The Two Sides of Sathorn - A brief history of Bangkok, Thailand - Part 2

  • The Sathorn Canal once flowed proudly through the heart of Sathorn. On one side is Sathorn and the other side is Bangrak. Here are two landmarks, one from either side. The Ghost Tower and The Prince Theatre. Will the tower ever be finished? Is it really haunted? Why do an army of cats live there? What delights could you find in the maze of alleyways around the former casino and theatre 100 yrs ago? What's it like now? I visited both places, day and night, to find out more.

Standing ovation from Chicago! Bangkok Pat “Strikes Back” with yet another amazing episode. These historical and neighborhood episodes are informative yet fun to watch. They have an urban “cool” vibe throughout.

Thank you, Thaiger for bringing Bangkok Pat’s wonderful videos and unique story telling.
The mix of old and current imagery is put together incredibly well.
Bang Rak is a fantastic area to walk through and we are looking forward to returning when Thailand gets its act together.

Pat, do you know that many foreigners, like me, married their Thai wife in Bangrak ?. This was because The Ministry of Foreign Affairs had on file the Bangrak authorised signatures and stamps and could quickly confirm the validity of the marriage certificate.
This MFA confirmation (apostille) was necessary for the wife's visa for my home country and for a marriage in Nakhon Nowhere could take many months to issue.

I did wonder why so many were saying this about Bangrak, I was imagining a lot of weddings taking place around that area!

You mentioned Thaksin bridge which now has the BTS running through the middle. When it was built, it was intended to have another line running along it which was abandoned early on. The other bridge with the park down the middle was part of the same system. There are other bits of infrastructure still in existence, but some was demolished. It was called the Lavalin railway after the Canadian company that was building it.
The depot was at Huai Kwang and it was eventually reused for the MRT when the route was built underground instead of on viaducts. You can still see the outline of the on/off ramps on satellite photos.
There is surprisingly little available on the web about this.
There was a tram network too, but hardly anything remains visible.

I really like bkk because bkk has everything and is so defrend, you can turn around a corner and its defrend from where you came from, i love the green areas, love that you can do and get whatever you want, no i not speak about sex, bkk has a nice ftont the site that tourists see but it also have a backside which many people not see and thats a pity example klong toye, i think its good to see both site of a city, i was staying in klong toye area for some time on the more poor area and for me it was not bad, out there there is not so many tourist.
