This video clearly demonstrates one of the MOST IMPORTANT parts of real karate. Body conditioning. Specifically the hands. From experience, I know punching someone in the face or head (bone on bone), it is very likely you will break your bones. So sad that this is neither conveyed to today's students nor practiced any longer by most schools.
80% of the old katas are grappling. Grab, throw, choke, arm bars, wrist locks. Maybe best to concentrate of that. Striking? Open hand to hard parts of the body, closed hand to soft body parts. But you go on being a karate hard head. 😃
I've read that he was also a poet and 'Shoto' was his pen name. His students refered to the dojo as the 'ShotoKan' (Shotos building) and that's how that got started.
People don't realize how much he 'dumbed it down' so to speak. He wrote about changing it to something to be taught in junior high school for physical health (not kidding). Plus Okinawa had only recently been part of Japan, you never teach foreigners the good stuff anyways.
