That crowd participation is why we recommended this live version. It's just something you have to see. Bassist Par Sundstrom was even holding his hands to his head like he couldn't believe that response. They shoot these live versions from onstage quite a bit, gives you a perspective you don't normally see.
If you want to try another live, I suggest Ghost Division, 40:1, or Uprising from Polish Woodstock in 2012.

This song is about the Thirty Years' War that dominated central Europe in the 17th century (1618-1648). To this day it is one of the longest and bloodiest wars in history, with the death toll falling between 4 million and 8 million. Many of the fatalities were not even from active warfare, but famine and disease also plagued the area, upping the casualties that much more. Casualties reached such a high number that many Swedish men were forced to fight when they had barely reached manhood, and sometimes even before then. Which really makes the title of the song ("A Lifetime of War" in English) hit a little harder. Men basically spent their entire lives at war, no chance for a peaceful life.
The was about the battle between Catholics and Protestants, and at some point during the war almost every major player/Country in Europe was a part of it.
This Swedish version of the song tells the story from a Swedish soldier's point of view. You should also check out the English version; it is not a direct translation from the Swedish, but it rather tells the story of the war from the perspective of the outside people, those not involved directly in the war but were affected by it.
The lyrics hits hard, but it also shows that even when times change, new technology comes, one thing remains constant and that is the horrors of the war, both those who fall in it and those who survive and have to live with nightmare every day (ptsd).

And part of the audience reaction is "it could have been me". The audience was obviously Swedish and as soldiers were conscripted, had they lived in a different time it could have been them.
A kind of somber echo of what was a traumatic event for the nation.
(As a Finn it could have been me, too, considering we were part of Sweden back then.)

Germany had the biggest casualities in that war. 3-9 million people died with a population between 15 and 20 million people at the time. Put into relation, it was bloodier than the second world war yet a much more forgotten war in our history.

I only speak English and Army, so my first thought is always going to be to listen to the English version. However, the Swedish version of this is clearly superior. The songs are totally different in meaning, and as a 27 year veteran, this one hits me hard. They also have the opposite. Their video on the Swedish Royal Guard has a translation which is much closer to the original, but the videos are very different. The Swedish version has them pushing markers on a map, as if in a headquarters, but the English version shows a desperate battle between the Swedes and Ottoman Turks. In that case, the English video is clearly more exciting.
And you looked delightful enough to be quite distracting from the lyrics.

Excellent reaction. Sabaton released two albums about the Swedish Empire, one in English and one in Swedish. In most cases, the song lyrics were the same, but for En Livstid i Krig (A Lifetime of War) the lyrics are starkly different. The English version is a more generic representation of the war, but the Swedish version tells the tale of a single Swedish soldier from the time of his enlistment as a boy to his death, literally spending his entire life fighting a war. A tragic yet inspiring example of both the horror of war and the dedication of the Swedish people to their homeland.

I look around and I see my home fade away
My time at home now feels far too short
Just a youth, barely a man when duty called me
If i get to see my home again, that I do not know
Amongst friends from my village, I went out to figtht
      And the world burned

      So see me as

      But who will miss me?

Went to fight for Sweden, was baptized in blood
Out there where death awaits, not heroism
In fields where kinsmen fall no song is heard
Challenging our destiny one more time

      Far from home
      Baptized and die in battle

      And the world burned

      For war it can
      Destroy a man
I give my life for my homeland

      But who will miss me?

And when my time runs out
      Who cares then?
      They fight on
Does a soldier get a worhty end?
      To fall asleep
      Pass away
      And never wake up

@@themetalmuse There's another song on that double album where the lyrics differ between the Swedish and English version. It's the song 1648, about the Swedish siege of Prague. The Swedish version is, once again, from the point of the Swedish soldiers while the English version is from the point of view of the people of Prague. It was the last battle of the 30 year war. It started in Prague 1618 and it ended in Prague in 1648.

Interesting to know that you like to hear bands singing in their own language, so do I whether I understand it or not! Yeah, I like Saboton my introduction to them I blame on Floor, when I found out about the connection I just had to investigate 😆, I’ve not been disappointed but I’ve not seen them live yet!
Just a thought, you may remember me pointing out a band called The Warning, they’re from Mexico and mostly sing in English (they were raised in a dual language school); but early on in their career the Mexican press critics criticised them because they didn’t sing in Spanish. This annoyed them so they wrote a song named Narcissista (you can guess 🤭) - Paulina the Drummer sings the main vocals on this one! Then there’s their second song from the current album (Error) called Marterio both are very good songs both with an interesting message! You might like them!

It describes the 30 years war in Europe (1618-1648) from a young Swedish boys perspective, sent out to a war far from home in a small village to a country he dont even know where it is. One can say that this conflict actually was the first world war, because so many nations was involved.

Its all real live and one take. I was there on the left, and it gives me the chills everytime i hear it. The most epic consert moment of all time 🤟🤟🤟🤟. Sadly Tommy the lead guitarist just left the band to make his own journey and take up his singing. Watch his videos when he sings covers, for example you raise me up search Tommy Johansson.

@@themetalmuse No huge deal, the message of the song still comes across just fine. But "Bland fränder från min by så drog jag ut i strid" should be "Among kinsmen from my village i went to battle", odd that they missed the village part cause it's the literal translation and more powerful/emotional than just "Among kinsmen...". Then in the chorus it should be "Cause the war it can destroy a man", it rhymes the same way in Swedish. Little things like that but i know i'm picky with these things lol.

I look around and see my home disappear
My time at home now feels far too short
Mere youth, hardly a man when duty called for me
I don't know if I'll see my home again
Among relatives from my village, I went out into battle
And the world was on fire
      Because the war can,
      Destroy a man
I give my life for my motherland
      But who misses me?
      So see me as this
      A husband, a friend
Father and son who never comes back home
      But who mourns for me?
Went into battle for Sweden, was baptized in blood
Out there, death awaits, not heroism
In fields where kinsmen fall, no song is heard
      Challenging our destinies, once again
Far Away From Home (Be baptized and die in battle)
And the world was on fire
      Because the war can,
      Destroy a man
I give my life for my motherland
      But who misses me?
      So see me as this
      A husband, a friend
Father and son who never come back home
      But who mourns for me?
And when my time is up
      Who will care then?
      They keep struggling
Does a soldier get a dignified end?
      Get to sleep
      Disappear
      And never wake up
      Because the war can,
      Destroy a man
I give my life for my motherland
      But who misses me?

In the non-combat zone, that is a large territory, they sublease apartments and push for work to the west, they will use anything to get rich and they are rude and play it to the whole west. Kind of like gypsies. Many people like you don't see it because they are out of touch and believe the propaganda. However, the reality is elsewhere.
