I had the opportunity this fall to try the R 01 Four (Ultegra DI2) and the Cannondale Supersix Hy mod 2 (also Ultegra DI2) back to back at my LBS. Took them both on a 15km public road loop and finished within a few seconds and watts of each other. The Hy mod, with its 25mm tyres compared to the BMC’s 26 felt more compliant on rougher surfaces, less twitchy downhill above 50kmh. Out of the box, the shorter reach of the Hy Mod suited me better, although a shorter stem could have been fitted to the BMC, but perhaps rendering it twitchier. Both bikes were astonishingly fast for non dedicated aero bikes, with great power transfer. Two excellent upper tier all rounders! I really wanted to like the BMC better! But its significant curb appeal couldn’t make up for its slightly harsher ride and twitchiness. So as a 58 year old non racer, I made the more rational decision and went for the Cannondale. But I tell you, if I had been ‘’a few’’ years younger…….😉 Ps riding on 28mm Conti 5000’s, this HyMod feels almost as smooth as the best endurance bikes, only faster. Much faster!
Nice to hear. I bought a Cannondale SSE hi-mod last year and have been enjoying it immensely. I've seen some attractive new releases come out since then, such as the BMC reviewed here, and it's comforting to hear from someone who's tried them both and ended up going with the SSE :)
Just got to fool some of the people some of the time. Overall the bike industry has been hit by falling sales and top end isn't immune, so they are counting on brand loyalty and enough top end customers to fall for new aero design
Deeper wheelset would have something to do with that 1W difference if not that overall margin of error or just overall testing condition and or other uncontrollable variables. 5,000 GBP more than the Canyon is just maddening as the Aeroad is not exactly affordable itself. I hate to be the hater, but I hope the market does adjust itself accordingly.
he's a manufacturer, you could copy the product description and paste it on chatGPT, asking it to give you the script for a video where you're praising the product and this is what it would gives you
@@davidarthur “The 10 Best Road Race Bikes of 2024 I’ve Reviewed So Far…” what’s the thumbnail on that one (ik it’s clickbait) but hey it’s right there visually 🤷♂️ also @ 12:25 you mention how it’s the race bike you’d pick if you were racing. You also mentioned it again in the video “The BEST Bikes of 2024 (and the Ones to Avoid)” @ 2:57 but why would that be that in 2 different videos you mention how you’d pick that bike if you were racing? Idk maybe bc it’s the fastest?
@DaveCM you completely miss the point. It’s not about affordability. I choose not to spend money on things i deem overpriced for what they are. A push bike should not be the 1/4 of the price of a very nice sports car. Even if you consider the other costs of ownership of the lotus it’s still not even close
Hi David, by always only reviewing the top end versions of bikes you are going along with manufacturers trying to trick us into thinking that the ride feel of these superbikes trickles down into the ones people will actually buy, the ones with the cheaper carbon layup, wheels and finishing kit. Please insist on reviewing the latter as well.
Great review as always David. Regarding the crosswind sensitivity, I’d put this down to the DT Swiss wheels. I rode a set of 1100 DICUTs wheels some time ago and had the same experience every time I went through an underpass or past a gate or driveway on windy days. When I switched the wheels out for Enve 6.7s (on the same bike) the problem completely disappeared.
David, did you ever complete a long-term review of the new BMC RoadMachine? Your first look video went up 7 months ago and I’ve been waiting for your long-term review
I was stuck between this and the Dogma F. I went Dogma F because although it’s not stated, will fit a 33 mm tire (Measured width) and isn’t limited to 36 cm bars. However, BMC did point out to me that the cockpit is interchangeable to the Roadmachine bar/stem that can be had in other widths in what is basically the same shape. Hopefully they do a refresh for wider tires.
5 things I don't like. 1. Press fit. 2. Press fit. 3. Press fit. 4. Press fit. 5. Press fit. Kudos to David for finally addressing this. Also more kudos to noting the rear seat tube bolts. I have a madone and I covered them up as well. Insane manufacturers leave them exposed at these prices.
I’ve got this bike and the BB size makes the whole thing. Yes it’s Press fit, but it’s 87mm wide, so allows for a massive BB area and chain stays….everyone overlooks the fact you lose width and stiffness with threaded.
Probably the bolt position doesnt matter much, both ways have downsides. I have a bike with seat tube bolts on the top tube, with a wedge clamp.U cant use torque wrench on those or have to use very big angle, and usually it jumps out and soon would size the bolt. 2 lbs, one sells that bike brand, the other could order, admit, "we cant really do anything, use normal key, and then the last bit we try to wrap a torque wrench in cloth not to sratch the seattubes". The other advised me, "u can feel when it is start to grab it, without knowing the numbers". I go through one locking system every year, ironically it is 8 months to get one! I have the ergon/canyon split seatpost, i selected a bike with round seatpost, just to use that. I have to regulary take out the seatpost to clean it. I have to admit, i would prefer a place where i can reach the bolts easily, even if it is at the back of the frame. On this bike it is probably doesnt matter, those who buys them, probably wouldnt use it in rain dentist type. Those who race them, wouldnt care much, the bike will be replaced in a year or so anyway.
Glad someone else also noticed it. BMC release bike, unavailable for a year and now been outshone by Colnago. Imagine there are people being paid to make those decisions at BMC. Bunch of halfwits
Hey David, noticed you had a Karoo on the bike - do you use the converter to garmin clip, or did you buy a front out mount? (have you got links to where you got them as well) - am saving for a new aero bike but watching the video also just realised I'd need to upgrade the mounts for my bike computer as well!
I've been using the standard Garmin converter clip which has been fine for me so far, and there are a lot of Garmin mounts to choose from, especially like this BMC with a 2-bolt interface
The crosswind issue is the wheels. Put some 111 tyres on it and it’s fine. However it just isn’t as good a race bike as the dogma… I get you don’t like the dogma as an everyday bike, but it’s not meant for that. As a race bike it is epic
Having only one width of handlebars is a dealbreaker. Depending on the width of your shoulders, forcing your hands into a one-size-fits-all position is just going to make your elbows stick out and make you less aero, not more. Not to mention the discomfort of being squeezed into that position on long rides.
Hi David Very informative video as always. Great looking bike but way overpriced in my opinion and not even the best spec for your mega $$$ I do like the frame colour scheme thou 🚴♂️👍
Dave...£15k is a joke! Just buy a winspace t1500 and kit it out with decent wheels and tyres and equipment or an Elves Falath you will be just as quick!
finally! But... fifteen large and you get the worst color combo on sale in 2024. If Trek, Orbea, Factor and others can offer custom colorways for less money then BMC can too.
This video is a joke and Dave I usually really like what you post but I’m embarrassed for you on this one or have you got zero conscience??? BMC have always been a joke of a brand that crack a lot
Bmc's torque specs have since been revised. Regardless if you used a torque wrench or not, a lot of those cracked due to misspecification by bmc. Isn't that common knowledge now?
40 kph your power output is so low it makes riding fast effortless.. So from this I assume you can do a 25 mile TT at say 47kph? But at least it's fast to get up to speed (which means nothing too). Stupid prices of new bikes. I’m sticking with my rim brake and mechanical and buying a lotus exige s3. 4 bikes for the price of a mini super car 😂

Just sold the canyon aeroad to me
Patiently waiting for the “bought the wrong size , need to get rid of” posts on marketplace to get mines with the 2nd hand depreciation discount 😂 💪

Afraid not, unfortunately not been given the chance to ride one on home roads, only that first ride around Sea Otter
Keep up the good work, David. You show as all some bikes that we we never see in flesh.... Please take all comments with a pinch of salt!!
$15k… ouch…😑… that just reinforces that the fastest bike I’ve ever ridden is still my almost three year old SL7… 😂🍻
wich was more expensive back then

Glad someone else also noticed it. BMC release bike, unavailable for a year and now been outshone by Colnago. Imagine there are people being paid to make those decisions at BMC. Bunch of halfwits
Press fit is a better standard as long as its properly made and aligned

@@DaveCM Yeap, I mean a watt or 2 is white noise. I notice aero to non aero bike, but handling and weight you really notice
Agree. I run it with Enve 6.7s. Cross winds are sweet.
It does seem like a missed opportunity with such a wide fork but limited tire clearance on the rear.
The reason the bike is fast is probably largely because of those "narrow" tyres you think you don't like..
What sunglasses? Checked the video details. Nothing.
BMC is glorious but your CAAD 12 still wins - it is not $14k slower and doesn't need a second mortgage just to get it serviced.
What a ripper! Would love to own one. But...😅

I'd rather have two Canyon CFRs for the same price lol
I'd sell it, and get 3-4 bikes with the money.
So over priced!
It’s cool an all but that gorgeous custom made steel scarab trumps it for me.
At least it has a conventional seatpost and stem

15k bike which is essentially unsellable...Such a shame for tire clearance and those horrendous wheels.
David, which F1 team do you support?
Just buy the frameset for $6k and slap your group on it.
what is a fastest bike even means?
Lovely bike but that top tube looks way to fragile and game over if it snaps at high speed
It's only fast if it's jolly fast.🙃
such a sweet Bike!
No need to spend that kind of money.
that's because of the handlebar. you would ride faster on any bike with 36cm tops 😉

6-7k worth of parts, so the frame ia worth 8-9k, good one bmc😂
They took a beautiful bike and turned it into the ugliest pro bike. Even the Bianchi isn't that bad

Who cares about bikes like this one or the Colnago anyway? Your Fairlight Secan is so much more better looking and more fun
I didn’t used to watch top gear for the reasonably priced cars.
