Burry Port & Cefn Sidan - The Aftermath. 02/02/2014

- With much improved weather conditions today, I went down to both Burry Port Harbour, and Cefn Sidan Beach, see the aftermath of the recent storm since my last visits.
At Burry Port Harbour, there was still a high tide, but with much reduced wind force, things were far more tranquil.
I then went down to Cefn Sidan Beach, and was shocked to find far more erosion of the Sand Dunes than my last visit just over a week ago. The only access currently open to access the beach is the main one, and even that is blocked by debris from the storms.
The sad thing is that this damage can never be repaired, and will continue to lose ground during the forthcoming storms forecast for the coming week.

That wreck has been visable since 1929 Justin, although the tide has to be out to view it.....The erosion of the sand dunes can never be reversed.....Bob
Brilliantly captured Bob showing how much has change in such a short period of time.So many storms in a matter of a month doing a lot of damage.Some good has come out of it showing the seawrecks from the past that went aground on the sea banks..(C&A)
Thanks both, I'm pleased you liked it....the wreck hasn't been exposed by the storms, it's been there since 1929 and only seen when the tide is out....it is however disappearing fast....Bob

Nice bit of tidying up to be done now Bob , its amazing what gets washed up after the storms ...should be a few beachcombers around checking all this out
It's all wood and plastic bottles Davie, the worst part is the loss of so much of the sand dunes, which of course cannot be replaced....Bob

Yes Bob sad to see erosion taking more of the sand dunes.
I have seen that over the years when my wife and I would go to Prince Edward Island. They have tried to slow it down by bringing in large boulders from the mainland and I think it is helping in most places. They get some real bad winter storms coming in off the Atlantic.
The sad thing is Wayne, that the loss from the dunes will never be replaced, and leaves them even more vulnerable to further errosion...Bob
great video bob, and info, at porthcawl during the storms here, several ancient cannons off old galleon ships was uncovered, which have now gone into local museum at porthcawl

lovely video, well presented and presented Bob, and the historical info was very interesting. Your can really excels in bright sun and shiny surfaces, seeming handle these conditions with ease. I remarked in your last video about the similarity between your beaches and our Irvine Beach and I was again surprised by the similarity of storm damage at both locations. The sand dunes at Irvine have all but been washed away and the rock cages have been tossed away like empty sacks! Erosion on a grand scale

Thanks for your kind comments, the X920 excels in all conditions, there's no flare even when shooting directly into the sun. This current bout of bad weather is causing concern all over the Country, with damage that changes things for ever...Bob

Around the 2 min mark, I thought you were patrolling the local tip, so much rubbish around.
I take it those are the remains of some old ship poking up out of the sand Bob?

I know Paul, all along the beach there were hundreds of plastic bottles and containers....The wreck is the SV 'Paul' which was grounded in storms in 1929 and has been there ever since.....Great to hear from you...Bob
Dear me Bob, that beach looks more like a battlefield with all the debris. The loss of part of the dunes must have future implications for the land behind them too, and with more storms forecast it doesn't look good. At least in this spell of relative calm you had some wonderful light for filming
I know Austin, it's upsetting to see something that has been there so long being lost in such large amounts, and now being exposed to future storms the soft sand will erode even further. The towns of Pembrey and Burry Port rely on the protection provided by the Dunes, on the protection of the Atlantic Ocean...Bob
Another great video Bob, not sure if you saw my comment on your previous video ? The aftermath of the storm is pretty dramatic, such a shame about the erosion on the dunes...but the sheer amount of debris washed up , and the rocks was unbelievable. We were in Blue Anchor yesterday, and it was almost too dodgy to drive the car down the Sea Front road because of the large amount of pebbles thrown over the wall on Saturday nights High tide. Thanks Steve, these comments seem to turn up eratically at the moment. It's upsetting to see what is effectively, the protection for us from the Atlantic forces being eroded away at such a rate. It cannot be reversed, and the change from a wedge shape of sand to a cliff like profile, making them even more vulnerable to future storms.......Best wishes to you ....Bob
Devastation Bob......very sad...as for the wreck, I actually used to climb inside it in the late 60 early 70s until the sandbanks shifted .
We had to hotfoot back to the caravan site st Ishmaels before we were cut off by the incoming tide......regards Brian
There were many people who were trying to access the beach at Cefn Sidan along well worn paths to find the were faced with a twenty foot drop preventing them from doing so....Sounds as though you have some Happy memories Brian....these days with the Bombing Range at the West End, you'd not be allowed to walk the full length of the beach....Bob

Well I'm blowed. I never knew that was where Amelia E. landed Bob. (Landed sounds wrong for a seaplane but can't think of a better word!!) Power stuff is water and the damage it can do is amazing especially when driven by such winds. Hope this isn't just another lull before the next storm. Chris
This was the first time a woman had flow across the Atlantic Chris, although on this occasion, she was a passenger....With regards to the damage, there are further high tides and strong winds forecast this coming week.....Bob

Sadly, it can never be replaced Rich, much of the debris comes from the Rivers flowing into the sea, but it also shows that plastic doesn't decompose.....Bob
Bob, I saw the wind storm in several films covering the Cambrian Express; were these the same storm winds that hit your area?
So sad to see such a beautiful location racked by the ocean waves, the winds and the tide; but if I know the British spirit, you will have it back as close to normal as it can be in no time at all.
My thoughts are with you and with the people of this area; may they be safe in the coming weeks of more bad weather.

This bad weather has hit many areas of the Country Dave....the Cambrian Coast Railway and around the town of Aberystwyth has been severely damaged.
As you say, we are a resilient lot, and hopefuly will bounce back....unfortunately, we're not out of the bad weather yet...Regards...Bob
Bob, That had to be a very intense storm to cause so much erosion and move those good sized rocks in the video. Yes, there is no way to stop the erosion and trying to replace the area washed away would take far more money that could be raised and there is no way of judging how much time and effort it would take

It's been a combination of very high tides, strong winds and tide surges from the Atlantic that seem to keep on coming that's causing all this coastal damage Tommy....There is more forecast so fingers crossed, there won't be too much further damage....Regards...Bob
we keep getting snow storms but they are nuisance ones, dropping a few inches at a time. Very dangerous cold too with wind chill values WAY below freezing. We have seen -20.5 C so far for a morning temperature and daytime highs that are no way near freezing for weeks. The snow falling during these bitterly cold temps is like sugar, very crystalline and light.

The damage seems important and dunes have suffered. Unfortunately as your video start date of February, things have not improved since as in the UK and France, the tempest still continues. Cyfeillgarwch.

Great video, Bob - very atmospheric! As I understand it, the "Paul" is right down the very far end of the beach, past the bombing range and in the mouth of the Gwendraeth - opposite St Ishmael's holiday village. The ship in the picture looks like the one not far from the rocks about 15 minutes walk from the main beach entrance, or have I got it wrong?
Thanks John, that's put a spammer in the works, I've always believed that the wreck shown her was that of the SV 'Paul' and certainly looks like the size of photographs I've seen of her. I must investigate further if you say that she is situated much further West along the beach near the River Gwendraeth.......Regards...Bob
Guess the storm has changed the shape of the locality for good. I'm tempted to say 'what a load of rubbish' but would be referring to the flotsam and jetsam along the shore. That will take a time to shift. But I see from the dog walkers and the hang gliders that they're making the best of it. Excellent video. One for the archives?

Interesting footage! The weather seems a bit strange at the moment. We had Daisy's growing in the front garden last week in the midst of a hailstorm here on the South coast! Check ot the Hawkydavis channel. The weather around the globe is not right?? interesting stuff!
