    The Soviet Red Army hockey team was touring the US and Canada in the 70s playing NHL teams, Stanley Cup Champions and All Star teams and winning. For a team of college kids to beat them was magical.

    You definitely need to react to the movie. The movie is called "Miracle" starring Kurt Russell as Coach Herb Brooks. This video leaves out one huge important thing - just a few days before the Olympics, the Soviets destroyed USA in an exhibition game.

      @@jwn411Miracle is a great movie. And it does a really good job with references. Buzz Schneider’s own son plays him. The real team visited the set and they thought it was great. The actors had to pass a real hockey try out before they were even allowed to read. They tried to get people who resembled the players closely too in features and backgrounds. The camera use in that film is wonderful.

      1/2 I don't want to be a jerk here by disagreeing with the previous comment, but do not watch the Disney movie "Miracle" for realism; they didn't even have the decency to film in Lake Placid, instead in western Canada. What the movie got right were the speeches before the USSR game, and the one after period two against Finland. The telegram from the older Texan woman, "Beat those commie bastards", was true, but it didn't happen as it was dramatized in the movie.

      2/2 I was in 3rd grade, my brother in 6th, but we knew what was going on, we knew about Carter pulling out of Moscow because we were on a bus together with my mother when it was announced. I knew about the 10-3 MSG loss to the Soviets We watched the game at 5:00, not on tape delay at 8:00...because we lived in Lake Placid. After Mick and my "We beat the Russians, we beat the Russians" cheer my brother and I ran into Mom's bathroom, who was soaking in a tub after working the Olympics that day, and through the window adjacent we could hear the DEBUT of "USA, USA, USA" from across Mirror Lake.
      I saw that wall of telegrams before the game: we had access to almost everything.
      That Monday we went to the local bookstore, and I got the autographs of Mark Johnson, Eric Strobel, and Mike Eruzione.
      And Al Michaels stepped on Ken Dryden's call of, "It's over."

      The Soviet Union's hockey team had played against NHL teams and the WHA and defeated them overwhelming in the seventies. That's why an amateur American team defeating them was considered a miracle.

    • @ORagnar
      @ORagnar ปีที่แล้ว

      When they were allowed to use pro-players in the Olympics things did change. You effectively had all star teams playing in the Olympics. 2

    • @IslesYankeeLady
      @IslesYankeeLady 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@ORagnarIf you watch Miracle you will know that the NHL all stars of that time DID play them in an exhibition. They lost. There weren’t Russian players in the NHL. Technically the Russians were “Amateurs” as required by Olympic rules of the day. They were just phenomenally better. Miracle describes that the Russian style of play was beating the European and Canadian styles. Herb Brooks figured out that it wasn’t about skill to beat the Russians, it was basically necessary to run them into the ground. He specifically did NOT believe that an All Star team would work and didn’t pick the most skilled options. He scouted them all very specifically to see if they could endure the training. This is why the younger team had a shot. But the Russians (still TECHNICALLY Amateurs, playing for the government,) had players that had played together for 15 years already. They had extra experience and chemistry too. Eventually, the Russians and their style would come to the NHL.
      The University hockey players were still very talented, they just didn’t have the chance to gel or had quite the skill of the Russians. But they didn’t beat them with skill. This video is describing that Herb made himself a villain through extreme training so they would join together against him. It was particularly necessary because most of the players came from around the state of Minnesota or Boston. That’s College (University for you all) hockey rivalry 101. A bunch of the players were very familiar rivals over the last few years before that team. Herb Brooks was the Coach of the University of Minnesota.

    It's hard to describe to someone who wasn't around when this occurred just how monumental of an event this was. It's the greatest sports moment I ever saw and I watch & love a lot of different sports. An interesting side note; on top of the incredible nail-biting tension of the game itself, the Soviet team had refused to allow the start time of the game to be moved to put it in primetime for American TV, but the network in the US decided to air the game during primetime anyway. So, there was a 3 he delay between the live game & the broadcast. It was really nerve-wracking to avoid having anyone tip me off to the result before I could watch the game.

    I was born in 1980 and grew up playing and watching hockey all through my childhood. Even into the '90s, it's impossible to overstate how feared the CCCP/Russian hockey teams were. Even the Soviet/Russian players who came over to the NHL were a different breed. They were machines. Relentless on the ice. Fast, efficient, and they hit like a freight train. A bunch of American college kids beating them was David beating Goliath. It wasn't supposed to happen, and, 9 times out of 10, it probably wouldn't.

    As sports fans we live for these moments, the majority of the time a season ends in failure, with moments of absolute frustration, why these rare events are so meaningful to us.

    This game took place when Olympians were supposed to be amateurs. The Soviet team were paid players and ice hockey was their job. This same Soviet team had come to Philadelphia to play the Flyers, who were known as the "Broad Street Bullies". They caused a huge uproar when they left the ice and refused to play because they said that the Flyers played to rough.

    Just a week or 2 before the Olympics, these 2 teams played each other in an exhibition. Russia won 10-3!

    Watch the movie , a great true story of how they came together , the drama , the blood , sweat and tears...just a great story of sports heroes that were just college kids !!!....it would be a great reaction....you two are great young people and represent what I have always loved about brits....My ancestor came over on the Mayflower and I was taught to be proud of my British , welsh and german roots....I just cant stand this new breed of self haters ...be proud of being British , Brits created the modern world that we all enjoy....without the Brits and thier American offspring the world would be a dark possibly horrific place to live as has been almost all of human history....Always remember your people were the start of our modern world of freedom....

    This was before the fall of the Iron Curtain, so those Russian athletes were only allowed to leave Russia for these events. They had guards watch over them so they didn't defect, making that "we wish we were them" statement more meaningful. Don't get me wrong, not everyone wanted to defect, but the fact that they didn't have the option was oppressive.
