Great video and I use the AeroPress at home but not out camping . What I found works great, but I have not seen them in camping stores , but, I use what basically looks like a collapsible Sea to Summit cup but it is a drip coffee funnel (?) that takes number 2 coffee filters. It nests with my collapsible cup and packs small and makes good coffee. I found it at a local dollar store and bought a couple of them. However, you have me interested in turkish coffee to try at home first.

My favorite coffee is Kirkland's from Costco. At home, I put it in a coffee grinder and turn it into a microgrind similar to Starbucks instant. From experimenting at home I know exactly how many scoops of coffee to take from a ziploc bag with my long handle spoon to make my perfect cup of joe. I don't have to pack out any grounds. Those few left in the cup, I add some water, swish around and drink up.

    My set up:
    Toaks 550 pot ti light
Cheap french press pusher without pot but fits my toaks
    Aeropress
    Handgrinder
    Boil about 450ml water
    Grind 13g coffee
Set up aeropress invertet and toss coffee in.
Pour your hot water into aeropress, stir it.
Rinse the paper filter in the lid with a few drops hot water and screw the lid.
Toss about 20-25g of whole milk powder in the remaining hot water.
Now ad the French press pusher to the pot and pump up and down until u have a nice milk foam.

Hi John. I’m into coffee too. For camping and backpacking, my set up is the Tetra Dripper (25g/0.88oz) which is a collapsible plastic filter holder my wife bought in Japan. It uses a Hario V60 01 filter. I pair it with a GSI Cascadian 12 oz. plastic cup (51g/1.8oz). I grind coffee at home and bring the amount I need in vacuum pouches. I have other setups, such as the Hario Cafeor Dripper (55g), but the Tetra is the lightest and easiest.

It’s cool how the aero press seems like some weird backpacker gear, but it’s just genuinely a really good coffee maker. There is a process, but I feel like it’s quite foolproof. I’ve definitely rushed things while I’m running late or zoned out and stepped for an extra 5 minutes and the coffee is always great. I also love pour over, but I find that requires much more technique and coffee grounds that are just the right size

I lived in Turkey for 2+ years in the 90s and yes, their coffee is fantastic. When you're making it, that's the time to add sugar, too. I'm a black coffee (Death Wish Valhalla Java) person but a little sweetness with Turkish coffee makes it that much better.

I love the aroma of freshly ground coffee in the outdoors, and the extra weight of the coffee gear has been a worthwhile sacrifice. Last year I used an AeroPress Go with a Knock Aergrind grinder. For 2021, I'll try to cut the weight some by leaving the non-essential parts of the AeroPress Go kit at home and switching to an Orphan Espresso Fixie grinder.

I’m an ultralight backpacker, so I go with Via most of the time when backpacking.
When day hiking, though, weight is not a concern at all. I try to make coffee in many ways when day hiking: AeroPress with paper filters and with the Prismo attachment, instant, moka pot, and I’ve even taken out a ceramic pour over I made. And I take a different mug I made each hike. My sister got me the GSI pour over for Christmas, so I’ll be trying that out soon, and I ordered a titanium French press that should be here soon. @@john_kelley I got it in today. It’s the Windsea Camping Coffee Pot 750mL with French Press Coffee Maker (on Amazon). I weighed it, and it’s 208g without the mesh stuff sack it comes with.
The plunger screws onto the lid, so you push the lid down to press it. There’s a gap between the rod and the lid if you unscrew it and push the plunger all the way down, so I think I’ll be able to put my Toaks alcohol stove on top of the rod, then a windscreen, pot stand, and small bottle of alcohol plus some coffee all in the pot for hiking. It’ll make a nice compact kit, and the coffee should be delicious! I’ll just have to figure out the best way to clean it before stowing everything back in the pot.

Hard plastic 3 pieces with a brass stamped rectangular mesh about 3mm long and about 0.25mm wide in 3 triangular panel's moulded in the plastic. Seriously think radiation symbol. Put on top of your cup. Put your ground coffee (just before you left and vacuum packed in individual portions) in the bottom section, put the middle part in and pour your boiled water in put the lid on wait a couple mins. ready. Weights 95g (3.3oz). About 100mm dia by 100mm high (4" × 4") double walled, internal dimension about 75mm x 70mm (1 cup) so it holds about 5 individual vac packed fresh ground coffee serves. Swiss made by elfo. Best freebie ever, 25+ yo and still works like the day it was made, sometimes I used it everyday for months on end. Again best freebie ever.

It is pretty versatile and can take ground coffee or nespresso pods (with an attachment), and also can carry its own hot water if you are only going on a short local hike. I pre-grind my beans the morning I leave and pop them into a old peanut butter jar (glass). When I want a coffee, I simply boil up some water and load up the reusable capsule/pod with the right amount of coffee, tamp down (with the provided tamper), add the hot water to the water chamber and pump away. Clean up is a bit messy and I have found the best way is to use water to rinse the used pod and internals, which could be an issue if you are carrying limited water supplies. I like the way the whole unit is self contained and packs down into its own carry case (semi rigid) so I can grab everything I need to make an espresso at one time instead of hunting several different places in my backpack. If you love your coffee, get a Wacaco Nanopresso - a little extra weight for a Parisian cafe quality espresso.

I like my morning coffee on the trail. Usually do instant. For real get up and go, I like instant Cafe Bustello. It is an instant expresso blend, very strong. When I feel like light and sweet, I usually go with Maxim, a Korean instant that has cream and sugar included in the mix. What is nice is I usually make a big cup with two packets, you can put one packet inside the other to make a stirrer, no spoon needed. For packing, estimate the number of cups of coffee you plan on having then multiply by three. Never want to run out. God bless.

So I didn’t read through all 172 comments to see if its mentioned, I bring a Moka pot for my coffee. I have 2 different sizes but typically I bring my ‘2 cup’ pot. It makes two amazing shots of espresso that I typically add more hot water to for an americano. Full bodied, heat over any flame including an open fire, fairly simple to use but does need a bit of cleaning after each use, and a deep clean every 2-3 days. Cheap to buy, not too heavy. Cheers!

Trader Joe’s sell an All dressed up instant packets coffee. ( I think 10 to a box) It has the sugar and powered creamer along with the instant coffee all in the single serving packets. I normally don’t drink my coffee with sugar and only add a splash of 2% milk when I make it daily at home. But when I’m camping or hiking I like the added sweetness and pick up the sugar adds. I for a long time drank the all dressed up “as is”then felt that there just wasn’t enough COFFEE in the all dressed up coffee packets and started to add some instant Folgers to the cup along with the packets and developed my camping coffee jam. I usually put two packets and a teaspoon of Folgers instant in my mug. It’s simple requires no specialty equipment that adds gear and extended processes. Some hot water and stir in. It’s not in any way equivalent to a high end star bucker latte something something but it’s good nuff and easy/ simple.

So I struggle with what to do with the grounds. Technically if we follow LNT; we should be packing them out. Many will say to bury; however introducing a foreign plant by product to soil can be detrimental to the environment unless you are backpacking in Brazil or a coffee producing country. That being said it’s instant for me so I don’t have to carry out coffee grounds. Swift instant coffee is good!

    • @john_kelley

@@davideagle2081 Nope; however I do pack out my wipes. Human waste buried to 6 inches doesn’t effect the PH balance of soil like coffee grounds do. Which can effect ground dwelling insects. That’s often why gardeners choose to use grounds in their soil. Great question!

When it comes to instant coffee I like Bru. You can find it in any Indian Grocery or online. One good thing is it's a coffee/chicory blend so it's extra coffee flavored. I find I can use about half the amount (aka carry half as much) and get a good strong coffee. It's good enough I would drink it at home but I have to buy it 3 hours from my house and it's a bit expensive if bought online to drink all the time, but not too expensive for a backpacking trip.

Turkish and Cowboy coffee are the same. You are heating the grounds up in a container, and pouring the coffee out of that container, with the ground coffee being trapped at the bottom.

    • @john_kelley
      @john_kelley  2 ปีที่แล้ว

There is one major difference between the two, and that’s the grind. Turkish coffee is ground almost down to a powder, while cowboy coffee uses a more course grind. They are brewed in a very similar way, though.

Dude that thing is awesome; I bought it a few months ago. You need to combine it with a manual coffee grinder so you can dial in the proper coarse grind. French press requires a pretty coarse grind so the press filter does not pass coffee grinds into your brew.
Pour over is great with the GSI Java Drip. Keith Titanium makes a super light weight pour-over canteen with the proper long-neck spout, though it is expensive.
My favorite is the GSI 3 or 6 cup perculator though. Makes great coffee, but too heavy except for car camping. It is strange that no one seems to manufacture a titanium perculator.

Great video! Here is another setup:
-- Cheese cloth cut square or circlular to about 8 inches or so, and larger if more cups needed. This will act to create a "coffee tea bag" to allow coffee to both steep and keep grounds out of your cup/pot. This is washable by rinsing it with water after use and reusable.
-- Place about 1/4 cup, or an amount to your taste, of grounds in the center of the cheese cloth, gather up the sides, and tie it off with kite string, thread, floss, or whatever works.
-- Place the "coffee tea bag" in your cup/pot after the water is boiing, or pour hot water over it in a cup/pot
-- Use a utensil to keep it submerged and work-out the air; it will eventually stay submerged by itself once the air as escaped
-- Steep for about 5 minutes and remove the "coffee tea bag"

I was like number 800:'). I have been struggling re-inventing a way to replace my electric percolator for camping, yes camping truck camping with 279ah of battery, 200 watts of solar, etc My inverter makes a pot of coffee no problem with the electric percolator it's pretty fast. Playing with different ways to make single or multiple cups. The best thing I found so far is the single serve coffee bags that you feel yourself with whatever coffee you want. It has cardboard wings that hold it suspended over the coffee cup. Unfortunately this adds $.14 per cup of coffee but the good side is I can make one cup or three or 4 cups at the same time. GSI. Netted pour over seems like a great multi use option whether you are making coffee or filtering, dirty water, and it looks like it takes up virtually no room so I think I'll give that a try. But then I'll be limited to just making one cup of coffee at a time whereas the packable coffee filters I can make three or 4 cups at the same time if needed.

I'm not a coffee snob, so I'm a fan of the single serve teabag-style coffee on trail; either Maxwell or Folgers, doesn't matter to me. It's still real coffee and not freeze dried instant crap, but there's no extra gear required, it's compact, and super easy to make and clean up. I'm already boiling water for freeze dried breakfast anyhow, so I just boil extra then steep the coffee bag in my stainless camp mug while my breakfast "cooks" in the pouch. Easy peasy lemon squeezy.
