"Time ho gaya hai, pack up". Those were Rajesh Khanna's last words, says Amitabh Bachchan in his blog.
Amitabh wrote that a close functionary told him Rajesh's last words in a choked voice Wednesday when he gone to condole the death of India's first superstar at his home Ashirwad.
Rajesh Khanna was battling cancer for real. He was in and out of hospital these last two months, but never lost the indomitable spirit he assumed on screen in Anand. On June 21, after being reported severely unwell and not having eaten for days, a visibly weak Mr Khanna emerged onto the balcony of his home to wave and flash the victory sign to the throng of worried fans gathered.
Rajesh Khanna quietly walked into the sunset of life, lonely, ill and maybe, sorrowful. His last hit film had come a little under three decades ago. New films were seldom offered to him. And those that did come his way were helmed by rank amateurs, doing little for his reputation or career, a far cry from the days of super stardom when every producer, director, heroine, wanted to work with him.
On the personal front, he was stricken with cancer. And except a friend or two, he had only his daughter, Rinke, for support. Slowly, he was losing the battle with the debilitating disease. Yet he chose to spring a surprise. He came back virtually from the dead. His diehard fans, starved of a staple diet of his films, turned all misty eyed as Rajesh Khanna, frail, wrinkled, sunken jawed, hollow cheeked, a world removed from the charismatic hero of the late ’60s and early ’70s, addressed his fans one last time in the Havells fans television commercial. “ Mere fans mujh se koi nahin chheen sakta ,” went his last dialogue.
Who else could have revealed Rajesh Khanna's final words to the world but Amitabh Bachchan. The two created history in Bollywood with their film 'Anand'. It is uncanny that Rajesh Khanna died of a form of cancer about 40 years after his onscreen avataar 'Anand' died in the film named after him of the same disease.
At the end of the movie, 'Anand' dies but leaves a poignant message for his doctor friend (played by Amitabh): "Babumoshai, zindagi aur maut upar wale ke haath hain jahapanah, use naa aap badal sakte hain na main" (Life and death are dealt by the Almighty, neither you nor I can change that).
For those who were looking to hear from Big B on his reactions to his colleague and one-time rival's death on the social networking site about the passing away of Bollywood's first superstar, Rajesh Khanna, they were not disappointed.
He was a little late with his tweet considering that he had rushed to pay his final respects to the veteran actor and his family the moment he heard the news of Rajesh Khanna's death.
Amitabh tweeted: "At his home earlier today, someone close came up and told me, his last words were 'time up ho gaya - pack up!!'"
According to Indian news channels, Amitabh was reduced to tears at the sight of his colleague when he reached Aashirwaad on Carter Road in Mumbai's Bandra. He told the family that he too was a Rajesh Khanna fan.
