We applied this coating on July 2020. Its now August 2022 and upon last inspection I noticed weakness in the coatings hydrophobics. That doesn't equal coating FAILURE but it was starting to fail and we are being proactive ahead of winter to remove and recoat.

You convinced me that applying wax even twice a year or every 8 months, is much less labor intensive (and less expensive) than prepping, polishing and reapplying a new coating every couple of years.

Normally if they weren't willing to put the time in effort into looking after a more expensive coating I would maybe offer something like seal & shine but since they are willing to pay for a better coating but do realize there not gonna look after it you are offering the right approach. 👍🇨🇦

Chelsea your approach was spot on. I have the same philosophy of letting them know the blunt truth about tunnel washes. But they still want it. I make an agreement with them to only use a touch less car wash only when absolutely required. Fewer scratches that way but it brings in 3-5 pH car wash soap. Thanks

I'm not a pro but an enthusiast that enjoys doing my own work and taking care of my cars. Are you saying the self serve touchless car washes are in the 3-5 pH range, or the automatic touchless washes? And are either/or safe for a consumer grade coating? (in my case Adams Graphene)

You bring up a great point on durability. I’ve contemplated on dropping the “5yr” and sell it as a 3 or 4 yr. When I was looking at car pro pro grade coatings they don’t list durability. When I called to ask they said we don’t list durability because we can’t guarantee it because it’s depending on how it’s maintained BUT 3yrs is what we’ve seen tested realistically in the real world.

Excellent work as always and I like your choice of coatings. This may be a customer who needs a ceramic one year topper added every six months or they can just see you every three months. I feel the car washes are not going to stop so adding a one year topper every six months may be the best option. Thank you for the video.

I agree with your approach, Chelsea. Although the coating is going to degrade significantly from those automatic car washes, it's going to take the brunt of the damage, therefore helping to preserve the clearcoat more than a sealant would.

Personally, I would push for something like McKee’s 37 Graphene Sealant and apply like once a year. You wouldn’t have to polish to remove it, just do a strip wash, clay towel, iron decon, clean up the paint with McKee’s 37 Graphene 3-In-1 Ceramic Polish, and reapply the Graphene Sealant. At the 6 month maintenance mark apply something like Hydro Graphene Ceramic Coating to boost the sealant. Granted, you don’t have quite the protection that a dedicated coating offers, but you don’t have to worry about polishing to have that clean slate in order to apply a new coating or LSP. Using something like the 3-In-1, it would take a long time to have a measured decrease in paint thickness versus a dedicated polish, and the Graphene Sealant would offer stronger protection than just a regular synthetic sealant. Granted, I’m just an enthusiast and not a business owner, so my opinion may not be worth a bucket of spit, but just thought I’d throw it out there for you to do with as you will. Love your videos - keep up the great work! 👍🏻❤️

    Hey Chelsea,
A great video and very, very helpful...thanks! On another note, in the video, I noticed that you were washing the vehicle barefooted. You really need to be careful when using any type of chemicals. Never be barefoot when using any kind of harsh chemicals. As just a caution, you should also wear gloves.
I only want you to be safe and have no issues later in life. God Bless you and keep the videos coming!

That was an amazing turnaround. I really appreciate your expertise and honesty about what the expectations should be in this process. I am actually a 22 year veteran pharmaceutical sales rep who started doing coatings during the pandemic. I detailed cars back in college on and off for 9 years so I had a basic understanding of paint correction back in the Stone Age. Now I am in for $1,000’s with a Rupes Big Foot DA 15 MM, a Rupes Nano, and 3 in. Griots DA. What can I say, anything worth doing is worth over doing. So I am a DIY enthusiast and I really do love learning about how to get better. I have a 5 year professional coating on my wife’s Jeep Grand Cherokee. It was Black Pearl by Car Brite. We do not keep it in a garage and it is starting to fail after less than 2 years and that vehicle has never been through a car wash and I really did try to maintain it perfectly. I recently got certified to apply System X and I am going to put Maxx on it, which is supposed to be a lifetime coating. I’ll believe that when I see the durability for myself. I will also be putting it in the garage when it gets re-coated to try and protect the coating even more. Thank you for what you do. I really do learn a lot from you.

I tell my coating clients that if they have to use an automatic wash to use a touchless wash. While it may not get their vehicle super clean, it will help preserve the paint as opposed to the tunnel wash with the "all cloth brushes".

Chelsea, you mentioned of 15 coatings you tested, McKee's37 Graphene gave best chem. resistance. By chance, was GYEON Snycro EVO or Pure EVO or the Gtechniq/CQuartz UK 3.0 line incl. in those tests? All 4 of those are pretty heavy hitters for chemical resistance in all the test's I've seen done. I can't believe McKees37 Graphene would beat them out, but who knows.

It’s not recommended as it can weaken ceramic coatings but it won’t kill it immediately. They’re designed to be chemically resistant, but they’re not chemical proof and the soaps used at the automatic car washes can greatly weaken them so you’re right it’s not recommended, but I tell customers if they’re going to go through it which they always do even though i could make a hundred videos showing the dangers of them, regardless, make sure you’re using a ceramic topper to replenish the hydrophobics but expect the life of your coating to be cut in half at least

I also don't offer warranties and prefer to do more vehicles of within an affordable price than a few with a high price.
If the customer wants it coated and willing to pay for it then is a matter of doing it with the one that we know is stronger but customer must be aware not to go through carwash again because of the state of the clear coat which is now compromised. Great you had today a helping hand with your kid 👌💪😄
