Initially, the auto start/stop was disengaged when you were testing it. Indicated by the orange "A" on the dash display. I turn my Forester's system off every time I drive.
Came here to say the same thing. Weird because it works the exact same way in the OBW which he has. It was clearly not on so of course it wouldn't work.
Good catch guys! I obviously didn’t proof view the clip I edited in 🙈 I had done several of those type of attempts and they all felt the same and none really showed the system working very well so I just picked a random one to add into the video. I must have picked the worst one if the system was turned off that time lol.. 😂🤷♂️
First he complains that it gets less MPG with the more powerful boxer, then later he complains about it not having an even more powerful engine like a Turbo. Either way, Subaru loses.
Yeah, just one of those people that likes to complain. The start stop can be controlled with pressure on the brake alone. Push hard it’ll shut off if the perimeters are met, the mileage is slightly lower because the gearing has been changed to tow more, along with the tranny cooler. This car wasn’t designed just for YOU. The glare on the screen. Just change the position of the car. The in lane app works great for me. It doesn’t bounce from side to side like you mention. I love my Subaru. I have now problems and I’ve had Range Rover, Porsches, Vw’ s.
Reduces heat reduction? Try not to use a double negative using the same word. The weather stripping increases heat build up is what I believe you were trying to say. And no, it doesn't have to. Plenty of other manufacturers have used weather stripping to keep the engine compartment cleaner while still providing an adequate cooling solution for the engine and components. He even listed one. Try taking your own advice.
@@shannonkirby7040 bought one last April a wilderness model and after 2500kms i have mixed feelings. i do like it but i was taken buy my desire to update my ride and had not researched it at all i just went to the dealership because my landlord had a Subaru with 300,000kms on it i actually tried to buy his but he would not sell it to me so i went to the dealership and fell in love with the geyser blue Crosstrec wilderness and ended up over paying because i was in love and kind of still am
Gotta say that “ruin” is an awful strong word given that the items you list are annoyances or low probability failures. Also, isn’t this a rehash of a video you did on the outback not too long ago? The content seems awful familiar, just sayin.
Ruin probably is a pretty strong word, you’re right. It’s similar to that Outback video from about half a year ago, as you’d expect since these vehicles are very similar. But a few of the issues are different and the emphasis I’m trying to place this time around and on this model is slightly different. Such as I’m no longer in the mindset that “CVT” is bad, but rather the CVT in my experience is actually pretty good at doing what it was designed to do, but it should not cost 10k to replace. Which 10k average isn’t what Google said but that’s what people in forums have been quoted by their dealer. And knowing that, I personally don’t plan to keep my OBW past its warranty before I move on to the next experience. Basically a lot of these concerns keep cycling around in comments and forums so I wanted to redo my original rushed Crosstrek Wilderness issues video and provide better Subaru distinctions that cause some potential buyers to pass them up. Every car and platform has its subtle pros and cons. Thanks for watching!
Agreed, although I semi agree with the CVT comment, I think people need to stop complaining about Subaru’s CVT. It’s probably one of the best in the market. Regardless of what people say of Subaru’s CVT, it doesn’t seems likely that Subaru’s going back to a regular automatic. They’ve been cemented and Subaru has been full steam ahead with the CVT development since the 2010’s.
@@AutomotiveAnonymous208i’m glad you made this video. i would have never watched your outback one, bc i dont want an outback. theyre too big for me & my 8 pound dog
@@LAAO369 Nothing wrong with complaining about the CVT and the reliability issues that have been reported. The replacement cost of $10K with labor is ridiculous for a small CUV.
I remember when I bought my Outback I did think it felt like a more grown up or mature system than my 2019 Crosstrek had for eyesight. But that systems likely improving all the time because many of the new ones I test drive now feel better than my 2 year old Outback.
I’ve got a 2015 Outback with 210,000 miles on the original cvt. All I’ve done is keep up with the scheduled maintenance, and it has been very reliable. It definitely won’t win any drag races, but the Outback has taken my family and I everywhere we’ve wanted to go with no troubles. I plan on replacing it with another Outback or the wilderness Crosstrek.
Thank you so much for sharing this! It’s great to hear such a good experience. I haven’t made this public yet but I drove a 1/4 million mile 2010 Outback (unsure of original CVT or not) but it was really clean and held up well!
I have this vehicle and love it. But I have to agree with your dislikes. I have them too. The gas mileage is my biggest complaint though. It does drive amazingly and is a lot of fun. I will add one more complaint. No heated steering wheel and they offer it in Canada.
I’m glad you’re enjoying it! I wouldn’t be surprised if that option comes to the U.S. down the road. The OBW first had a heated wheel in CA before it was offered here for 2024. 🙂
Just a tip on the Auto Start/Stop…. I have a 22 CT Limited and my salesperson actually told me this trick. It’s a pressure based system. So the harder the brake pedal is pushed the more likely it is to engage the system. So when at a stop all it takes is releasing a tiny amount of pressure on the pedal and it will not engage. At first it takes actual thought to remember to do this but I’ve had mine for 2 years now and I guess I have developed muscle memory for it and do it automatically now mine very rarely engages. And when it does I basically just have to adjust my foot on the pedal and the engine restarts. Just another option if someone doesn’t want the hassle of booping the kill button every time they get in the car. Another thing I learned is it’s not actually a US government regulation. It’s a regulation for other countries. So any vehicle platform sold in multiple countries will have the feature that way it saves the manufacturer spending money to set that feature based on which market it’s going to. Not all US sold vehicles have the auto start/stop.
Great insight and I appreciate you sharing! I hadn’t heard about the auto start/stop being sold in multiple markets influence. Something interesting and silly is with my OBW if I lightly hold the brake pedal it vibrates as it wants to move/lurch forward and rotate the wheels. I’m not sure if that’s the torque at idle and more aggressive final drive, but I’ve never had another car that does that.
@@AutomotiveAnonymous208 it could be the 4.11 final, I don’t get the shuttering in my limited at light brake pressure. So I wonder if it would act the same on the CTW since I believe it has the same final drive as the OBW. Love your videos and always look forward to them.
The Outback actually has a 4.44 final drive. You’re probably right about that being the reason. It’s almost like a very mild version of when I brake rev a powerful automatic car to launch, and the tires/front brakes don’t hold and it abruptly tries to move the car forward. Like an AWD hellcat or 6.2 Chevy on stock tires. Just the tiny baby version of that lol. Thanks, I really appreciate it! I have a lot of fun making them. 🙂
Really?? Which US manufacture does not include the auto Start/Stop in their line up?? Please, let me know because as far as I know all 2023-2024 models have this dumb things that don’t save you any money…because it wears out things faster, which causes you to pay for repairs or even buying another car. This whole start/stop tech is nothing but a scam
I own a CTW and I agree with all your points. My biggest gripe is the gas mileage. I now avoid the interstate on my commute and take the frontage road instead. It takes a few extra minutes but I now average 27mpg instead of 22mpg. That being said tho there are no other cars on the market that I can afford that meet my wants and needs like the CTW does. I still love the car and truthfully if I had to choose between the more aggressive power delivery that the final drive provides or the better mpg of the regular CT’s 2.5 I would still pick the wilderness! I’ve driven both and the regular CT feels lethargic in comparison.
That’s awesome! I don’t blame you for taking the highway. It’s so crazy how drastically different these do with MPG at highway vs. interstate speeds. I’m currently filming an MPG video in my OWB from 60mph-80mph and the results so far are shocking lol.
Hello, coming from me.. A serious subaru owner and enthusiast, I love the new crosstrek. Ive owned 2 wrx's and an sti.. put more than 350,000 miles on the 3 put together and now moved to my first crosstrek about 6 months ago. My family owns many subarus , from the outback to the forester and even a legacy. But im 40 now and went with the new crosstrek sport, and coming from even a heavily modded wrx i dont mind the power in this thing. Its enough to get it done. The other gripes you have i understand though. Poor gas mileage and the touchscreen is ...ehhh, as well as the auto shut off...uhgg its annoying, but there is a button to turn it off at least. Overall if your looking for a great value and a vehicle thats capable for snow and just every day driving, this is an amazing vehicle. I have no regrets moving away from the cars and into this. Would also say i dont miss the manual transmission, with how congested traffic is anymore it was just a leg cramp😂. Maybe its just me getting older but i dont mind the cvt.
Great insight, thank you for sharing your thoughts on this! I really enjoyed the 2019 Crosstrek I use to own, I just had mixed feelings about the Wilderness (especially at its price point 😅). Thanks for watching!!
I test drove the ctw and outback wilderness. I liked the Crosstrek wilderness much better. Bought one a few months ago and love it. No complaints and has milage has been better than my 2019 Forester I just gave my son.
Auto start /stop is not an issue with me. Start the car, touch the disable function on the screen and drive happy , at this point is muscle memory for me. Like I said not a problem I never use it.
@@kippywylie You can by a Bypass Device for around $30 that plugs into your fuse box that will permanently turn off the automatic engine start stop unless you turn it on again with the button or remove the device. Kinda nice so you don’t have to worry about pushing the button off every time you get in and start the car. Not sure if having the device voids any warranty’s or not though..
@AMF96 Yep, I got one and really like it since I easily installed it 4 months ago. Never think about A. S. S. anymore, and I even used ASS in LA traffic last month and it still works fine if I want it. Bad news is I paid $90
At 3:25 in the video when testing the auto start/stop the light for it on infotainment needs to be on for it to work. And it is obviously not working because it is turned off. And when it did work with but heat on it worked fine.
Good catch! When I entered in the example footage I inserted the wrong clips and didn’t catch it in time. It didn’t work well or consistently even when the system was turned on.
The archaic “new” screen is keeping us away. We own other Subarus and prefer the old 8” screen and HVAC knobs. The lack of a front cam is disappointing too.
It's important to mention that Subaru's CVT is in-house. Not the absolute garbage Jatco CVT used by Nissan and a surprising number of other brands. Still, it's a CVT. Best to get the CVT flushed every 30K miles so the CVT won't malfunction. Cheaper than buying a new CVT. Should help the vehicle last at least 100K miles. Though personally speaking, I'm glad there are still some options out there that use a traditional automatic trans.
As a Juke owner, this recommended exchange interval is a minimum, with turbo models recommended as often as 15k. And its best not to do a full flush, just drain and refill as many CVTs don't like going from old fluid to 100% new fluid. Yes this is experience with Nissan, but zero problems with a problem prone CVT and over 140000 miles using this method.
@@foodlover2830 I don't believe you. THAT many miles with the absolute garbage Jatco CVT transmission in your vehicle, and you've had 0 issues. Literally impossible. If you urinated down my back, then told me it was raining; I'd be more inclined to believe you then.
@@NGMonocrom No idiot I have 2 friends with older Monteros both with over 150 k with no issues . To say it's literally impossible especially since you don't have one or have had for the amount of time would be ignorant even if you engineered it which of course you did not . If you drive it and maintain correctly yes they can last 200k . You shouldn't make absolute statements about what you know very little about
I’ve had my 24 Crosstrek Wilderness for about three months now and I have only a couple small critiques… 1st, I would like to have a little more horsepower to get off the line quicker. 0 to 60 is certainly lagging and some more horsepower and/or a turbo option would be outstanding. Even with the initial lag, this car does have a decent amount of power to it for only 182 hp. And the only thing I think I would also change besides that is the gold colored accents on the roof rack and the bumpers… I really don’t like the color and I would love to have had the choice to have them just flat black. I bought the Alpine green color and it is an absolutely cool color but that gold accent just does not go well with it. I’m gonna go ahead and paint those at some point so that’s not that big of an issue.
I'm glad that the auto stop-start system takes a minute to shut off the engine. There are so many stop signs around my house that a brief stop at a stop sign without the engine shutting off is a good thing.
push the button to disable it for the drive and it won't come on. all vehicles with epa Auto stop have a bottom or setting to disable it for the current drive. unfortunately, you will have to do this again every time you get in the car and turn on the vehicle.
I have 2 late model Subaru’s, a 2021 Outback and a 2024 Forrester, both premium packages. I love both of them for their safety features and general drivability. That being said, I agree with all of the points that you made. I do warranty audits at all brands of dealerships, it’s my job. I was very surprised by the high cost of a Subaru CVT. That being said, I don’t see a lot of them compared to some other brands. Great video!
Have to agree about wanting a manual tx option with Subarus. But the sales numbers didn’t lie. There simply weren’t enough people buying manual tx cars. As a group, we only have ourselves to blame.
I would add, pairing manual transmission options with their 'weakest' engine also has something to do with being less appealing and contributed to low sales.
I mean... general public in America is pretty fng dumb though. There should still be a custom option for those that know what's good for them. But I digress.
Get the Forester Wilderness! It's got more room is just as capable offroad and actually comes with a front camera. Moreover, it doesn't have that God-awful cow's udder of an info-tainment system where everything must be tapped in. With a simple dial turn, I'm in x-mode. Really, test-drive the Forester Wilderness before you settle on the Crosstrek. Crosstrk
thanks for the advice. i had an 2003 forester & loved it, but i hardly used the backseats & cargo space, unless i was moving house or traveling to or from a DJ gig. i want a small car (i drive a prius now) and i don’t that foresters look like the average SUV now (i love the boxier 2tone styles). hopefully the issues you mention get sorted in a future crosstrek wilderness model
3:37 he complains about auto start stop not working while it clearly stats on the dash it is disabled. (The orange A with the arrow going around it and the off under neath it.) this symbol in most modern vehicles will only appear when the button has been pressed to disable start/stop for that drive. and will not appear when restarting the vehicle, the next time you get in it. I may be wrong, but it looks like auto start stop didn't work due to operator error.
You’re absolutely right! I actually filmed that scene like 5x because the auto start stop when turned on was not working either while in camera. A while later when I edited the video and threw in that clip I was careless and didn’t go through them to find a better example with the system on. I just wanted to be done with the auto start/stop system haha.
Our 24 premium with 2400 miles only gets 19.8 mpg avg during my wife’s 4.3 mile morning and afternoon trips while watching the grandchildren and dropping one off at school. On a 155 mile trip I can get near 30 mpg. Her 315 hp 2012 chevy camaro did similar mpg with near double the hp.
I don’t care about the gas mileage. I can careless! What I care about is reliability beyond 20years/200K miles. Paying 10K for a new cvt under 100K is not what I would call a reliability!! It’s funny…everybody is throwing the “magic” 100K miles around as if it was some kind of great accomplishment that engine made to 100K. How about making it 200K miles!!! What somebody wants to keep and use the same vehicle 20 years or longer??? The standards of cars longevity are being lowered and its presented to us as a normal thing. And the 2024 CT wilderness is not different.
I wish they'd just get rid of those stupid infotainment touch screen systems in every vehicle....stupid idea and very distracting, nevermind people playing on their phones, now they just put a tablet in your car to distract you instead.
@@strongersmarterandbetter Dude I was a tech admin...I understand it way too much, and it don't belong in a lot of places in vehicles and the tablet in the dash is one of them.
I think what you call the cd tray will now be for french fries, key fob, wallet, sunglasses, phone, or whatever, it still can have a use. For you it could have been for your go-pro.
When testing the Auto Stop start feature it appeared in your video that it was shut down so it was never going to stop the engine. I agree with you that Auto Stop Start is a waste of energy and money. 8 hours of Stop at traffic lights I have saved 3 gallons. How much energy used to make the system? How much does it cost the customer? And how much more is a battery for this car? It is a loose loose for the customer.
Good catch! I actually filmed that issue something like 5-7x because it wasn’t working consistently so I would turn the system on/off and drive around a bit in between trials. When it came to throwing that example into the edited video I didn’t proof watch it and get the right example in lol. 😅🤦♂️
Subaru "ruined" the Crosstrek by not offering a turbocharged powerplant option, or at least a powerplant with over 200hp, keeping "some" buttons on the infotainment system, a manual transmission option and lastly, ditch that gaudy, " gold-tooth prison mug" accent trim. A titanium, gunmetal, or carbon fiber look would be better, hell even continuing the chosen body color to carry over into these accent arras is better. I love Subaru and the Crosstrek but Subaru needs to breathe a more sporty life into it.
👍🏻👍🏻 I think it's the price. That car is 40k OTD. It is a good car but it needs to be great for someone paying $600 a month for 5 years. We have also come to expect more from Subaru than comparable priced choices. They always tried harder and gave you a little more in the mechanical aspects. With other OEM's playing the same game now I can see being a little disappointed what 40.000 dollars got me after the honeymoon.
I totally get that and specifically chose to leave the pricing issue at rest for this video. I can’t remember if you saw my original 7 issues video with the this new Wilderness about a week after I first drove it for my review video. My initial impressions were not great, especially because of the price. I kind of rushed that original video near the end of the day and after filming other stuff that day so I wanted to redo it with a more thought out version, that also wouldn’t hurt as many feelings of those who are happy with their purchase. It was the first Subaru trim level I drove and did not see the value in. But they look overall cool and stand out and for that reason I think my opinion has softened a bit.
@gregmgm06 Colorado. Dealerships have plenty wilderness models and are within 20 miles of each other. Get a quote from one and low ball the other. They are eager to sell
Thanks for the review. I sold my Forester Touring and our Ranger. We bought a slightly used 23 Tacoma TRD Off Road long bed . It has factory leather and sunroof. I had only 6K miles. This hopefully will be the last vehicle I’ll ever have to buy.
Absolutely! A lot of us owners have that as muscle memory to turn off immediately after starting the car. You can also purchase OBD2 plug in anti auto S/S devices, but those can be sketchy and in some cases cause problems.
I have a CTW love it. Hate auto start stop on any vehicle. Bad system that isn’t worth it in my opinion. But in your review be fair you test it 2-3 times and say yeah it’s not working. I can see on the screen the auto start stop button wasn’t turned on!!! Then when it’s turned on yes it operated as expected. Anyway first thing I do after starting vehicle is shut that off! Thx
I’m glad you’re enjoying it, and thanks for sharing your experiences with it! I had actually spent about 4-5 minutes recording footage of attempting to get it to work properly and with different HVAC and electronic use settings on/off. But when I finally edited and went through some of that previously filmed footage in as an example I just through in a few random bits of the total, as it all felt like the same results. Maybe the battery was a bit low from all the idle time I’m sure it had before I borrowed the car, but it did not work consistently. Which I also don’t think my OBW does either. 🤷♂️🙂
That’s a good observation! I would imagine it also has to detect enough charge in the battery since modern 12V systems can barely even accommodate all the electronics in modern cars.
I love the looks of these little buggers... but there are some points I can't get past. (CVT is 1 even though I know they're good. I know they have THE best awd system bar none but to me they lack the "quality" feel that you get with something like a CX-50. They are underpowered too.. no matter how much you argue that they're not.
@2:43 Thanks for mentioning that it has the Auto Start/Stop "feature". That "feature" is a great way to kill a starter. I dk where the switch is to turn it off in that Crosstrek, but I would def turn it off to save the starter from breaking down early.
With the 2024 the "switch" is a button at the bottom of the information screen.... But, you are forced to turn it of each and every time the ignition is turned on by default. There's no permanent off option
It's frustrating that people have been complaining about the "infotainment system" since it debuted in the 2020 Outback, and since then, Subaru has continued to release model after model using the same system. Gah! Also, 100% agree with the comment about the manual being the most fun Crosstrek you've driven. If they would provide a PROPER ENGINE WITH A MANUAL OPTION, it would probably bring the enthusiast crowd back. The CVT is shite. I don't care that it's "really good for a CVT"... still a CVT, still shite. But yeah, I'll be hanging on to my 6 speed 2015 Forester for as long as I can, as it seems like they'll not be making anything like it ever again. Kinda sad, actually.
I bet that’s a really fun Forester, is it an XT? I do videos like this on occasion to hopefully help anyone interested in watching but also to raise awareness if anyone higher up the chain in corporate has the opportunity to see what owners dislike about their cars.
@@AutomotiveAnonymous208 Sadly, no. The SJ Forester XT only came with the CVT, so I was forced to choose, and I chose the 6 speed. Interesting side note, I recently stopped by a local Subi dealership to pick up some parts, and there was a '24 Foz Wilderness in the showroom. I asked a group of sales guys if they would ever offer it in a manual, and they, predictably, said no, but they said that I'm not the first person to ask that, and they've been feeding that up their chain, but that no one really seems to care. =(
Agreed on the infotainment....it needs some future refinement. WRT manual trans, only WRX / BRZ are popular with manuals. Other models did not sell well.
I have a ‘24 Limited. My gripes: 1) could use some more power, 2) heated steering wheel and heated side view mirrors, 3) front camera, and 4) power lift gate. Other than that, I am loving it as my daily driver.
Not having a manual transmission option for the Wilderness Crosstrek is a huge disappointment. I have a 2021 MT Crosstrek and love it. Was hoping the Wilderness would have had one too. Too bad. I'll never drive a CVT.
I hear you. I actually just drove a 2014 STI Wagon (6 speed) in WR Blue, which that STI was the last year of it technically being an Impreza, similar to how the Crosstrek is a lifted Impreza. I wish they would bring that back and lift it to be the Crosstrek Wilderness lol. 😍
All relevant issues. I spoke to a woman recently who had all the Crosstrek (XV in Australia) releases and upgrades (4 vehicles over 8 years) and was disappointed with the 2024 version. The three main issues were - it doesn't feel as "planted" on the road (more floaty), the seats are not comfortable, and the large touch screen sucks. She thought the 2021 version was the best version so far, and the best car she had owned. I have a 2021 XV and was just looking at what turned out to be her latest Crosstrek in a car park when she approached me and started canning it. I can't comment as I have not driven the latest version, only sat in one in the showroom. Interesting comments from her.
Just purchased a 2024 Outback Limited 3 weeks ago, and I've put 3 long highway drives on it. My observation is that the Lane Centering is so awful it should never be in any car, but I'm finding the Lane Keep Assist to be beneficial. Instead of the aggressive irritating way Centering grabs the wheel Lane Keep Assist gently nudges the wheel just as a warning light reminds you. So far I'm really liking my Outback, but I would agree with your thoughts on the infotainment system. I'm much more distracted now that my 2014 Outback, and it's irritating just how many "taps" are required just to drive a mile for a quart of milk. Oh.... I run Android Auto and yesterday I tried the Subaru map.... Just horrible.
Well you won't find one with a MT...those days are long gone in family cruisers...even in HD trucks the MT isn't even an option anymore, where an MT should really be.
Haha good catch! Honestly, I had filmed that clip like 6+ times and it wasn’t being consistent between clips so when I got around to editing it I just through a random clip or two into the video. I shouldn’t have been that careless and rewatched each one. It just was frustrating that the system wasn’t working consistently due to whatever logic the computer was telling the vehicle was the best thing to function as at that moment. 🤷♂️🤦♂️🤪
I currently own a 2001 Impreza with 206k miles on it. I'm looking to get a new vehicle and am looking at the Crosstrek Wilderness. What are other goid vehicles with the same capability in that price range? I am also concerned about the cvt. How do you feel about the Mazda?
I haven’t driven all the competition, but I know there’s not of other “off road” CUVs. I love Mazdas! I have a 23 Miata. But I’ve driven a lot of CX-5, 30s, 50s, and 90s and think they’re a really good value.
Your video has been helpful. I really like the Crosstrek, both the Wilderness and other trims. But I have to say no to this car, mostly because of the fuel economy. Since I do a lot of city driving I want better than 25 mpg. Reading the Subaru forums many owners report less fuel economy than what Subaru says. I don't know how the start/stop feature will affect long term engine life. I can turn it off but then the mpg will decrease. The vertical info screen also gets complaints. I'm going to hold back on buying a Subaru for now, and see what 2026 brings.
I don’t blame you. The only reason my first Subaru was a CVT over manual was back in 2019 the manuals didn’t have eyesight, now the WRX does have both. I wonder how many more manual 2nd gen’s they would have sold if they figured out the software earlier.
@@AutomotiveAnonymous208 What is eyesight? My husband and I just love driving stick. His commute at a new job then would take him few hundred miles of northern Ontario and Superior shores so we wanted something with more traction. We wanted a Crosstrek, had one manual temporarily and loved it but we couldn't get one so we ended up with a Tacoma.
Eyesight is the name of the 2-3 camera system Subarus have at the top of their windshield for all the adaptive cruise and lane keep assist type features. I totally get that. I actually had a manual 2017 Tacoma for 2 years and over 60k miles before I switched to Subaru starting with that 19 Crosstrek.
@@AutomotiveAnonymous208 financially the (base) Crosstrek would have been better for us. It was a basic 2019 I temporarily had and it was great. The other models have too much useless tech that can throw a big wrench if something goes awry. While our Taco is great we still get annoyed with some of the tech. We are not ludites but just like simpler stuff.
100% agree. I was all excited when they revealed the Wilderness edition Crosstrek then completely disappointed when Subaru went and ditched MT on just about all their vehicles. I have a 2021 MT Crosstrek and love it. I have basically turned it into a Wilderness with more aggressive tires, lift and suspension upgrades, etc. I'll never drive a CVT! I don't need new tech like Eyesight...I just want a MT lol
People are always going to complain about something. I've driven a Crosstrek Wilderness for 11 months, well over 20,000 miles. The Crosstrek Wilderness is the best off-roader crossover on the market, beats the RAV4 TRD by a lot. It has a CVT cooler and the Toyota's CVT overheats off-road when put through the same level of stress as the Subaru. I get mid 30's for MPG on the highway at 60 to 65 MPH. Mind you this thing has the differentials geared so it tows 3500 pounds. Backup camera complaints?!? Dude, the thing is for you to backup, not watch your favorite movie. If that's not good enough for you, use your mirrors as you have for most of your life! And lastly, I've driven Acuras, GMCs, and Toyotas and none of their lane keeping and adaptive cruise control systems work better than a Subaru. No the Crosstrek Wilderness is not for your average customer. But it IS the best bang for your buck. As is a y Crosstrek trim in this category. Get one, you will love it!!!
That’s a tough question. I don’t mean to sound negative or anything but every vehicle has its set of pros and cons. And if I knew other platforms as well as the Subarus I’d find a similar but individualized list of its own. But after driving a few hundred different vehicles I overall have come to the conclusion of being somewhat informed about what you’re driving, but not so overly focused on the concerns that you don’t trust the vehicle. Some ignorance is bliss. And since no vehicle is perfect, drive what you enjoy and what makes you feel good or that your money equals the value that the vehicle gives you. 🙂
@@AutomotiveAnonymous208 Oh, agreed. I live in in the intermountain west, which is Subie central, and for a reason- they aren't perfect (and the lack of a manual is sad), but they fill a niche no other manufacturer does- reliable AWD (some roads here require it in winter, and yes they check), lower price point and better gas mileage than other off-road capable vehicles, decent safety features, and reasonable highway ride. It's just hard dropping 30k plus on anything less than perfection, with no full spare! Thanks for the insight. I can't find a reasonable Crosstrek competitor in North America for my needs, if for no other reason than the crappy clearance (looking at you, Hyundai and Mazda). Thanks for the reply.
Love my CTW 11.6 “ infotainment screen ! Just came home from a 2000 mile road trip and loved using both Apple Maps and Google maps for voice activated navigation that had awesome resolution and could be used in satellite mode to see the surrounding landscape features as opposed to a cartoon screen. Seamless and easy to use. Also the screen orientation was perfect when using it for navigation. Also easy to black out if desired. Most people that I hear complaints from have not used and operated the system enough to understand all the cool features. Never would purchase a car manufacturers Navi. They are overpriced and become outdated fast. My Navi updates via a new phone/software update seamlessly. The lane centering feature is not perfect but performed very well and much better than the older version in my past 2021 CW. The worst feeling is when passing other vehicles that were swaying towards my lane and I preferred to disengage my lane centering to move further away from them. I did not want a turbocharged engine as it brings more maintenance and cost to maintain. The CTW is adequate especially with the 4:11 gear ratio. I agree with poorer gas mileage as compared to my 2021 with the same engine. But as noted the gear ratio, added lift and tires contribute to this fact. I still have mixed feelings about the gold/ bling and cladding. Have thoughts about blocking out the bling look. Can’t understand why I didn’t get a front camera and agree the resolution and image size on the rear camera is poor. Loved the wireless phone charging and wireless apple car play connection via Bluetooth. Also found it easy to toggle between both my phone and my wife’s phone. Connectivity was fast and efficient upon starting the vehicle. I love the comfort of the seats even after this super long trip. Super glad I purchased a CTW even though it is not perfect. However what vehicle is ?
I agree with the turbo comment. Having experience with turbo motors and CVTs, they really aren't a good pairing. CVTs, no matter how good, don't play well with higher torque. The Nissan Juke Nismo RS is a great example. Sure it's a crappy CVT to start, but Nissan tuned the car to keep torque lower vs the manual models because they know the inherent limitations of CVTs. The more torque you throw at them, the faster they wear out and the shorter they tend to last. This is largely due to lack of educating customers on the ideal drain/fill intervals for peak operation. For triple the cost of a standard auto, this is no bueno.
You want some cheese with that whine? LOL My Crosstrek Wilderness is running perfect and you are not going to ruin my buzz. BTW this is my 3rd one and I never had any problem with any of them.
How many I hate crosstrek Wilderness videos do you make? Do you have anything good to say about this car or is it the bane of your existence? Personally, I love it!
Lol, this was actually the second and probably last one. I wasn’t very impressed with the first one I made. It was at the end of a long day, the weather was extra windy so I was talking a bit loud, and it wasn’t as thought out or presented as well as I would have liked. If you watch my other videos I hope it’s evident that I love Subarus in general. But for some reason the Crosstrek Wilderness rubs me the wrong way, lol. It’s still a great option and I don’t mean to speak poorly about your ride!
Just purchased mine about 3 weeks ago. It's my 4th Subaru and I love it. I'm averaging 25 MPG (mostly city driving). I agree 100%, if they offered this with the turbo it would almost be perfect. It needs a full size spare, but I heard they went without it because they would have had to go with a smaller gas tank. As it is, the range is about 370 miles, which is not great for a vehicle this size with a 4 cylinder engine. The HK radio is more like a stock stereo and the head unit is terrible. Otherwise, it's a great vehicle.
Before one buys a Subaru check out the outstanding class action suites .. I didn't know bout this on my 2021 Crosstrek and I finally had to get rid of mine or loose my insurance. In 23000 miles I had 5 windshields .. and the 5th one already had a repair. The Eyesite system almost got me killed twice. I filed with Subaru about these incidents and never heard a word. I had completely gone thru my Crosstrek .. Bilstein suspension, lifted 2", BFG KO2's. So I did a lot of off roading with the Trek but all those minor things became 'big' things. Traded it on a 2022 Toyota Tacoma TRD Off Road and in the last 13K miles I haven't lost a single windshield. I was also dissapointed with the fact that you can't flat tow a CVT transmission .. at least not a Subaru.
Thr reasons i when with a Bronco Sport over the Crosstrek were that the Subie had no navigation, poor headroom with the moonroof and the actual cost (the dealer would not give me anything but redbook on my Wrangler tradein), I remain skeptical on the CVT. My Bronco Sport is far more roomy, has more power, approch and departure angles, similar ground clearance and better fuel economy.
My one gripe is figuring out the navigation and why my phone won't work. It worked when I first got my car now it doesn't work on my Subaru. I blaming my phone. Its old and need an upgrade.
It might also be the car software that could use an update! We’ve just been told that our 2025 Forester will have an update coming out this week that helps with the CarPlay issue. 🤷♂️😅
LED headlights are unusable in heavy wet snow conditions. The headlights and fog lights are not hot enough to repel/melt snow which leads to snow caking up. I suggest spraying the lights with a spray wax or deicer.
I agree with this! Drove it in a blizzard last winter. Couldn't see the road because of these hideous lights. Ended up buried up to the doors. Does anyone make a car without these crap lights? My Forester Wilderness is worse than the Crosstrek!
The lane keep assist is very dangerous when getting out of a highway. I have a 2021 Crosstrek Sport. Couple of time when doing an exit this feature try to get me back to the lane and couple of time it got me in stress! I love my Crosstrek and will keep it for a long time but, yes the auto stop and the lane keep assist are super annoying.
Was it Lane Keep Assist? Or Lane Centering which is just horrible. In my first three weeks with a 2024 Outback I've been using Assist without a problem... But I hate Lane Centering
Maybe it is smarter to get the Onyx model with the 2.5, but with less offroad capable tires, no sunroof and with the crappy stereo. Then you get the 33mpg, save some money and the AWD is capable enough. Buy some better speakers and a sub, buy a 2nd set of wheels for offroading or winter, and some skid plates, tow points - that pushes the total cost towards Wilderness but you retain better mpg. In 15 years when the CVT blows up and mechanically totals the car, then find a used WRX engine w manual and shoehorn it into the Crosstrek.
I’ve not driven the CC Hybrid yet, but I would assume the Crosstrek is definitely more off road capable. But toyota Hybrids in general are awesome for efficiency and reliability, and are tuned really well. But it likely doesn’t have a very competent AWD system like other hybrid Toyotas, so be aware of that if it matters to you or if you are depending on that. 🤷♂️🙂
Technically you pay 💰 over $ 10 thousand more for only 33 horsepower and annoying ℹ️ infosystem and assembly in USA 🇺🇸/ compared with the base model assembly in Japan 🇯🇵 I prefer to suck a less horsepower car 🚗 knowing will last more than the wilderness made in 🇺🇸
Back in auto tech I learned that starting an engine (especially when cold) is the hardest part of using it. That paired with AS/S technology not being a long standing technology that has years of proven results of it in fact being reliable with over built starter motors has me slightly questioning ‘if’ it will be reliable or leave you stranded in 10 years. But the main issue is Subarus don’t do AS/S well, other systems/platforms are more developed.
I just recently got a 2024 Forester Wilderness coming from a Manual 2021 Impreza Sport that got totaled I really dislike the Start/Stop feature and wish I could permanently turn it off... Also dislike the lane keep assist which I have turned off as well. To be fair, I have a co-worker with a 2021 or so Toyota 4Runner with lane keep assist which he also doesn't like and keeps turned off.
I love the ride and handling. Smooth riding vehicle and one that I can afford in comparison to say a 2024 full size pickup truck which is almost six figures absolutely insane. I took my cross trek for a ride and loved it so I was sold. Great climate control. I guess one other gripe but not an issue is I wish the wipers had a more intermediate setting. There is slow moderate and really fast. Like I said I need to play with the controls more to figure out the function. Sorry one more gripe is this is a 36000 dollar vehicle why doesn't this model have an automatic trunk open and close but not a major gripe. Sometimes those automatic trunk open and close can be too slow and not worthy on a vehicle unless your hands are full. My gripes are minor but an incredible car and not a bad buy for something brand new.
I love the Crosstrek look but not the Price. Especially for the 2.5ltr mdl. If it had a Turbo? Maybe but, the infotainment center needs updated. Subaru has perfected the CVT. I'm looking to Trade my 09' Ford Escape XLT w/ a CVT Tranny in for a Crosstrek but I'll wait for the 2025 models. I definitely cannot do the 2.0 engine size. Most reviews I've seen shows over 30mpg highway.
I own a 2015 Forester XT Touring. I had a CTW for a week, while the XT was getting service. I was underwhelmed. It's a good looking car, the CTW, but I just can't see 35 grand,or more for bad gas mileage, and a CVT, which is a pain in the ass. Subaru has kind of let me down with the hopes I had for the CTW. It's a shame.
"CVT's are bad even though mine hasn't had any issues" Dude Subaru has been using CVT's for over a decade now and they last 200k+ miles if you keep up with the maintenance. CVT's got a bad rap after Nissan slapped the shittiest one they could scrape together into a maxima and it fell apart.
AWD is the #1 on these. The rest seems the going rate for new cars, underpowered, cvt, ugly infotainment screen, and bare bones interiors. Reliability wise I think if you gently break this car in for the first 20k miles it helps with future engine issues or repairs. Steady driving and allowing the car to pace itself and settle in......Redlining will surely make all the components work harder and you will be in the shop waiting for a mechanic to give you the bad news.
IMO this is the most capable vehicle in it's class and even in the class above (this is better than a Rav4). HOWEVER...very scared of engine/transmission failure. If it can't last 200k it's not worth it.
I just got one in white color also and I have nothing bad to say about it. I did 4k kilometers in a week and it feels like a cross Atlantic first class ticket. This car is a beast!! Highly recommend it for anyone looking for a legit offroad comfortable ride
Auto START/STOP needs to be OUTLAWED!!! PERIOD.. It's just STUPID.. just excessive wear and tear and once it gets some miles on it-- it will end up USING more gas to restart than if it had kept running the 30 seconds it needs to stop.
@@Soul2burn The Govt. ordered those to "save fueL"-- and never bothered to test- but it's proven NOT to save fuel at all- and it wears the engine out faster.. and eventually will FAIL- right in the middle of traffic.!!
Sorry but seems really out of touch with car features 29 mpg is great, the infotainment center is a huge plus on this car not a negative, auto stop/start easily turned off its a non issue, backup camera is half the screen for formatting purposes lol hes complaining about luxory features? that most cars dont have?
I just test drove one a couple miles, and a few of the issues you mentioned were glaring omissions in that short time. 1) the battery is anemic, 2) the power is anemic, 3) no front facing or wheel view camera. On the positive side, 1) the Harmon Kardon sound system was exceptional, and 2) CarPlay worked fine which might be useful when phones have actual GPS. 3) I am 6’-5” and there was plenty of room for my tall frame.
My CTW is the best car I’ve ever had! I enjoy driving it so much better than my previous Jeep Wrangler or Rav 4, and since I often go off road to remote camping/hiking areas in the PNW it’s great! Your critic seems to be hyperbole and misguided.
@@AutomotiveAnonymous208 It's all good! The system does fail to turn off when it should, so I have experienced it as well. 👍🏼
I turn mine off also, it’s not a smooth restart when it turns back on and I have to believe it leads to early starter wear.
The lack of manual transmission ruined it for us
never had any of the issue its mention here, have a Crosstreck for two years and it works perfect.
That weather stripping reduces heat reduction. Let the engineers do the thinking bud
That’s a fair point!
24 wilderness crosstrek. I have no gripes. Probably the best car I ever owned.
That’s awesome!!
Same here, I'm very happy with mine.
Just bought one and love it
@@shannonkirby7040 bought one last April a wilderness model and after 2500kms i have mixed feelings. i do like it but i was taken buy my desire to update my ride and had not researched it at all i just went to the dealership because my landlord had a Subaru with 300,000kms on it i actually tried to buy his but he would not sell it to me so i went to the dealership and fell in love with the geyser blue Crosstrec wilderness and ended up over paying because i was in love and kind of still am
I agree about the Lane Keep Assist or Lane Centering, it is very aggressive and sometimes annoying. I have crosstrek 2023
I remember when I bought my Outback I did think it felt like a more grown up or mature system than my 2019 Crosstrek had for eyesight. But that systems likely improving all the time because many of the new ones I test drive now feel better than my 2 year old Outback.
I agree on this. Tried to rip the wheel out of your hands
What mileage did you change the CVT fluid? Thanks in advance
Mine rarely shuts off when I come to a stop, maybe because I feather the brakes. Just a habit.
That’s awesome, I’m glad you’re enjoying it so much!
Auto start /stop is not an issue with me. Start the car, touch the disable function on the screen and drive happy , at this point is muscle memory for me.
Like I said not a problem I never use it.
I'm a long time Toyota ttruck owner and I'm in the process of looking for my perfect crosstrek
My Outback is 3 weeks old.... Guess I'll build this muscle memory. Kinda like the mid 80s when I learned to use a seat belt automatically
I totally get that! Right now the 2024 Forester and BRZ are the only models left like that. It’s a shame. 😢
Not all of us DRAG RACE or tow a Winnabago
I have a Nissan Roque 2013 with CVT and it has never once turn of on me going into off-roading. Also, i have 140 thousand miles. Never had problems
@@foodlover2830
I don't believe you.
You shouldn't make absolute statements about what you know very little about
I would buy the Crosstrek Wilderness in a second if Subaru would offer a turbo engine and a standard automatic transmission.
I think I saw where you can turn auto stop and start off in the infotainment system.
Oh, that’s a good point!
push the button to disable it for the drive and it won't come on. all vehicles with epa Auto stop have a bottom or setting to disable it for the current drive. unfortunately, you will have to do this again every time you get in the car and turn on the vehicle.
@@DownInTheDesert drives me nuts, apparently on the older models they had a physical switch that could be bypassed
I appreciate you sharing your insight! Enjoy your Subarus. 🙂
Have to agree about wanting a manual tx option with Subarus. But the sales numbers didn’t lie. There simply weren’t enough people buying manual tx cars. As a group, we only have ourselves to blame.
Very true. 😞
I would add, pairing manual transmission options with their 'weakest' engine also has something to do with being less appealing and contributed to low sales.
Yeah, that’s a great point lol. 😂
I mean... general public in America is pretty fng dumb though.
Just bought a 2024 Crosstrek and I love it. Its my 4 th Subaru.
I bet that 3.6 liter Camaro is a lot of fun! 🤩
What is a Tezla?
It’s a Tesla and a price of junk.
@@lennyupstateny1850 wth is a price of junk?
Thats how Elon pronounces it.
I wish they'd just get rid of those stupid infotainment touch screen systems in every vehicle....stupid idea and very distracting, nevermind people playing on their phones, now they just put a tablet in your car to distract you instead.
yup i prefer previous gen infotainment system
I agree I like being able to adjust knobs without having to look once I learned where they were.
another boomer that doesn't understand technology well
@@strongersmarterandbetter Dude I was a tech admin...I understand it way too much, and it don't belong in a lot of places in vehicles and the tablet in the dash is one of them.
@@wildbill23c The tablets are the best thing about modern cars and its a lot more useful as a passenger
I think what you call the cd tray will now be for french fries, key fob, wallet, sunglasses, phone, or whatever, it still can have a use. For you it could have been for your go-pro.
For sure! I’d rather have more storage than less, but it obviously wasn’t intentionally redesigned on this newer generation lol.
I just got a 2024 wilderness in alpine green. It has the upgraded stereo and moonroof. It had 5 miles on it and I paid 33 OTD.
@@brandocommando6593 Wondering where you live. Im in So Cal and it's 40-41 OTD.
@gregmgm06 Colorado. Dealerships have plenty wilderness models and are within 20 miles of each other. Get a quote from one and low ball the other. They are eager to sell
I love this car and I have the exact same car and in alpine green also (which is an extra cost option) for $32,800 OTD.
I’m sure it could be! That 09 with 220k miles I recently drove felt absolutely solid!
The auto stop start can be turned off.
Absolutely! A lot of us owners have that as muscle memory to turn off immediately after starting the car. You can also purchase OBD2 plug in anti auto S/S devices, but those can be sketchy and in some cases cause problems.
Yes, but you have to remember to turn it off every time you start the car.
Looks like the car won't remeber your last setting though...
Correct! It’s turned on every time you start the car.
@@matrixlee6392it’s not designed to remember the last setting.
When I get in my 2024 forester Wilderness.
Step 1. Put seat belt on
Step 2. Start car.
Step 3. Turn off auto start.
Exactly, lol.
i do exactly the same
I have a CTW love it.
I noticed the start stop function only works when the car oil temp is significantly heated up.
That’s a good observation! I would imagine it also has to detect enough charge in the battery since modern 12V systems can barely even accommodate all the electronics in modern cars.
5:07 wow! What’s that place?
I’m assuming you’re referring to the canyon I was driving in! Just a local feature or attraction to this part of Idaho. 😊
I love the looks of these little buggers... but there are some points I can't get past. (CVT is 1 even though I know they're good. I know they have THE best awd system bar none but to me they lack the "quality" feel that you get with something like a CX-50. They are underpowered too.. no matter how much you argue that they're not.
4:35 The steering is WAY to sensitive at highway speeds on the Ascent. Was hoping the Crosstrek would be better.
There's no permanent off option
i appreciate your honesty. thanks.
If I get one, I’m getting the basic model.. that’s it 💪💪💪💪💪
Not having a manual transmission option for the Wilderness Crosstrek is a huge disappointment.
Very interesting! Thank you for sharing.
I would buy one with the Outback turbo engine and an MT or regular AT.
That would be cool! I hope at some point they offer that configuration.
Well you won't find one with a MT...those days are long gone in family cruisers...even in HD trucks the MT isn't even an option anymore, where an MT should really be.
I hope so too, but they even took out the turbo from Forester...negative optimization@@AutomotiveAnonymous208
My only complaint is the gas mileage. I would have liked a tow-mode off switch to get better mileage.
3:22 It's clearly visible that the auto-stop is off on the dashscreen, i mean come on lol
Subaru mileage may suffer because it's FULL TIME AWD, unlike others in which 2 wheels are disconnected from the drive train until needed.
The lack of a manual transmission did it for us
I don’t blame you.
Traded my (damaged) CTW for a CTL and am really happy. The CTW's do suffer from diminished MPGs, acceleration and handling over regular CT's.
I’m glad you’re happy with your Limited, those are sweet!
I didn't know the CVT has a cooler. Thanks for sharing. I test drove the Crosstrek at the dealer and I agree the backup camera system could be better.
The Toyota RAV4 TRD does not have a CVT, it has an 8 speed auto.
Eventually they will release a hybrid. 2019 Outback and its the best car Ive ever owned so far.
Lol the one thing I ignore is the lane departure beep. Its sensitive to the lines on the road.
What do you recommend as an alternative?
7:00 They need to go back to knobs for HVAC. The iPhone style HVAC interface is horrible !
The OEM struts from the crosstrek/CW can bolt up directly to the new generation (VB) wrx. Then you can get a crosswrex.
Nice!! Thanks for sharing this!
Congrats on just getting yours, I’m glad you’re enjoying it!
WTH? ...no one has even asked: (starting at 10:15) where are these bumper and roof rack accessories available??? Who's the manufacturer?
That’s a good question!
That’s good insight and a great suggestion! Thanks for watching. 🙂
@@kippywylie yes my bad it was the lane centering.
That concern of an old Subaru having the CVT financially totaling it out is about the only severe concern I have with Subarus haha.
Subaru Crosstrek Sport or Toyota Corolla Cross Hybrid?
I’ve not driven the CC Hybrid yet, but I would assume the Crosstrek is definitely more off road capable. But toyota Hybrids in general are awesome for efficiency and reliability, and are tuned really well. But it likely doesn’t have a very competent AWD system like other hybrid Toyotas, so be aware of that if it matters to you or if you are depending on that. 🤷♂️🙂
@@AutomotiveAnonymous208Even though this car is the best for off road I think it’s excellent on road and very quiet.
Yeah, they are! And the Geolanders are really good IMO for a factory tire. At 36k miles on my heavier OBW they still have 7-8/32” dread depth.
Technically you pay 💰 over $ 10 thousand more for only 33 horsepower and annoying ℹ️ infosystem and assembly in USA 🇺🇸/ compared with the base model assembly in Japan 🇯🇵
I prefer to suck a less horsepower car 🚗 knowing will last more than the wilderness made in 🇺🇸
I love Subarus and Toyotas over any brand you 😎😎😎💪💪💪💪
Idk why you think there is wear and tear from the auto start stop feature…
Love my 2024 Crosstrek Wilderness
I’m glad to hear that!
Don't like the User Agreement EVERYTIME YOU START THE CAR!
"CVT's are bad even though mine hasn't had any issues"
Dude Subaru has been using CVT's for over a decade now and they last 200k+ miles if you keep up with the maintenance.
That’s awesome!! 🤩
Auto START/STOP needs to be OUTLAWED!!! PERIOD.. It's just STUPID.. just excessive wear and tear and once it gets some miles on it-- it will end up USING more gas to restart than if it had kept running the 30 seconds it needs to stop.
i absolutely agree i hate it
@@Soul2burn The Govt. ordered those to "save fueL"-- and never bothered to test- but it's proven NOT to save fuel at all- and it wears the engine out faster.. and eventually will FAIL- right in the middle of traffic.!!
NA 2.4 with a 6 speed auto will be perfect for me
Absolutely, and at this price point it should have the 2.4!
Sorry but seems really out of touch with car features 29 mpg is great, the infotainment center is a huge plus on this car not a negative, auto stop/start easily turned off its a non issue, backup camera is half the screen for formatting purposes lol hes complaining about luxory features? that most cars dont have?
I love my 2023 crosstrek. About 35plus mpg. Yes I hate the autostop. Plus the radio is not a good radio at all.
I would say it gets a bit better gas mileage than my Chrysler 200. Not a long shot but like you said its a beefier car.
How about Subaru fixing the microphone mute issue that is model wide?
Subaru needs to add a LAUNCH GEAR like Toyota did.
My CTW is the best car I’ve ever had! I enjoy driving it so much better than my previous Jeep Wrangler or Rav 4, and since I often go off road to remote camping/hiking areas in the PNW it’s great! Your critic seems to be hyperbole and misguided.
