Struggling to Find the Perfect Coloured Pencils for your Animal Portraits? | Materials Guide

  • In this video I walk through a finished portrait, explaining my use of colour, from the base layers to the final touches. Why I use certain pencils for the initial layers, and what colours complement each other to create beautiful bay horses with your coloured pencils.
    I use colour theory to select colours for shadows, and a range of different pencils - some are chosen because of their specific colour, some are chosen because they lay down on the paper in a certain way.
    Colours you may not have used together, or pencils you might not have tried, hopefully this video will give you a little more insight into how to combine different pencils to create realistic looking coloured pencil portraits.
    Materials used:
    Clairefontaine Pastelmat White
    Faber Castell Polychromos
    Caran D'Ache Pablos
    Caran D'Ache Luminance
    Derwent Studios
    Derwent Drawings

    Some great tips here - particularly regarding using Derwent light fast on top rather than a base layer which is what I would have done. I’m about to do some dog portraits so researching whether to use polychromos or Derwent lightfast or both

    The Derwent Studio Pencils have been discontinued since this video was posted. These colours are still available in Derwent Artists Range. Same pencil, just a round barrel but the same core.

  • @happyjac

    Hi Bonny. Lovely video full of fabulous information ! My preferred is also Derwent studio, FC Polychromos, and prismas and verithins for fine details. I tend to use HP smooth paper, and notice you using pastel mat on this drawing. Something I've not used, but will give it a try now. Do you use it as preferred? and do you use other papers? Best regards, Jacqui. Western Australia

    • @BonnySnowdonAcademy
      @BonnySnowdonAcademy  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Jacqui, thank you so much :) I love pastelmat - it really suits my techniques - very different to smooth paper in that you can get light over dark quite easily. I use Drafting film as well which I love :)

    • @happyjac
      @happyjac 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Bonny Snowdon Fine Art thanks for replying 😄 nice to hear back from you. I will certainly give both of those a go. I’ve always gone for smooth, to get the detail but oh my gosh it’s time consuming to build up all the layers. If I can get my hands on some pastel mat during lock down I will give it a try . Best regards , jacqui

  • @crystalzak

    lovely work. how hard is it to transition from pastels to colored pencils on pastel mat?

    • @BonnySnowdonAcademy
      @BonnySnowdonAcademy  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      crystalzak I think the challenge is the speed - with pastel coverage is almost immediate - coloured pencils takes a few layers.

    Thank you for sharing your experience, your videos and work is amazing. What is your opinion on Prismacolour? I have a couple of sets and found them, ok. Do you have any tips on using them for animals?

    • @BonnySnowdonAcademy
      @BonnySnowdonAcademy  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank you :) Prismacolor are a good pencils, they have a great range of colours, they are very soft which is why I don't use them as much. I would say very light pressure and build your layers up slowly and lightly :)
