    Yes, I know I didn't show the pre-capture....I don't want that on all the time, so when I feel like using, I'll turn it on, or add it to a C-1 setting or something. Normally I just don't need or want that many extra images, but I'll definitely make a video on it soon.

    Ok, I’m just 12 seconds into this video and I have to say I have not watched a single YT video from any other photographer yet because I have been waiting for yours. You’re real and down to earth about your photography and your channel. No screaming, no screeching, no hyperbole. For me this is the best photography channel on YT and I like your style. Thanks for all of this and your passion for clear, honest communication! Now, back to the rest of the show 😊

    ours is setup nearly identical, nice! One thing Canon changed is if you want Spot Focus to work with the back button AF ON, in your custom settings button you have to go to the the AF On Setting, click info on the Metering and af start option and then put a checkmark on spot focus as well as a checkmark on whole area tracking servo "off"
    If you dont, the af button will still try to find and track a subject. Excited to see what you get with it!

    I set up mine very similar. I would like to see how you are going to set it up for video too.
    I did leave the Beep on but I turned the volume off on everything except the shutter but I turned that one to 1. That way I can hear it but it is very quiet.
    I played a little bit with the eye tracking to pick the focus point but I will need to practice that a lot before it will be helpful. In my early tests the camera does a very good job of finding the bird and eye.
    One of the first tests I did was shoot at high speed and do a fast pan of my picket fence. The R5 MKII kept the boards straight. That would not have happened with the R5 and certainly not the R7.

    Hello Brent. New to the channel and love the content. Question, which one do you prefer for taking pictures of stars and / or northern lights, s22 ultra or s24 ultra?
    Going on a trip in december and im currently using the s22 ultra but thinking to update to s24 ultra.

    it looks such an amazing camera to use and all the settings look awesome and love the photos aswell they are amazing great video, I am curious on why in the EVF you only have Exposure sim on and not exposure sim and apeature preview on? You can then see what you’re backgrounds look like without having to hold a button down etc you see apeature in live time but such a honest video and love the style congrats with the new camera man 🙏🙏🙏

    Perfect video for a quick set up guide. I am picking my R5II up in 1 hour. As a back button user, your menu location settings for AF and focus will help me find those menus easier. As a newer video user, I would be very interested in your future video setup. Awesome first nature images!

    Hi @Brenthall, I am new to your channel and have a R5II on order. I shoot with a R7 + 100-500 (mostly birds). How does the quality in crop mode compare to native APC 1.6 of the R7? Also please add advice on moving from APC to full frame for me. Thank you.

    • @BrentHall
      @BrentHall  หลายเดือนก่อน

      Well you're obviously going to lose resolution, but other than that, IMHO everything else about the R5II is definitely better than the R7. Especially the AF and high iso performance.
      My only advice would be to just stay aware that you'll lose the effective reach you're used to, so don't let it bum you out and enjoy the full frame goodness and all that the best canon camera out there has to offer.

    • @JacoDeVilliers
      @JacoDeVilliers หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@BrentHall Would it be safe to use a calculation: 45MB / 1.6 = 28MB vs R7 = 33MB? Meaning that it is effectively losing 5MB of resolution? Or is that not how it works? I have also ordered a 200-800 that will arrive with the R5 II, just because I was afraid of the reach that I am losing. I intend to sell some of the equipment after trying them out. I know glass (L) is king. What is your opinion on the 100-500 vs 200-800 in terms of bird photography?

    I for one am interested in video settings as I use my camera for B-roll. Thanks for this set-up video. The menus are a bit different from previous Canons and this is very helpful.
    I personally use the M-Fn button for crop mode as I can easily reach it with my index finger. Also, I use the AF-On button for eye AF and the * button for single-point. Otherwise, I'm copying your settings to start. Thanks!

    Just got mine yesterday and took it out in the backyard for some tests using a similar setup, just single back button focus. Then took it into the field and it did well with a belted kingfisher in flight. It nailed all but two frames, when the bird flew in front of trees, as it was kind of far and I was only zoomed to about 300mm. I don't even remember it losing focus in the EVF at 30fps. I just changed the stickiness settings to your suggestions, so we'll see how they work in the coming days!
    Overall I was very happy with the auto-focus and high ISO noise levels. I got the Kingfisher perched fairly close at ISO 10,000, and with minimal cropping and a lot of denoise, it came out great! I think the IBIS is a bit better with this camera and the 200-800 for video. Much less jumpy.
    One annoying thing that also happened with the Mark I is a slight delay coming out of sleep. It only seems to happen with my new OWC 1TB CFExpress 4.0. On the older camera it could take up to 5 seconds to wake up. The Mark 2 maybe two seconds max. Doesn't seem to happen with my 256GB Sony Tough CFExpress.
    Have you tried eye control? I tried it last night with the 35mm 1.8 indoors and then recalibrated today outdoors with the 200-800. It didn't track my eye accurately at all in either scenario.

    Great timing! Just got my R5II and now it's set up and ready - just need some birds! I knew of pre-capture, didn't want to always have 15 frames, but also didn't know that I could change the H+ setting. Just heard that the pre-capture frame number is half, so your pointing out that I can lower the H+ frame number makes that pre-capture number a little less onerous.
    Your setup video is wonderful, all useful material, to the point, nothing that's not needed. Thanks for being so timely!

    I’ve had R5M2 for little over a week. I saw that Jan Wagoneer set up his AF sensitivity in the way that you now did. I had tried that for birds and It did not work for me. Setting it to zero on both works better for me.

    The 1.6x crop factor does not actually extend the reach; it merely simulates it, akin to cropping the image in post-production and then enlarging it. It's important to note that this option crops a significant portion of the sensor's 45 megapixels, and enlarging the image can amplify noise, especially at high ISO settings.

    Why do you have to hold down the * button to track the bird in flight? Doesn’t it lock on it once you press that button and the camera finds the bird?

    • @BrentHall
      @BrentHall  2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      No, it doesn't stay locked on for stills. That's why you have to set it to AI servo, so that as long as you hold it down it will track and stay locked on.

    I am not sure why you switch the shutter button to meter only. If you keep the shutter button on AF/meter and set it to spot focus you can use the spot focus to initially acquire focus if you need to. Set your AF-ON button to eye tracking. Canon has it set up so that a customized back button overrides the shutter button and when you push the shutter button it will not attempt to refocus. Try it and set your image review to show active focus points only either in camera or through DPP. You will see that eye tracking overrides the spot focus. If you do it this way you have one less button to push with your thumb. Makes it easier to adust focus point using the joy stick or in my case, use my thumb to change EC.
    Not only did I test this myself on the R5, R6 and R7, but I talked to a Canon tech and he verified it.

    they screwed the on/off - mode switch thing so bad I literally cannot even fathom it. I switch from photo to video all the time in my work, being run and gun, doing multiple things at once, and If I had to keep bringing my thumb to the back of the camera to switch modes since apparently you cannot do it anymore with the m-fn button like on the ol R5mk1 - I'd actually shoot myself. It was so simple. Keep the on/off on the left side, and just put the mode switch either like on the R3 or where on/off/lock is now. Goddamnit canon

    It's strange that cannon released its new flagships and they are only comparable to the Z8 and Z9 that are considered outdated in technological terms. I would have thought they would have been way more advanced than the older Nikon cameras. It's so disappointing that I waited so long for cannon to release something that is only on par... really a bummer.
