    Use 91 percent alcohol or denatured alcohol for hotter flame. Then use low viscosity oil on all moving parts. But no oil in piston tube or you will change compression. Then connect your tiny motor. Very nicely done.

      Thanks for the advice! We did make a few other minor tweaks to get it run successfully, see Thermoacoustic Engine 2.

    the location of the heat seems to be in a bad position for the standing wave, from my knowledge you need it roughly 1/3 the way in from the closed section

    FASCINATING! I see the problem with the small dynamo, though...perhaps a smaller pulley and remove 'half' of the magnets in the dynamo case to lower magnetic resistance - then, instead of the tiny motorized fan - just put an array of LED's - flashing and non-flashing...it would work - since LEDs need much less current than the fan motor...

      Thanks for the thoughtful comments Rodney! I actually did try different pulley sizes, and replaced the motor (generator) with a smaller unit with less rotational resistance. See the result in the second video, Thermoacoustic Engine 2. Cheers!

      Hello James! Yes, it was a cool little project. However, despite it's simplicity, we found out that it requires very specific tolerances in order to run!

    • @jamesyoung1507
      @jamesyoung1507 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Looks as though you figured it out. The old saying, if you were stuck on a deserted Island and could only have one thing, object, person, gotta say it would be you, because I know we wouldn't be there long. :)

      @flyinhawaiian5848  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hah! You're too kind James! I think tinkering around on the farm back in Los Alamos, and playing with airplanes, cars, and farm machinery, gives one a solid understanding of machines, and how they work! I know Brent learned a lot from this experience!

    dont convert the axial movement to rotary to generate energy. Use the axial directly, placing static coils into cilinder, and magnets on the piston. much less energy loss.

      Hello...There are many very detailed videos on TH-cam that can provide you with step by step instructions on how to build this type of engine. Our particular design was based on the general concept of a Stirling heat engine, and is far from perfect! The primary component used to build the engine is the graphite piston. It is marketed by the Airpot Corp. as a pneumatic actuator, and is available as a free sample product from their website. Other components include; flywheels fabricated from raw aluminum bar stock, bearings from my son's Widget spinner collection, test tubes from his school science lab, metal brackets from Lowes, tiny electric motor salvaged from an RC helicopter, and various plastic pulleys, steel rods, and brass tubing from my RC airplane parts bin, and our local hobby shop. Check out these other videos on YT . . . th-cam.com/video/P5bQhGw3Ev4/w-d-xo.html, th-cam.com/video/V9XgIo7RWDw/w-d-xo.html.

    Where's the 'acoustic' part of the machine?

    • @flyinhawaiian5848
      @flyinhawaiian5848  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hello Ajay...In simplest terms, if the tube were open at one end, you would hear a high frequency sound wave emanating from the glass tube, caused by the temperature differential created within the tube, as one end is heated. (See this excellent video: th-cam.com/video/abswNCqnMRQ/w-d-xo.html ) Simply put, a rhythmic "standing wave" is created, and harnessed to create work, when the open end of the tube is enclosed by a piston. Hope this simplified explanation helps.

    some late thoughts. this engine has a wobbly flywheel. you may realize that thermal isolation of cold and hot sides is the KEY to maximum performance, of a heat engine; especially, during during periods of more-continuous operation. compare a high-speed, alpha stirling, with exceptional thermal isolation. googletranslate

    Your machine is excellent but some have mechanical problems such as balancing

    • @flyinhawaiian5848
      @flyinhawaiian5848  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hello Metin...My son inadvertently drilled the center hole for the large flywheel slightly off center, so to compensate, we purposely drilled the small flywheel hole slightly off center as well, then oriented the mismatch 180 degrees from the large flywheel when we located it onto the shaft. The wheels were then balanced together (note the brass plugs on the large flywheel) after they were mounted on the shaft. The "wobble" effect is primarily visual, rather than dynamic. Thank you for your comment!
