sorcerous, and some as merely a prop with psychological significance, an aide de memoire if text is incorporated, and a visible, tangible sign that stabilizes one's otherwise imprecise, dimly visualized, even fungible intentions.

just amazing scene.. scorsese is the master for a reason
In spite of everything Jesus has done for you, eventually you will hate him.
A lot of symbolic imagery in here, I love it.
Scorsese’s rationale about this is that if you’re in the desert for 40 days with no food and you see something pass by, it’s gonna talk to you.
I cannot believe there is a movie with Willem Dafoe as Jesus Christ.
The symbolism here is genius. The circle is protection.
Connecting Jesus to his father.
The visitations are inner monologues of Jesus's self.
Satan dwelt among them therefore tempting christ.
circles are used in rituals in certain religions. I myself don't need a circle to sit in.
God asks us
To be Christ like
Not to die for people who decided we are to be a sacrifice
Wake up fools
NOW
🙏
Willem Dafoe then: I'm the Messiah
Willem Dafoe in 2002: *OuT aM i!*
Amazing scene. Amazing movie. I saw it in Chicago when it opened and there were tons of picketers outside.
Man like that snake sounded so damn creepy
Snake Was Satan
"He was tempted at all points" ❤
It's interesting how similar this story is to the story of Buddha under the Bodhi tree.
Abrahamic faiths plagiarize different stories from other religions and call them as their own
Amen
@Leo Peridot
Also krishna is said to be an avatar of supreme deity in Hinduism.. And is considered immaculate being born to slay the evil king
@@indicphilosopher8772 But this story is not in christian holy books. The last temtation is the title of novel written by a greek writer named Nikos Kazantzakis. It represents a different version about his life. But Kazantzakis had travelled in India and knew a lot about philosofy and religion of the East.

Okay man.. I didnot know about that
This should have won all the Oscars and awards.
Funny how he drew a wiccan circle of protection around him.
Funny how such a simple delusion can be so pervasive
Isnt originally wiccan. goes much older. fool
Ever hear of a Jewish scholar called Honi the Circle Drawer?
2:09 devil be like:
Yo chill!
I don’t think Jesus was that aggressive😂
He should have been Satan instead
Why does satan have a NY accent? I guess he’s from Hell’s Kitchen
I forgot about one of the things that definitely improved this movie: Peter Gabriel’s incredible score
