Lots of people pulled this prank, which is why the Simpsons riffed on it. When I was a kid I'd look up people with unfortunate names and prank them, too. I'd really like to take this moment to apologize to Mr. Isaac Hawkes, who I believe entertained my friends and I on perhaps more occasions than he really deserved. :P
