This was really beautiful drumming. It's a very hard thing to do what Pridgen does without being overwhelming, particularly to such smooth music and yet he pulled it off.
I can imagine walking into a jazz club and seeing Thomas playing this song. Though not his style, he still shows he can take it and make it his own. A true master at his craft.
Yes...this is at an annual "drummer festival" The crowd is atleast 90% drummers, who come to see the pros do clinics or demonstrate their style (and talents!) of drumming by performing with other musicians. i.e. They are supposed to be more featured or as you say, "overplay" than they would normally at a real gig.
Even if it is (sounds more like a cranked 14", plus it matches the first floor tom in size), if you look closely at the hats, you can see the top cymbal is labeled "Rock Crash". They only make those in 16" and 18" sizes, so I'd say these are 18-inchers, going by the deeper pitch.
i was there too. met jojo back stage too and got a chance to meet jason bittner again. he is such a nice guy. they all were. derek roddy tho. he was the nicest guy i met there. after todd sucherman of course but still it was a great experience to see all those drummers before any one else could
probably most people commenting here saw them live. i dont remember what he had when i saw them in philly, i didnt really want to get this in depth but, in this particular video you can see the stamps on the hats, they're regular A's.
I wish more people thought like this. Everyone that makes music makes it their own way. And anybody that tells them that their way is wrong (with the exclusion of basic technique and all) are wrong themselves. Come on people, chill out and show some courtesy to your fellow musicians.
@Drunkwraith couldnt have said it better myself....leads learn by hearin themselves first and the band second...but drummers learn to feel and anticipate the music before it happens...thats why sometimes we know where they are going but they have no idea where we maybe going....bless them anyhow...they are needed as well...lol
@Drunkwraith hey i hear ya man same here. the best way to learn new stuff is to jam with other people and not by yourself. improv music is the best learner and going outside your "musical comfort zone" you seem to pick up things alot faster that you thought were impossible the day before. ive made a hand full of songs with my friend who plays guitar just by jamming and then we both get that spark of musical genious when it all fits perfectly. no better feeling in the world.
I totally agree...he's going to be like a fine wine and get better with age :) that's not to say he isn't absurdly good right now tho lol. I just can't wait to hear all the crazy shit he'll be coming up with in a couple years
Besides there is no point in arguing over it. I'm pretty sure nobody will change the way they play just because a bunch of people on a internet video site say they play wrong. That would defy the point of expressing yourself through music.
yea not 2 many people know dat...i tried to post it on wikipedia but some (probably mars volta fan) deleted it cuz he dont know who keyshia is or somethin
@Drunkwraith yea dude just had that yesterday but with a muse-y sounding song. and a heavier metal style song. garage jam sessions cant be beat im my opinion.
Those are at least 17-inchers, if not 18-inchers. I'm using 15-inchers now, and they're nowhere near that big. Just look at the size in proportion to the 14" snare.
Those Hi Hats are most definite 16in & not 15in. I've played 15in Hi Hats all my life and can hear & tell the difference. The giveaway is look at the difference of the snare (14in) and the hats...very noticeable in size!! But most important this is some great playing by Thomas Pridgen!!!
Ok, he couldn't be THAT original... nobody is! Now lemme think of a drummer just like him... ....... And that is my argument to his insane awesomeness.
right w/ u there he is awesome i wish i cud get a sponser but i've been playin for 7 years and yet no one has come to me to get me as a drummer im really good almost as good as the average drummer but yet i have the shit for a kit tama swingstar w/ paiste pst3's i can play almost every rush song :)
not that it really matters, but you've got to be blind if you think those hihats are a customs. and even worse if they look 15'' to you. who cares what zildjian says. they dont keep track of everyone like that. he doesnt play one thing just cuz the website says something.
damn. Thomas Pridgen is one of the best in our time.
wat a lot of people don't realize is that thomas is clean. he's very well-timed, its just that he accents everything to such a degree ppl dont notice
The synchronicity of these 3 is flawless. Especially that keys player, actual bass lines while playing chords. 2:07 groove is 😘
This was really beautiful drumming. It's a very hard thing to do what Pridgen does without being overwhelming, particularly to such smooth music and yet he pulled it off.
i will never stop drummin never it's too fun!
Right on dude!! Ambrose is unbelievable!!
One of the nicest sounding kits I've heard. The things I would do for it. The finish is so amazingly amazing.
I can imagine walking into a jazz club and seeing Thomas playing this song. Though not his style, he still shows he can take it and make it his own. A true master at his craft.
Ambrose is an insane horn player.

This dude bends time...
Damn! His drumsticks are huge! I couldn't play with those
Everything about his kit sounds so amazing here. The drums, the cymbals. Fuck.
i went to this fest and my friend took me backstage and i got to see all of these guys and some others like jojo meyer. great time
Even if it is (sounds more like a cranked 14", plus it matches the first floor tom in size), if you look closely at the hats, you can see the top cymbal is labeled "Rock Crash". They only make those in 16" and 18" sizes, so I'd say these are 18-inchers, going by the deeper pitch.
You can tell he didn't put a whole lot of thought into a solo, he just improvised, let it flow and had fun with it.
im bow my head deep as a "metal drummer" to the incredible flexibility of this man
i was there too. met jojo back stage too and got a chance to meet jason bittner again. he is such a nice guy. they all were. derek roddy tho. he was the nicest guy i met there. after todd sucherman of course but still it was a great experience to see all those drummers before any one else could
dude is killin!!!!
probably most people commenting here saw them live. i dont remember what he had when i saw them in philly, i didnt really want to get this in depth but, in this particular video you can see the stamps on the hats, they're regular A's.
Thomas is amazing.
Thomas is a monster. He's ultra funky. Nice control and timing.
cant believe i spend so much years looking for the bass man O_O...
Love this video!!!
Awesome drummer, that kit sounds so good.
Embrace all that drums are for crying out loud. They exist, and we can use then however we like. And that is beautiful.
i lobe the trumpet at 2:14 nice melody
they havin fun
I wish more people thought like this.

zildjian makes custom hats for TP i think they are 17". U can get the exact numbers on the zildjian website.
@JDilla2812 was the drummer for the mars volta. other bands idk.
@Drunkwraith couldnt have said it better myself....leads learn by hearin themselves first and the band second...but drummers learn to feel and anticipate the music before it happens...thats why sometimes we know where they are going but they have no idea where we maybe going....bless them anyhow...they are needed as well...lol
how tight!!
@yasiex0x nope those hats are 18" zildjian a series i think medium crashes, used as hats
very nice, really unique groove
Woah, that's one GREAT sounding drumset...
Oh sick! Glad he plays with Ambrose!

Thomas was the Music Director for Keyshia Cole now he's with THE MARS VOLTA!!!!
18" hats ! :O
@JDilla2812 He also played for R & B singer Keisha Cole
Guess Derek doesn't understand the concept of the Modern Drummer Festival showcasing, get this, a drummer!!
I totally agree...he's going to be like a fine wine and get better with age :)

@JDilla2812 Used to be, The Mars Volta, now he's in his own band, The Memorials...
yea not 2 many people know dat...i tried to post it on wikipedia but some (probably mars volta fan) deleted it cuz he dont know who keyshia is or somethin
Yeah...
Thats an amazing kit! I don't have much luv for teh DW, but that finish is badass!
@Drunkwraith yea dude just had that yesterday but with a muse-y sounding song. and a heavier metal style song. garage jam sessions cant be beat im my opinion.
how do u make the stack he hits at 1:59 - 2:10... i really wanna get that sound
Yeah, those hats are pretty damn big.
no those are 2 17" a custom crashes stacked on top of each other.
are those cymbals for the hi hats?
@DDrummerxD yes he is ;)
Those are at least 17-inchers, if not 18-inchers. I'm using 15-inchers now, and they're nowhere near that big. Just look at the size in proportion to the 14" snare.
is this the guy from the mars volta?
wow amazing sound. Especially the snare. Drummers also fucking good.
are those his 16" hats? they are insanely huge!
Where is the part 2
How big are his hi hats?? They look like 16" o.O

Jesus Christ there it is again, The elusive 18" Hi Hat!
ya i was like Huge hi-hat
Almost 18"!
who is on trumpet?
Those Hi Hats are most definite 16in & not 15in. I've played 15in Hi Hats all my life and can hear & tell the difference. The giveaway is look at the difference of the snare (14in) and the hats...very noticeable in size!! But most important this is some great playing by Thomas Pridgen!!!
who is he performing with??
They're both pretty good drummers but i think tony is a little more about the show, sort of a crowd pleaser. Whats the link?
Ok, he couldn't be THAT original... nobody is! Now lemme think of a drummer just like him...
.......
And that is my argument to his insane awesomeness.
bands is this guy in?
@rcaudill1960 Ithink that it's 15" hi-hat cymbal. maybe zildjian new beat?
am i the only one who cant just look at those hats and know they're big-assed A's?

New thomas pridgen footage from MD at my channel!
TH-cam needs a slowmotion feature, just to comprehend his playing.
i have some great news for you...
those are 16 inch hats cause his left crash is a 17
he uses 2 18" crashes as hi-hats. fuckin intense.

not that it really matters, but you've got to be blind if you think those hihats are a customs. and even worse if they look 15'' to you. who cares what zildjian says. they dont keep track of everyone like that. he doesnt play one thing just cuz the website says something.
Jeremy Bryan twitted this!
@rcaudill1960 when he opens/ closes it, it kinda freaks me out, it's like some sort of weird animal
no dude hes using two 18 inch crashes!
