    Who are the 30 people that gave this a thumbs down? Jason is so genuine, awesome live, and the interviewer was super knowledgeable about the songs!

    What an important figure Jason is. His songs hit me in a very deep place that very few songs do. I also love his interviews. He's so literate and smart and funny and human to the core. Part of his genius is his willingness to share his weaknesses and anxieties with us. We are so lucky to have him on the scene (and he didn't pay me to say that!).

    ‘Vampires’ and ‘Cover Me Yp’ (not done in this interview) are two of the finest love songs written this century, or any other century for that matter. I put them up there with George Harrison’s ‘Something’.
    I didn’t know Jason’s background, I started knowing about him through DBT. Listening to the interview, and his songs, I noticed how well-read and literate his songs were, and how his use of literary devices like metaphor were so sophisticated in both general discourse and songs, so I looked him up in Wikipedia, and lo and behold, he’s a creative writing major! Now why am I not surprised!
    A great interview with both artist and interviewer showing delightful self-reflection.
    It really gave me a sense of Jason’s humanity and desire, post the self-destructive period in DBT, to be a good human. More power to him and his lovely wife and his band of brothers, the 400 Unit.

      What would you expect--the host is an on air person for a public radio station---always a cut above the commercial stations as a rule......they are people who truly love REAL AND QUALITY MUSIC!!! Not just playing music that really is a secondary consideration to a commercial station---selling shit---most of we don't really need---but the powers that be want to make us think that we want and need.

    Listening to "If We Were vampires" I know young people probably don't think about this stuff too much but my wife and I have been together 45 years and we do think about life this way. Both of us have had near death experiences and we treasure every minute with our family and friends. Enjoy life, enjoy music and take care of each other........

    As always a great interview, kudos from one Jon to another Jon. What can one say about Jason…. The guy lives in my head for days after hearing anything he writes. His writing is real, gripping, and unapologetically human, and in many ways the soundtrack of my life. But “Vampires”…… aside from being the sweetest most honest love song I’ve ever heard, it literally changed my life. I never knew anything close to that kind of love until one night and thought…that’s the kind of love I’ve been hoping would find me…it did and I played it for her one night, don’t think I did it justice really but I told her it was truly how I felt, and we been together almost ten years now.

    The content of the conversation that starts with Jasons's comment at 18:45 about getting his music played on the radio and radio stations not being able to find a format, "is it rock and roll?", "is it country?" is what frustrates me most about today's radio. Country stations haven't had an issue taking music and artist that aren't the country of yesteryear and call it today's country and blasting it non-stop. So, why are they so apt to play bro' country, but not Jason Isbell and the 400 Unit, Sturgill Simpson, Parker Millsap, John Fullbright, Amanda Shires and many other artists making killer music, but not heard on today's country, rock or whatever radio? I know some stations in the country are playing them, just none in my locale.

      Popular music is marketed to people who can't hold onto their money, i.e. kids. That's so music music that sells is about getting drunk, feeling your first tittie, boys being mean to you. When you write songs that are more sophisticated and become more abstract you lose a lot of the record buying public. it's a fact of life that there's a lot of great music out there, but intelligent adults have to seek it out on their own.

    • @MartyHalpern
      @MartyHalpern 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Indeed, selling beers, crying in one's beer, getting drunk on beer, showing up drunk on beer at your girlfriend's house, and being able to dance while drunk/drinking beer/hooking up with your drunken girlfriend, ad nauseum.

    • @jamosensei

      I, personally, cannot stand most stuff on the radio, especially country. It's shoved down your throat, and you're expected to like it, and it doesn't have that 'Music is the story of our lives' feel to it. That's one of the reason I haven't done radio in years...I just never really find what I want to listen to anymore. The country from the 80s-on, has that ingenuine, soulless feel of most popular music, and has driven me to appreciate a lot of the more classic country.
      TH-cam, Spotify, Apple Music, etc, are not trying to shove unoriginal, overhyped, overplayed music down your throat...They just put everything accessible out there, and the people decide what they want to listen to. Venues like Tiny Desk Concert, KEXP, Audiotree, The Bridge, etc gives us opportunities to listen to stuff we wouldn't listen to otherwise. That's a great thing, because all music continues to morph...for country music, since around 1960ish, it was the only genre that was put out there...now, with avenues that are available to us, the hybrids are getting more exposure...contemporary bluegrass, Americana, Southern Rock...these styles, for me, have the elements of Country that I like, without all the stuff that irritates me...all this just keeps me searching for more artists like Jason Isbell & 400 Unit...great sound, thoughtful lyrics...overall, a great band that deserves to be listened to.
      Thank you, 90.9, for showcasing JI&T4HU...not because they're country, or rock, or whatever...but, because we want a little more than what the others are providing!

    • @mpgarr
      @mpgarr 6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Steve Earle has a good take on the nature of what is called "country music" today----that those who run the record companies that record the music and the radio stations that run the programming--they were going for the "easy money" to appeal to a narrow demographic that might not be so fully appreciative of good quality music, mostly only wanting background and party music----but having no appreciation of the history of country music and surely not really of much quality. Now Earle says, those who run that genre of music with their narrow parameters of what constitutes "county music" has painted themselves in a corner and now they have to live with the confines of what they have--one of those cases of "watch what you ask for---you might get it but the results may not be what you had hoped they would be." I call modern "country music" "Pop Goes the Country" and like most other modern pop music---it is music of "this second---don't worry about whether the music lasts more than five minutes-we will keep on cranking out "the hits" like it comes off an assembly line," and it is all pretty much "Throw Away Music." Most of the crap country they make now that makes up the programming and the "hot country hits"--it will not be music that "stands the test of time" and no one will listen to it 50 years from now--but much of the country music played and listened to 50 years ago will still be listened to and valued by discriminating listeners and those wanting to make REAL MUSIC that has value. They will surely be listening to the music of people like Jason Isbell, Steve Earle, Strugil Simpson, Ray Wylie Hubbard and others making that sort of music 50 years from now.

    First of all, someone from Alabama shouldn’t joke about an Iowa accent. But all joking aside, Jason is one of the best artist today weaving creative lyrics with a great classic rock sound. Creating a sound that is fresh, new, and captivating. I wish radio stations would give him more love & the air time that he truly deserves.
