    The first save Miller was being called to come to the bench for an extra attacker because they were down by 2 goals with only a couple of minutes left in the game. He was on his way to the bench when they turned the puck over so he raced back to make the save.

      The issue with Price is he makes some really difficult saves look almost casual. Sure he's got tons of highlight reel saves, but it's the ease with which he moves around his crease that allows him to make it look easy so often.

  • @HankJr.
    @HankJr. 3 ปีที่แล้ว +16

    The reason Miller the goaltender was caught so far out at 1:50 was because he was being called to the bench so his team can get an extra player known as an extra attacker. It was nearing the end of the game and his team is down by two goals and teams will generally pull their goaltender to get an extra player in the final minutes of the game in an attempt to tie the game up and send it to overtime. Obviously that leaves their net empty but it’s a desperation strategy to not lose. If the goal deficit is greater than two it’s very rare for teams to pull their goalies unless it’s in the playoffs.

    Domink Hasek was in this video maybe four times, and is one of the best goalies of all-time. The clips may be on a potato, but his style of goaltending is not able to be replicated. Goalie coaches told goalies not to play like him because his style was so acrobatic and chaotic. He won the goalie of the year award six times, and he's the only goalie in NHL history to win the MVP of the league twice.

    • @sksaddrakk5183
      @sksaddrakk5183 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I agree... Hasek was a 'freestyle' goalie and give two fucks about how goalkeeper should play... he used whatever he could to stop the puck from going into the net... he was no stand-up nor a butterfly goalie and allegedly he practised his 'making snowman while lying on the ice'... so even if it looks desperate, there was method to his madness... I mean he won the Vezina, Hart, William M. Jennings and Lester B Pearson (now Ted Lindsay) Trophy several times during his stint with Buffalo who were a rather 'meh' team at the time... also he had the highest save percentage six times in a row.... he was a beast and his saves made it often onto the highlight reel despite (or maybe even because) of his unorthodox playstyle...

    Tony Esposito just recently passed away but he’s one one of the very best of the old timers. They aren’t as flashy back then because goalies hadn’t really mastered the position yet. But a reaction to him would be an awesome tribute to a true pioneer

    • @JPMadden
      @JPMadden 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      They had mastered the position. It was just very different. Despite being smaller the pads were heavier because they were made of horsehair, and became even heavier when they got wet. Even if someone had thought of playing the modern "butterfly" style, the heavy pads and the lack of understanding about stretching muscles would probably have made it impossible. Also, they tended to choose the smallest kid/guy to be the goalie, which doesn't make sense now but it did then when they thought all big guys were slow and "muscle bound." Ever noticed in some old NHL footage that it looks like there is a 5-foot-tall child playing in net?

    As a wings fan and reliving those 5 robbe... great saves, this caused me great pain. That's one thing about hockey that I cherish the most; no matter how vitriolic someone might be toward a certain team, when any goalie makes a save like those displayed here, you respect it. You might hang your head or shout a 4-5 letter word or seven; but you still respect the save.
    As far as goalies being able to play baseball; I think any NHL player could play literally any sport and at least be competent at it.

      I don't know about Lu. He's a great person, accomplished goalie and goofball on Twitter, but I can't see a context where I'd include him with the first three. Crawford...maybe. He had a very good go for a few years when he had the ludicrous offensive setup, but he kind of petered out. I'd no CuJo and Quick. If we're going total hockey career I'd put in Howard before Quick.

      @@nochannel1q2321 I put Quick and Crawford in that list cause they had very good years and multiple stanley cups ... Luongo and CuJo both were excellent goalies having the most wins without cups when they each retired. As a wings fan i would include Howard personally but most dont think of him as a great goalie

      @@nuckingfutzz1980 Howard was great at UMaine. He set (and holds) virtually all of the goalie records there still. But then DET offered him Grand Rapids and half a million a year and he never really synched up properly. Quick was good in college, but like, Howard holds the NCAA record at 1.19 GAA and .956 SV, for example. If we're just doing professional careers I wouldn't include Howard, though. Hasek definitely and I'd like to include Turco because he was awesome and he had so much fun player, gambling with fans from the bench, making players fall into their bench, playing baseball with his stick and the puck, etc. I heard he used to screw with his teammates during shooting and shootout drills by screaming compliments at them.

    Back when I played we once had a conversation between few of our defencemen and goalies and both though the others were crazy. Defencemen thought that the goalies were crazy jumping in front of shots without any padding on their back and all goalies thought defencemen were crazy getting hit and hitting but also getting in front of shots with their flimsy pads.

    1:50 In hockey, you can call the goalie to the bench. It's also called "pulling the goalie". When the goalie has arrived on the bench, he will be replaced with a sixth skater. This is usually done by the team with the least goals to have an advantage to at least tie the game and force an OT or shootout. This is probably why he was outside of his crease at the time of the save. I know this has been explained, but I'm bored and posting this for anyone else. Hahaha

    Thanks for sharing, and I was happy to see that two of the included saves were made by Calgary Flames goalie Miikka Kiprusoff, widely regarded here as the finest (and most acrobatic) goaltender to ever play for the Flames.
    For some icing on the cake, here's his top-ten saves

    1:49 Its because if you take the goalie off the ice, you can get an extra attacker on the ice (Typically done when you are down 1, or 2 goals at the end of the game)

    It was Ryan Miller, he left the net for the extra attacker. The opposing team got control of the puck, he dove back across to keep it at a one goal game.

    You should do a Ryan Miller. Best American born goalie in the history of the league. Also that clip where the goalie was skating to the bench he was coming off to get a 6th skater on the ice because they were down by 2 late in the 3rd period. Great vid as always
