    Thank you very much for your explanation ! I bought one a couple of days ago to make videocalls with my portable phone by using ethernet network instead of wifi (because of interferences with neighbours), I was crazy trying to install them but no sucess ... until I have watched your video. My conclusion, it's much better to run on wifi, get approached to the router as much as possible, and live happily !!!

    Hi, guys. Got the exactly same dongle in dead-cheap price. As reported, it's USB1.1 device which is supposedly identical to Davicom DM9601 USB Ethernet controller. Here is the list of abnormalities found so far.
    - VID/PID register contains 0x00, though chip revision register shows 0x01. Those should bring Davicom HW standard values or vendor assigned values in EEPROM.
    - I keep failing to manipulate PHY and read EEPROM content. The dongle works in auto negotiation mode all the time and provides no way to control 10/100 setting or duplexity.
    If it correctly referred itself as USB1.1 product, the seller is mostly an honest merchant. Correct USB2.0 dongle should have DM9621 and its siblings inside. Wiped VID/PID values, clipped PHY access and missing external EEPROM might be intentional act to hide its real identity.

    • @macchawala3993
      @macchawala3993 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ah, correction. VID/PID must be hard-etched. EEPROM, if ever, is to override various register contents and USB identification strings.

    I couldn't find the issue why my network drops to 5mbps and even my mobile tops to 70-80mbps on the same network via Wi-Fi. I was going to change my 10M long LAN cable if it wasn't for you. Thank you!

    Thank you so much! This is very helpful!!! I bought a similar one (same package says USB 2.0 and SIV also says uses USB 1.1). I bought it for under US$1.65. By the way, in the past, I also bought other USB to LAN devices like this for the same price US$1.65 but it actually works at USB 2.0 and really has speed of 25 Mbps which is the network I use. So it is not really the price but the mis-representation/mis-labelling of the packaging. Thank you! Thank you!

    • @andrefritzie

      @@freename The Chinese company from whom I imported 10 pieces of this is disputing that their product is really USB 2.0. Would you know of other evidence I can use aside from using SIV? As you pointed out, even Windows reports it as 100 Mbps but it really just connects at USB 1.1. Is SIV considered "authoritative"? I've seen that many other customers (on online shopping feedback) are also importing these fake products and discovering they only function at approximately 5 Mbps. But others don't know and get scammed. I import a lot of these adapters so I would like to help identify and get rid of these fake products. But I am not a computer network expert and so am not sure what other evidence I can use if people will not accept SIV's report. I'm a researcher but it seems there is very little I can find on this topic on the internet. Thank you!!!

    • @freename
      @freename  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@andrefritzie I would say that the limited speed at USB1.1 when transferring data is pretty good proof that it is only USB1.1! I've yet to see SIV be wrong about system inforamtion too.

    Any idea what's the difference between the KY-RD9700's Kontron DM9601 and the DM9620/DM9621?
    I've seen many USB to RJ45/Fast-Ethernet, but they use a different chipset (RTL8150/RTL8152b , AX88179/88772b, etc). I'm looking to find one based on the DM9620/DM9621 in order to compile/load this driver,
    qop_kernel/drivers/net/usb/dm9620
    and most importantly, call one the functions in that driver: 'dm_write_eeprom_word'
    BTW, any suggestion how compile/load a linux driver and call a function?

    I think you're quite experienced with technical stuff so your explanation is professional and credible. I have some questions and hope you, or your viewers, can answer: (1) My old laptop (Lenovo Z480) has a built in NIC, and if I decide to buy a good USB 3 Ethernet adapter (from a reputable seller - any recommendation?), I assume it will automatically replace the built-in one. Do I need to disable the one that comes with the laptop in order to use the new one? (2) I thought most USB Ethernet adapters these days are basically "plug and play". Do we still need to stall the "driver" to make it work? (3) I plan to buy one that comes with 3 extra USB 3.0 ports on it for connecting to other devices. Is it a good idea? Thanks for answering any (or all) of the questions above. Anyone welcome to reply and appreciate it. P.S. Just subscribed to your channel.

    • @freename
      @freename  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      1) It will be in addition to your built in network card.
      2) Unknown, if your machine is on the internet when you plug the new one in it will likely download the drivers from windows update.
      3) Yes, a friend has an Anker brand one of those and it works well.
