The AT-OT is clearly a cargo walker of some sort that had been outfitted with seats for this particular occasion by the 327th, likely because they were lacking other dedicated troop transports like the RTT. The open top design and high number of legs is all the evidence needed to come to this conclusion. Having an open top means that you can transport oddly shaped or large items without having to dismantle them or have a hyper-specialized transport for them, and the 8 legs helps in displacing the weight of the walker and any heavy cargo it has. A comparable vehicle irl to the AT-OT would be the HEMTT (Heavy Expanded Mobility Tactical Truck), which also coincidentally has 8 wheels and resembles the body plan of an AT-OT very closely.
The AT-OT is probably a versatile walker, I can imagine it works very well as a flatbed technical. It can carry troops, cargo, or even have artillery pieces placed on its back in my mind.
2:35 My guess for the AT-OT open top design is: George Lucas was inspired by ww2 vehicles and this is basically a Higgins boat (Reall name is: Landing craft vehicle personal) on legs. They do the exact same function which is delivery troops from a bigger ship to a specific point. It's really a shame the AT-OT was only showed in EP03 and never in the Clown Wars series.
Definitely some Higgins boat inspiration, but I also imagine some inspiration from the German Half-track troop carriers, since they also had open rooves.
In universe the reason it has an open top design is because the AT-OT is meant as a behind the frontlines troop carrier, the AT-OT wasn’t meant for frontline combat thereby it’s not designed as one, its purpose is mainly a non combative one, just to deploy and move troops around.
@@aeddonmckaba9797There are quite a few open topped combat vehicles developed prior to, and during WW2, and even ones that were developed after the war, such as the Soviet BTR-152 and BTR-40. Most WW2 personnel carriers were open topped.
I'm wondering if you meant to say clown wars? 😂 You might have a theory there tho, lucas was heavily inspired by ww2 things, down to the tie fighter sound being from a German stuka iirc
There is an incredible minifig scale turbo tank out there that's motorized and sturdy. I don't know if that guy made instructions but it would fit in with the other brickvault MOCs.
7:57 My guess is that it could be used to transport larger items or mount different weapons inside the bay, say 2 big AA guns or carrying around a ton of AT-RTs, kinda like a pickup truck.
i think the lore is that for certain planets with jungles and similar fauna or terrain it's harder to deploy large vehicle in numbers so it's wiser to bring more troops in through dedicated carrier, and the open top is to both to make it easier to escape in case of great damages being dealt to the vehicle as well as having the troops provide support fire powers. The terrain and fauna itself would provide the cover against airstrike.
From what I’ve heard the open top was so the troops could quickly bail out if it was being attacked, the republic walkers aren’t impenetrable (the one that was explodes after one missile in ep2 so if it were covered and bombed they would have no chance, open top gives them a chance to get out the way
If hit by mines or explosives the AT-OT was designed to go down like a horse giving the troops inside cover rather than a sealed interior like that AT-TE which when hit went down like a flaming metal coffin
My thought process is that it’s a cargo hauler that is capable of carrying more troops into battle than a standard ATTE. I definitely don’t believe these are meant for combat as it has to sacrifice some armor and its main armaments but it seems to fit a purpose somewhere between an ATTE and Juggernaut. And yeah I do agree with other comments that its primary use was probably hauling cargo or mounting artillery/antiaircraft weapons.
Interestingly enough actual AT-AT predecessor isn’t AT-TE, but this obscure walker. They both has a neck joint with head-like cockpit, and both are dedicated high capacity troop carriers
Got this on pre-sale and collecting all the parts as we speak but it'll be a while before I'll be able to build it since I've got a few other of David's designs that Im planning to build first.
Another great model from BrickVault…. I’m still hoping someone does a minifig scale Ebon Hawk, I know it’s kind of obscure but it would be an awesome addition.
i would love to see a gozanti cruiser that is minifig scale and can attach tie fighters or attach itself to at-at's, would be soooo cool but so expensive too XD By the way great video !!!
I love the use of all those knockoff clones from Koruit, WM Blocks, and Xinh. It's nice to see because a large portion of the LSW community shuns those types of figures.
@@Cmmdre977 Most of the recent ones from companies like WM Blocks look absolutely amazing and work very well with official Lego parts. I'm saying this as someone who has a very large number of them.

This week's answer: What do I think is coming? Let me start by saying that Rlaarlo is a Chinese company that has proven they can produce very high-quality RCs, at very reasonable prices. Over the past year, they've released a 1/14 scale buggy that's equal to, if not better than, other currently-available 1/14 buggies. They've also released a 1/10 basher monster truck that's equal to, if not better than, other currently-available 1/10 basher monster trucks. Approximately a year ago, they released the first of two 1/10 speedrun cars that's definitely better than other currently-available 1/10 speedrun cars. And, finally, they are currently in the process of releasing a 1/6 scale crawler that's probably equal to, if not better than, a certain other 1/6 crawler. I think, for their next 'big' (figuratively, and literally) release, they are going to take on the Arrma Limitless & Hobao VTE2, and release their own take on a 1/7 speedrun car. Adding to that, knowing that their two 1/10 speedrun cars (AK-917 & AK-787) have bodies based on two real-world LeMans cars, I'd be willing to bet that their 1/7 car also has a LeMans body.
Yeah, I'd be interested to know how many do you actually manage to sell of these bankrupcy generators. It looks like it would cost 1/4 of my apartment.
I was looking for someone to say that, but do you know how big it would be in minifig scale? My guess would be 40 studs, but I am still trying to understand how scaling works

The Dropship you see in the video is actually not David‘s design, but a model from a new builder that we work with. It will be out very soon 👀

I love the Lego Star Wars Community. All we got is like 5 seconds worth of screentime, yet everyone wants to have an AT-OT for their own army.

Probably also the "Kangaroo" family of APCs from WW2. They were open-top troop transports made from converted tanks.
I think all that's left now is the Trident, and the turbo tank, which would probably be too big

obviously, because Felucia is a tropical environment and the ATOT offers nice airflow as compared to the cramped at te. can get stuffy in there
Finally! Waited so long for this. What a phenomenal model from David.
I've also waited so long for a gozanti cruiser in minifigure scale
Very nice model, Dave has raised the bar yet again, cant wait to build this one!
I believe this walker is open topped because it was meant to be a transport away from the frontlines. Great model though!
327th not 312th if I remember correctly

Obi Wan wants to know your location
Im suprised the republic dident make a front lines version with a roof and a larger mass driver cannon and shielding

It's open cause it's not made for combat. It's just a cargo used to bring more troops behind friendly lines.
