After all the years I’ve had trimmers and saws, I never knew the spark plug wire was like that. Thank you for the info! Even at 66 you can learn something new every day
I'm Echoing the previous commenter!! I've been working on small engines for decades!! I never knew or had a problem with the attachment of the spark plug wire. Thanks for your expertise!!
I use a simple fix to prevent spark plug boot damage. When replacing a boot, I first put a small amount of dielectric grease on the porcelain part of the spark plug, Then I put a small amount of dielectric grease on the rubber parts of the boot, without getting it on the metal electrical contacts within the boot. Just a small amount of dielectric grease is necessary. From then on, the boot should remove from the plug a lot easier and it will be less likely to separate the boot from the contacts.
I always push the spring all the way through the hole on the ignition wire and out the other side, then bend the end of the spring up so it looks like a U instead of an L on the end, then push it back through so its hooked into the ignition wire instead of just kind of sitting in the wire, then when you pull the boot back up over it like you showed it will never pop off when it goes through the 90 degree bend of the boot. You have to cut the hole on the ignition wire a little bit closer to the top, but its worth it. Been doing that for years and years and have never had one come off and works the first time every time. It also makes it harder for the customer to pull it off in the future as well when it is installed that way.
Great work, and it reminded me of an old saying regarding 'This is my Grandfathers Axe' which I will reinterpret. In five years time your customer says, “this is my favourite trimmer. Over the years it has had a new fly wheel, new shaft, new fuel tank, new covers, new pulley. Oh I forgot; the piston was replaced and its had a new carb and throttle cable too.” 😀
I really enjoy watching your videos and you've helped me many times to figure something out. 25 years ago I was a machinist in a shop that made a machine that cut spark plug wires to length off a huge spool, then it put the connector on and then the boot (straight, 45° or 90°). It did 60 wires minimum per minute. It was a fun build. Be careful of the thickness of business cards, different card stock is thicker or thinner than the .011 you need for the gap off your magneto. I was taught to use paper from a coil bound note pad, fold it 3 times so it's 3 layers thick which comes out to .011 thick. It's just another way of doing it.
Just had the same issue with the spark plug boot today on a Stihl FS70. So tight to get off and now I need to do some DIY which i'm not looking forward too but this video helped. 🙂
Like ur content, I repair small engines also, woodworking, and full time lawn care with just under 100 yards down here in Drew county Ar.. What I have done in past for what u just did with the coil wire and boot is I cut and put 2 pieces of shrink wrap on the wire and after inserting spring in the hole I slid one piece of shrink wrap up shrunk it then slid 2nd piece up over that one and shrunk it over that.. seems to keep together ever time for me.
I have an Echo HC-152 hedge trimmer that would not run after a few seconds. I ordered a new carburetor off of ebay. I just got it today and put it on. Runs great now. I gave about $14.00 for the new carburetor. Thanks for your videos. Saved me time money and frustration. I ran two tanks of gas in it today.
I had that situation with the spring type plug connector and anticipated the misery of keeping it connected when reinstalling the boot so I wrapped dental floss around it to hold it in the coil wire. Dental floss is quite strong.
Great video Bre, thanks so much. We all get that 'Ohhh Nooooo' feeling when the plug cap comes off when all we're trying to do is do a quick plug change. Handling that spikey ended plug spring wire was always a pain so appreciate you showing it so clearly. Appreciate your time and effort 👍👌👏.
Take some superglue when you put in the spring into the rubber on the electronic ignition put super glue in the hole push it down with your pliers hold it let it sit then put your grommet boot back on slide it over and normally it’ll hold I’ve done hundreds of them mostly they don’t pop out like you said but the ones that do are a pain in the ass so I try and put super glue to hold it in there so when it bends around the 90 you don’t have to worry about a popping out my friend great show
Yes plug boots are a pain. I even ordered a coil with the boot attached from Amazon, but it keeps over heating. Next one will be OEM even if it costs more. Thanks for letting me know the proper way to put bootb on.
You would be surprised how many of my peeps on here HATE me making any video that doesn't have me repairing something. LOL! My Corvette video actually got like 20 dislikes! That's a lot for me. LOL!
You might want to try a piece of heat shrink tubing to keep the coil lead set in the wire...makes life a lot easier and helps keep it togther...clean the lube off before you heat shrink and relube before you install...ive also used this method when the wire end is a little compromised as well...
Now this was a interesting video and thank you for these videos on how to replace a spark plug boot with that spark contact wire, because it has already saved me money and time. Back when you did the video on the sthil MS 311 chainsaw I watched that video and soon after that I tried to change my spark plug being very careful with the boot twisting back and forth and the spark plug wire came right out of the boot, because of the video you made I was able to put mine back together. The one thing that I did do differently to make sure that it never happens again and it seemed to work I took black electrical tape and went around that contact wire that goes through the spark plug wire where it is flat and taped it to the spark plug wire, now it stays put when I remove it.
We love your content. So thorough and smooth, explaining everything in detail. Business card trick works like a charm. Keep up the great work!!! Thank you.

I rub a little dielectric grease on the insulator of the plug and put a little in the spark plug boot. This helps to remove the spark plug wire without pulling out the bayonet connector from the spark plug wire. I cannot tell you how many times I have had to put them back on. I like the bayonet connectors with the two barbs on them. They do not come off like those single barb connectors.
Nicely done once again. Your procedure is very much like automotive ignition wire repair. Small engine repair is more difficult with ignition wire as it is smaller scale and tough if you have big hands and fat fingers. Thanks for the realistic demo 👍.
That customer must have really liked his trimmer Bre. With all the parts and labor i probably would have bought a new one being it was used commercially! 👍🇺🇸
New one is $349 and the fix was about $200. That included a new speed feed head. Piston and carb were still perfect, so it was right there on the edge of not being worth it.
Hey chickie and if there’s another way you can do it. I’ve done this for 10 to 15 years and I’ve never had a problem. Lube inside the boot in through that passage that wire goes connect the metal piece back up I like using WD-40 through that passage and then you just push the metal wire through it might take a little bit of effort but it will go through and it works perfectly
Yikes 😳, Good to know , I have never had to put a boot back on for a. Plug wire On my trimmer that would be cost prohibitive to fix. As a homeowner I use a home owner grade equipment MTD trimmer. It works and always starts, but if I used it commercially it wouldn’t last . Great vid there never seen how todo this on a trimmer,
Thank you for the clear explanation, good audio and excellent video shots that make this really useful. Your tips throughout are very helpful. How to pull off a spark plug wire was something I never actually knew. A lot of your techniques for diagnosing a problem and installing or repairing an item cross over to other pieces of small engine equipment. So, doubly helpful in a way. Just happened on your channel recently but subscribed and liked immediately.
Echo needs to use the Shindaiwa trigger grip assembly. Not one of my guys like the newer Echo trigger grip. They/me all like either the Redmax or Husqvarna grip. Shindaiwa is nice unit, just a little heavy for a 25cc class pro trimmer.
I've had a bolt break once, was an engine housing bolt. I was doing about 50 mph when this happened on a 125 cc bike, I can tell you it wasn't much fun as it jammed it self under the clutch so that it didn't even work at all.
Pro tip to the pro, put a piece of heat shrink tube over the coil wire and tang of the plug contact. It saves some frustration when pulling the wire through the boot.

The simplest things can be so dang aggravating! Thanks for the tips. Hey could you take some dental floss or something and tie the spring to the wire to hold it in place and prevent it coming loose again or would that be a bad idea?
Got a question! I have an 2007 craftsman 22 hp riding mower that has a problem with turning over. With a full charge you turn the key it won't work but if you turn and hold the key a wait it's like it's building up a charge before the new starter engages

Need the Husqvarna carb adjustment tool specifically, but more tools don't hurt. Thanks. Nevermind I saw it on this one. Can't believe it is a$50,000 fine for the carb tool to sell.

Hello I have a 2014 ish bad boy with a 747 cc kohler. The problem is when I unplug the grounds to the coils it runs perfect until I plug back in the grounds then it loses the right cylinder. Any ideas
Looks like putting a piece of heat shrink tubing or even electrical tape around where that spring goes through the wire would hold it in place while the boot is slid over it and in place. Just an observation.

Red/white/green..Hasn't run in over 20 yrs, complete from a 98 yo WW2 vet, should I crack it open and fully restore it, (or rings and a good cleaning?) I want this saw to last another 50 or so yrs..parts seem aplenty online, any advice?
I have an old 031AV Stihl that I've got problem with on this repair. The wire itself is too short to work it through the boot and attach the spring. Down the wire an inch or so is a clear cover that looks almost like fuel line. I could cut it back but am not certain it would help. I could cut the boot off at the wire end but am afraid that would create a short to ground. There's no way the spring will go through the wire end of the boot. It's simply too large. I wish I could attach a picture here.

Hold your hand out you naughty girl! I saw you do up that nut with needle nose pliers! 😆 Those boots come off with a little twist, do it the wrong way and the spiral connector locks on. The customer was lucky to get away with just the damage shown, it looks like bits got trapped against the engine casing, there's a transfer port right there, one cracked and it would have been junk!

Way better system to connect spark plug ends,,!
