I've heard and read many reviews for this film. As always, this one provides rich context. The discussion of class and the 'real' value of education (avoiding military service) and reaffirming privilege is as important as it is lacking in other reviews. Thanks!
Peter I had no idea you were online reviewing films :), what a joy. This was a superb set piece film, it could have been a play or a film, but payne given the story life on screen opened the story to a bigger audience, and your review really saw the touch painting on the themes the film explored.
You're the Man , Pete ! Beautiful word-smithery .
Thanks for the review. You are right this film is a masterclass from everyone involved. A homage, in some ways, to the great films of the 1970's, that sadly, don't get made anymore.
I've only seen hold overs, poor things and Oppenheimer from the nominated( Oscars) films. I can definitely say that holdovers is better than the other two and it might be one of the new Christmas classic films. Spectacular performances from everyone. What a great film. I don't mind it being in the seventies, I am not sure how it could have the same vibe in a current era story.
There's going to be an Election sequel?! Great film, this. Agree with every word of your review.
A beautifully written, acted and directed little gem, a film that makes you think “they don’t make them like this anymore”
One of my favourites of the last couple of years or so
Great review as always
Great review and a great to watch film.
Always a plesure Peter ❤
Fantastic review Peter.
Thanks!
I enjoyed it because it is gentle and sweet and the acting is very good. I felt it didn't quite earn all of its overbearing 70s nostalgia. The opening credits sequence was darn right indulgent. Still waiting for Payne to better Election as a production.
An interesting point re the 70's setting. I wonder if the nostalgia of the filmmakers of a certain age (around my age) for the era is a 'problem'. Re Anderson's Liquorice Pizza I felt it was somewhat stifling in comparison to Inherent Vice. As a visual artist I am aware that references in my own work bear a certain similar nostalgic bearing. Perhaps it is wholly constructive to return to draw on the same sources that formed us as kids.
never knowingly undersold
Paul Giamatti can do no wrong.
👏👏👏
