I don’t want any plants that I have to put in a cabinet or a cloche. I like looking at them and I want them to be decorative, not necessarily a display or collection.

Fiddle Leaf Fig....over rated in MY opinion. Yes, I have one and if I knew what it would be like I wouldn’t have bought it 😩. It’s finally growing and doing okay, but still. I would have put my $$ elsewhere.😊

I think our biggest mistake is getting plants with an expectation of what they should look like. I have 3 out of the 5 and they grow beautifully(IMO) in my home but definitely not like the ones on Instagram. In other words let's do research on these plants and environments and be realistic that they will not grow in our homes like they would in other homes and even less than their natural environment. Also don't buy a plant because it's trending. Make sure you want it. (:

For me it was the peperomia ruby cascade. I had two of those in short succession and they both shriveled up and died really quickly. I don't have time for plants that have a 'piss poor attitude,' as Nick Pileggi would say! :D

This is really the question I was asking when I questioned your thoughts on the importing trend. The trend makes you think it’s so easy because Instagram is flooded with the pics and just hitting the order button is easy. But we are set up for failure when you don’t realize without giving it practically a biosphere home it will not continue in its glory.

the string of turtles has been on my wishlist for so long but i'm definitely gonna be doing more research after this! i agree with a lot of other comments in that i like to have my plants around here and there in the open in my apartment, i would despise having to have a cloche or greenhouse and i am absolutely unwilling to invest in a humidifier or grow lights lol. i love my plants but i'm also super frugal, i've never spent more than 10 $ on a plant and refuse to spend any more than that on any extras that would be necessary for any one plant!

Agree Philo. Verruscosum does seem to attract those pesky spider mites! Game changer for me with this plant was putting it under a grow light .I don't use a moss pole just a long bamboo hoop which i attach it to- continually pushing out new leaves which are getting bigger closer to the light it goes. Also not near a humidifier and I have a hot air blow heating system here in the UK. I think because of the heating system spider mites are attracted. House humidity does not drop below 30% all year and gets up to about 55% .

I live in VT and Maine (at school) and my string of turtles has grown extremely well I just keep it hanging in the window and it is rarely above 50% humidity in my room (also I did this all winter as well) .... I do feel like the leaves fall off when I take it to the sink to water it or move it in the car and its stems get tangled but he’s constantly flowering! (Of course we all have our own experiences I can not keep most succulents alive and my favorite cactus turned in to liquify mush on the bottom for no reason ☹️). I love your videos btw! Sometimes plants are rude and just decide they want to die 😂

I'm very surprised you're having trouble with Peperomia prostrata. I have two of them, one that i bought in my old apartment, where there wasn't a lot of light, and it withered away. It's doing better now that it sits in a south facing window, and it's pushing out new growth, but it's still sparse. I love it though, because it's a fighter. The other one i bought in the new apartment, and so far it's only lost maybe one or two leaves that i knocked off, and it's growing like crazy in that same window the other one is in.

Also - Me looking over at my favorite plant, my SOT 👀 and knowing I’m picking up my first verru this weekend 👀👀 I def think you should keep trying with these plants! Sometimes we have bad experiences because we don’t have the right set up! I keep my turtles in my terrarium now but I never did before and she was fine over winter. I’d say for a lot of these the key to a nice plant is a really good, strong grow light!

Hey there, love your vids big time but want to make a remark. Philodendron PP, is a variegation that occurs in nature, not a cultivar as many think. The variegation is unstable, but can come back even after several speckled leaves. I frown a bit over the pruning for variegation i must admit, that's a step too far for me. In my setting, when the plant is in direct light, i also see the backside of the leaves and they have this amazing pink rim around them which you cant see from front side of the leaf. The erubescens is also the plant that was used in creating cultivars like red Congo and prince of orange. This made me have more respect for the plant. I also like its more bare growing pattern with long internodes, which gives it an architectural quality. But again, as you said in this vid and as the French say: Les gouts et les couleurs on ne discute pas. :) Keep making great vids ! Rafael, Brussels

  • @arthurtang951
    @arthurtang951 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

While I agree with some of these, like PPP being ugly af, some of the others that supposedly don't grow well for people is the result of wanting the plant to fit our living conditions, as opposed to providing it with conditions closest to its origin. It's like if someone says huskies are overrated dogs but they've never given them the opportunity to work/pull sleds/showcase their full potential. I think that's the flaw in the attitudes of the majority of plant hobbyists who start diving into more "collector" plants. They still hold the mentality of having plants as furniture rather than as a collection. There's nothing wrong with this attitude because not everyone wants a greenhouse inside their home, but don't expect these plants to flourish for you.

I just recently bought a HUGE beautiful pot of turtles. I'll make sure to put it on the shelf right over my humidifer. I finally pulled the trigger on a baby PPP that has a good amount of varigation. I got it for less than $100 so I *feel* like it was an ok purchase. I like the reverted form just fine so it's a win either way.

I think you got super lucky with your Calathea Zebrina. While I keep a house full of prayer plants of every vareity, stromanthe, marante and calathea...I did not have as much success with the Zebrina. I do think a lot comes down to the health of the plant when you receive/purchase it and if it's over watered or stressed for any reason, I don't care what plant it is...unless it's a montera or pothos, it's pry going to struggle. Unfortunately, it's a lot harder to get 2nd chances with really expensives plants but sometimes a second chance with a different plant from a different greenhouse or one you personally selected that didn't come in the mail, is all you need to change your mind and experience with that plant.

The turtles are my favorite becauseit's one of my favorite animals. I never had a problem, I always felt it was easy and thankfully mine is thriving. I agree with the pink princess, without all the pink I wouldn't take a second look. Though philodendrons are a favorite of mine in general. Love your videos.

I agree with you Becca, this is your opinion and yes those plants are over hyped. I like the String if Turtles but it's true they are hard to take care of. And yes , Melanochrysum was in my wishlist before but it was so expensive and hard to take care of so I just buy Micans.

I have to laugh because these are some of my favourite plants 😂😂😂 I have a Verrucosum and a Melano and they're both really easy care for me but I know people have problems with them. My Verrucosum is possibly my favourite plant although my Monsteras are up there 🤔I also have a string of turtles he's slow to grow for me but it kinda suits me to keep it small 😂 And I have a PPP arriving next week I've been back and forth about getting one but I've taken the plunge and have taken a risk on a Boobie cactus it's coming from Singapore so fingers crossed 🤞🤞🤞

Melanochrysum with big leaves that start pushing small ones are almost always top cuttings from mature plants that don’t have enough roots to support mature leaves. Cut the first small leaf off to propagate and let the mother plant root up, and try and get another node in the substrate too, if possible. I did this and immediately got much bigger leaves. Also misting the new leaves as they come in is super helpful for keeping them from breaking off. Melanochrysum weirdly got a reputation for being “easy” rare plants and cuttings are cheap enough that a lot of people get them while still relatively inexperienced and then struggle. Do your yourself a favor and spend the money and get a splendid. You will have none of these problems 😂.

I feel monsteras and fiddle leaf figs are overrated. They take up too much space and don't do very much. Great for an office space, but I can't use up my precious space for these large plants. I think that crown of thorns are pretty underrated. There are so many unique hybrids, but no one really collects them in America. Great for window culture, can last for generations and you can neglect the heck out of it.

Living in Southeast Asia here. It's humid all year round, and in my home, it averages around 70% humidity and even up to 80+ on rainy days... that means there's really no need for a humidifier for my plants but it's also uncomfortable most of the time

I agree with the birkin and many others..... i also think many of the “rare” plants are overrated and as well overpriced. Once the big box growers get their hands on hundreds to sell and propagate many of them lose value and the hype so I think people should just stick to what they like while being careful of the budget they spend on the plants because although u can say its an investment, its a living thing so it always has a risk of dying and you losing that thousand u spent ya know.......
