Yes hype will hurt the game but it's on Steven mostly for the direction he is taking the game. I am skeptical the complexity of what he desires comes together for a good launch experience. I also don't see how the sweats won't just ruin it by abusing the systems around nodes, guild, and PvP. Steven seems to be stuck on ideas from a long gone online gaming time. Those ideas are gone because the market is way more competitive. Bad ideas don't get a pass just because it's online like they did years ago when being online was the main attraction
I think there’s been way too much revealed already. And there’s SO many small channels/streamers trying to cover every little detail. I’m constantly getting recommended videos of AoC development (with like 50-100 views). One of the best parts of gaming is adventuring into the unknown, but I feel like I’ve already seen most of the game. The only thing I haven’t done is the boring part, grinding out hundreds of hours to complete it. I predict it WILL find its place in the MMO community, but likely as a “smaller” niche of players compared to the top dogs like Wow, OSRS, and FFXIV.
I agree but sadly Steven spent last 3 years hyping up the alpha 2 and last 6 months of back pedaling wont undo the years of "damage". And while I think its completely fair for CCs to help temper those expectations, the wider hyped audience with unrealistic expectations arent those who watch ashes content on weekly basis so its down to Steven on August 16th (and hopefully big CC reactions lol) to bring everyone down and finally tell us WHAT TO EXPECT! :D
Honestly, almost 10 years to develop. What pressure beyond, Put Out a Playable Game. After that, the Pressure will be is it any good or will it be mired with bugs and goofball mechanics. He is planning expansions and content.....Right?
I expect it to be a full fledged game with 10 years of DLC that meets my every expectation. Having worked in IT for decades, people hear what they want to hear, and half of them are total idiots about software engineering. and don't get me started about hardware ignorance.
Expecting a full fledged game for an alpha release is basically the definition of over expectations. I wouldn’t be expect anything close to a full game, just a full set of features that aren’t particularly well balanced. Being in IT means little, help desk falls under IT at many places…
Am I the only one who thinks that many people are making too much of a big deal out of this? First of all, it's just a game, there's no need for all that drama. And secondly, it's a game in ALPHA state. You literally just have to wait for it to be officially released if you want a complete experience. Also, no one is forcing you to buy alpha/beta keys...
Alpha Two will suck. Any other expectation is ludicrous. Even your moderate expectations are too high. My advice (as a dedicated, well informed, member of a big established guild, follower of the game since 2017) to everyone that is not a core follower of the game -- meaning that you found it in the last two years and haven't exclusively focused on it at least since Alpha One -- Don't buy in, don't try to play, just watch your favorite streamer struggle with bugs, crashes, and exploits on Twitch. You'll enjoy that a lot more.
It may, but the biggest enemy of any MMO is the big streamers. I hope they separate them in their own servers and let the rest of the people play on normal servers. Streamers can manipulate people's reaction and action towards a product in a huge and many different ways.
The game just seems like it has too much content its team is trying to cram in for it to not fall over due to its own weight. That's why most games have small patches over time to release new content. On top of that paying said company to test their own project only to later have to pay a full price (Which costs less than an alpha key) just sounds like robbery and a scam to me. If the game doesn't end up being a scam I can only imagine its system requirements will be so drastically high to play it without constant crashes will not be within budget of your average PC user. That's fine and all when it comes to keeping an audience or playerbase, but history has shown multiple times that if the playerbase isn't there, the game will eventually fizzle out unless they go into a microtransaction system. Which is exactly what these guys already have while the game hasn't even been released yet. AoC used to look good, now it's just looking more and more like something that will never get released and has taken money from its supports for virtually no return. Everything about it to me is pointing toward it being a scam at its worst, and a product that will never get released due to some unforeseen issues at its best. Hopefully for those that are still closely following this game and even are financially supporting it, that won't happen.
oh so you're saying that people are going to have unrealistic expectations in the genre that has delivered the most dogshit to the gaming industry (outside of mobile gaming) for a decade now? i can't believe it. sorry but that's not something you can really take control of. the game will have to deliver as much as it can and then simply take what it gets as a player base. they cannot satisfy everyone and they won't either. but if JUST GOOD ENOUGH for us desperate mmo players to move on from whatever piss we're currently still stuck on then it will be enough to change the industry.
*There's also a disconnect between you and remembering 15M people played WoW, and are still out there waiting for a game worth making time to play. Ashes looks like that game to Millions of players.*
all the ppl hating on game are just boring ass WoW player who are stuck in their loophole for 15 years telling themselves their game is beetter than everything else i wonder why ppl rather play FF14 peetty much a solo game over WoW these days..
Well.
There is so much hype for a reason, and that reason is players are getting tired of the same stuff for the last 20 years.
