      I still haven't finished the other one yet. I really need to get to it, our oldest daughters feet are sticking beyond the end of her current bed. :( Our current priorities this summer has been landscaping at our new house.

    I have a bed to fix that is just like this bed, but mine is brass. The attachment on the headboard that secures the railing to it no longer is welded. Is there a way to look up the tubing and see how it is secured to the headboard? Is there a bolt within it that I might be able to secure welding might be difficult at this point for me. There is definitely something holding the piece that secures the side rail to the headboard besides the weld because it wiggles but is still held to the headboard.

    • @WeirdyBeardyWorkshop
      @WeirdyBeardyWorkshop  4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      That is a good question. Maybe try googling and see if you can find a blueprint for the design of your headboard. Otherwise you will have to do your best to investigate. It's hard to know without seeing it.

    Absolutely magnificent! Well done! You have inspired me to refinish my own iron and wood bed. It's not an antique. It's 40 years old and needs to be refinished. It will not look like your two works of art!

    I love the final outcome. I have an antique metal bed frame very similar to this, but it’s a bit ornate. I’m going to restore it for my granddaughter. But with it being an antique, the size of the frame is not what is normally found now days. How did you support the mattress? I’ve looked at bunkie boards online, but the size is all wrong. Did you use individual slats? How do they stay in place, as there is no lip on the frame for them to rest on? I’m
    at a loss as to how to support her mattress. Please offer any solutions. Thank you

    We have an identical bed, restored by my father. I’m wondering how you secured the slats on this bed. I can see in your video that your rails are oriented the same way as ours and they seem like they should be oriented the other way to keep the slats secure. I’m curious to know what you did.

    • @WeirdyBeardyWorkshop
      @WeirdyBeardyWorkshop  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      This is a great question and something I've been thinking about. To be honest I have experienced some big-time project burnout as we built a new house and I had all sort of stressful time-dependent house projects related to that. I have taken a little bit of a break from my projects due to that. Although I did completely restore one of the bed frames (as you've seen in this video), my wife doesn't want to set it up for my daughters until I have completed them both. I have finally (as of yesterday) started work on finishing the the cast iron bed frame(I am not videoing any of it, as it is pretty much the same process). Just today I am working on painting the rails. I have seen other videos where people have the rails where they are different than how I show them in the video, and it made me think I messed up and put them in upside down. However, according to the construction there is no other way to assemble them than how I have them in the video. So, sorry for the long winded answer, but this is how I am planning to fasten either slats, or plywood to use as a base. I am planning on drilling holes and using a carriage bolt through the top of the wood (just to the inside of the rail). Then I will use a fender washer (large outside diameter) that will go underneath and overlap the underside of the rail, and then put the nylock nut on to draw it all together. I hope you understand what I'm saying, if not I could draw something up for you and email you a picture to help clarify my idea. Let me know if this was helpful!

    Question should I worry about the LED paint going down the storm drain when I do my bed?

      According to this helpful article lead paint waste water should be properly disposed of: www.epa.gov/sites/production/files/documents/steps.pdf

      "Water used for cleanup should be filtered and dumped in a toilet if local
      rules allow. If not, collect it in a drum and take it with you. Never dump
      this water down a storm drain, or on the ground. Always dispose of waste
      water in accordance with federal, state and local regulations."

    Where are the casters? Did you put anything at the bottom of the hollow bed leg?

    • @WeirdyBeardyWorkshop
      @WeirdyBeardyWorkshop  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I still have the casters, however, I think we were missing one, and my wife didn't like them anyway, so we are planning on going without. My wife says she has a 'plan' for the bottom of the feet, so we shall see. I still haven't gotten around to finishing the second one. Never knew how much work building a new house tends to busy a person (even after it's built).

  • @dayseeswant571
    @dayseeswant571 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    How did you put the mattress on it? I have a similar bed (queen) and I don’t know how to do the mattress. I balanced a boxspring but it makes it very tall. I’m afraid it is going to slip off the frame and fall. Could I do ropes and no boxspring? How would I get the rope tight enough?

    • @WeirdyBeardyWorkshop
      @WeirdyBeardyWorkshop  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      This is going to be embarrassing since it's been so long since the video, but I haven't setup the bed yet. Since the video we have moved to a new house and been busy with house projects. I still have yet to finish the other bed frame. My wife insists I finish them both before we move either into the house. I did do a little bit of research today and found out that the antique bed frames typically don't fit modern standard mattress sizes. What we are planning on doing, however is using either wood slats or maybe even just a piece of plywood in the angle brackets. This should cover most of the distance of the height (of the angle brackets), and then forgo using a box spring and only using a mattress (Twin Size). The mattress will stick slightly beyond the cross brace pieces but will still be narrower than the headboard so it should still be okay. I hope this makes sense.

    I see you have one side piece on, when you paint, can I do that when painting, without it sticking??

    • @WeirdyBeardyWorkshop
      @WeirdyBeardyWorkshop  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I mainly did this as it was a quick way to get them to stand without rigging something up. I never had problem with them sticking but mainly because I didn't paint the joint until after the rest of the frame had dried. Then I removed the side piece, then painted the joint.

    I am about to attempt to re-do an old iron bed and am wondering what type of wire wheel you are using -- don't know anything about them - like do they come in different sizes/coarseness?

    • @WeirdyBeardyWorkshop
      @WeirdyBeardyWorkshop  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      They do come in a variety of sizes, but usually, if you get a variety pack they will have a few different sizes. Also, they don't really come in different coarsenesses but in metal types. Steel and brass. I went with the brass because it's a little softer and less likely to scratch your metal surface, and it still does a great job of getting the job done. Because it's softer it likely will wear out faster though.

      She just has a different mindset on what is good enough. When it comes to antiques she prefers a bit more patina than I would. It’s more so a difference in personal preference. She does appreciate the work I do. I should have maybe worded it a bit different. Thank you for your feedback.
