In 2017 we traveled thru the area from Farmington on our way west into Arizona. I was looking forward to seeing Shiprock but had no idea it would be as impressive as it was. When we first saw it we were still 40 or 50 miles away and it dominated the landscape. Devil's Tower gets a lot more play but Shiprock is every bit as spectacular, if not more so. I'm not given to any kind of "new age" hyperbole, but the place is imbued with a very palpable spiritual quality. If you should find yourself in the Mesa Verde Natl. Park area, I think it's well worth a side trip to see this.( And if you go, be respectful. It's considered sacred for a reason.)
