Well said.... I think the fact that so many of us still love them this long after their last broadcast shows just how great they were.... Come on Radio 2, get the boys back where they belong.
Just watched this and it brought a tear to my eye! What a team and what a great show!!! Loved them, they helped get me through the working day, Mint Vinyl and the Shed of dread were brilliant :-D
Come on now. DJs who combined real musical knowledge with humility and wit? We can't have that on R1 can we? BTW, anyone able to post some Harry White? The Vicar's bell end's still got a crack in it.
The only qualification for getting a daytime Radio 1 show these days is an affected regional accent, being extremely sycophantic and finding it hard to be objective about any music, TV or film. Here's to the "Biggest Show". Biggedy-biggedy-bong!!
Mark and Lard were beacons of genuine, intelligent, passionate talent in a Radio Land that's barren, stale, tawdry and full of fakers. Their graveyard slot show helped me through a really bad time and I was lucky enough to meet them at a special show in Birmingham. You boys are much missed. The word legend is bandied about far too much these days, but you are both worthy of the status xxx
Biggedy Biggedy Bong is my message tone on my mobile!! Kylie Minogue doesn't record jingles for just anyone you know!! I often listen to Mark Radcliffe with Stuart Macconie on radio 2 in the evenings, but... The chemistry between Mark Radcliffe and "the hapless boy Lard" was special. Same as many others - these two made a dull day at work sooooooooo much brighter!! NO NEED!!!
Mark & Lard: pure genius. The whole was definitely greater than the sum of its parts. With them gone, and the sad loss of John Peel, the sanitization of Radio 1 was complete. Now it`s just a shadow of its former self. BRING `EM BACK!
Too good for Radio 1. Used to listen to the graveyard shift and then the afternoon show whenever I could at work. Those 6 months on the Breakfast Show in the mid 1990s were just too good to last. Far too much for a mainstream audience on a morning! "Here's the new one from Kula Shaker 'Ginger Baker, bagel, tattva'". I wonder if they are still in possession of those points that Middlesbrough were deducted in the mid 90s? Anyone else remember 'fish or fowl'?
Classic unrehearsed commedy. They were the finest purveyors, and made radio worth listening to.My afternoons are empty now,but ill always have the memmories. Thanks Mark n Lard Morris Idle Is iT Worth Owt? Classic Cuts
Driving home on Christmas eve....Listening to the "best of" from the year...think it was 1998. I'll never forget that. The only radio show I have deliberately tuned in to regularly...Brilliant memories of a special time in my life. I havent bothered with Radio 1 since. "Is it a bird?...Is it a bloke?..How the ell should I know?....God am sorry a spoke. Is it a bloke?...is it a bird?...Have'nt a clue mate...how absurd"
Great show and sadly missed. Radio 2 should try to reunite these guys and get rid of Steve Wright, but I doubt that would happen because Radio 2 is far too conservative and /or it loves its TV presenters doing their radio programmes. 2004 was a shit year on Radio 1 with the loss of this show, John Peel, also the disappearance of Steve Lamacq 'evening session' & 'Lamacq live' shows. Oh and the irony of Zane Lowe when announcing he's going on holiday 'but dont worry, your in safe hands'.
@Hewster I was a big fan even from the "Doomed" breakfast shows.... As a feild service engineer getting to spend most of my day driving around the country, I too looked forward to 2pm - 4pm everyday as a break from the norm. A pair of great blokes who played quality music. The last time i ever heard Radio 1 play anything by The Clash was by these guys. Nothing has or will ever come close to those afternoons driving around the country.. :-(
Funniest thing on radio ever, can't believe anyone could think replacing them with colin & edith was a good idea! Someone at the bbc needs to have the sense to bring them back.
to be honest I think Chris Moyles is the second to last of a long line of greats at radio 1. When Zane Lowe leaves unless someone new comes along radio 1 is dead
fuck me man, i could shed a tear! this show and these guys are absolutely genius, massively missed, bowman is dirt man, absolutely gash, i hate the direction r1 is going in, i have to disagree with mjd though, moyles is good, he and his team are really funny, hes the last of the old generation almost though, his hands are becoming more tied and his show is getting worse because of that! however, mark and lard, WE LOVE YOU x how good would it be to have them make a comeback, we can but dream!
I think you`ll find that the last song they played on R1 was Crazy Crazy Nights by Kiss. No disrespect to Stuart Maconie or anyone else Radcliffe`s teamed up with, Marc `Lard` Riley will always be his perfect radio partner. Get these two back together again asap.
Pulled a sicky to listen to the last show. Sat looking out me window on a lovely sunny spring day with numerous cups of tea. And cried. Cried a cry of laughter and loss. And at the last "STOP!" Sat waiting for the carry on. I think they were the only people to get away with more than 2 minutes dead air on BBC ever. Seemed like a lifetime until the news kicked in. And like most people who enjoy quality music and top flight entertainment I've never listened to Radio 1 since. Bunch of arse!
radio w a n k ....one man and his frog the giddy hights of first division froging with knarrp this sprightly youngster aged 86...the best thing on r1 ever{jugde jules &tongy} found old tapes when working in alps a few years ago and played endlessly in kitcken for season cracked every body up missed still listen to mark and marcony they have there moments to ....no.neeeed
Did they really break-up with all smiles? There was a rumour that they had a bit of a bust-up and Radcliffe pretty much admitted that they had disgreements when he was intervied on the Jonathan Ross radio show back in 2004.
@@MarkPentler Mark Radcliffe said they no longer see each other on a regular basis but are cordial to each other on the rare occasions they see each other. Other than that you are correct - my question remains unanswered !
Totally with you hobbys9!! Mark Radcliffe and Lisa Tarbuck, just seem to work, due to both their comedy genius. But imagine Mark and Lard doing their bit.... it would be tremendous. We listen to radio 2 at work and I have no problem with that, but I too love it when Steve Wright is on his jollies and Mark steps in. Mark and Lard on an afternoon slot on Radio 2 would be awesome and brighten up many a dull working afternoon...... lets start a petition!!
***** Their evening show was superb (although Lard was not always there) - it consisted of a mix of sessions, poetry readings, film review with Mark Kermode & tonnes of good tunes.Sadly when they went to the Breakfast show they were forced to play a lot of chart music and their particular humour didn't go down to well - although as soon as it was announced their show was being axed they gained loads of listeners....
Hey, clubber1973. I made the film of Mark and Lard's last day for a show called Powerhouse. I had an in on Mark and Lard 'cos I was Patrick the studio audience and Dick the Buttock Scruttock, one of the Shirehorses. I also wrote Harry white plus other stuff for the show. In the film, when Moyles said they would always be broadcasting icons... he went on to say... 'but never as big as me', being the smart fucker he his. However, when I edited the film, I cut his smart remark out. Patrick
STOP......... carry on!! "Hello Mark".... we need these back on radio, working together NOW!! Their musical knowledge is top, their comedy value is top, the catchphrases are immense. Chris Moyles The saviour of radio.....????? I think not, by the way!! Mark and Lard - the FUTURE of radio... no need?? a definate need by the way!! Fat Harry White and his caravan of love is waiting..........!!
My God I thought it was just me who stopped listening to R1 when the Gods that are Mark and Lard went off air! How many listneners must they have lost?? Its about time they came back - their show was the only radio show in my life that I have ever set a timer for just in case i missed the start while i was at work...I would pay for them to come back myself , but i seem to me "ten pence short"....MMMMMMMMMMMmmmmmm Bayby!!!!!! ;)
@cystiq I didnt listen to the afternoon show so much just cos they were knowingly taking the piss and doing the same thing every day. I think I had a healtyier attitude to that show, I would dip in and out. the night time show tho, I'd listen every single day, to everty single minute
How brilliant were Mark and Lard and what makes it worse are the c list tv stars (edith bowman, fearne cotton, reggie yates, dick n dom etc etc) who fill up the airwaves with inane nonsense and they have less knowledge of music than Mark and Lard had in their little fingers.
The best show ever and duo for that matter.. I moved to NYC in June 2004 and had the Howard Stern show there which was every bit as good to be honest but since my return I can't believe the path R1 has gone other than moyles and co. who have there hands tied to be fair from wat they used to get away with in there evening show the station has gone totally gay!! The station has lost it's talent can't listen to any of the knobs on it now bring back mark an lardy boy!!!!
sum1 start a group on facebook, replace steve wright for mark and lard! i love it when steve goes on holiday and mark is on, take ya "big show" and piss off steve! its utter shite.
lmao why are people arguing? This is about the video not about your argument lol Anyway, Mark and Lard, you guys made my work life worth living :D:D xxx come back and CARRY ONNNN boohoo hehe
Best show on Radio ever..gutted when they left..I think I still am all these years later!

Such genius, have had so many great laughs with this show! All those afternoons back in Blighty after sixth form...
I miss Mark and Lard in the afternoon. :(
Great Video. They haven't and never will be replaced. Real broadcasting icons.

Mark and Lard were great, No one will cheer chris moyles like that on his last day, they may still cheer though...
The day Radio 1 died
Nearly 10 years!..never listened to Radio 1 since
Legends! I remember listening to colin and edith on the following monday and thinking..... fecking garbage, not fit to lace these fellas boots!

Simply the best radio show ever.
I loved the wine tasting. The Dagenham Rioja with a hint of Brasso. Such legends. Yes too good for R1.
Mark & Lard: pure genius. The whole was definitely greater than the sum of its parts. With them gone, and the sad loss of John Peel, the sanitization of Radio 1 was complete. Now it`s just a shadow of its former self. BRING `EM BACK!

@Neilo73 i hear ya, i too was a field service engineer at the time, i always prayed i'd get stuck on the m25 so i could listen the full show.

it was never a patch on their evening show....

I actually bloody cried for 2 minutes in my car at the end of this show and started listening to Radio 4 - a waste on so many levels.
All the good ones are gone!!!!!
Radio 1 just seems so banal and witless now when I look back and compare it to the days of Mark and Lard.
...Colin and Edith? Who were they?
i really miss these boys, they were a big part of my teenage years. why the hell has bowman got a show on her own for 3 hours?
was the highlight of the day stuck in a factory.. radio 1 has bottomed out,, same happened after simon bates & steve wright left!!!
such a sad day
I was truely gutted when the show ended. I got the first ever "back off the mic"
respec is due.
this was the day radio 1 officially went down the pan.
I agree, sadly missed . I WOZ 'AVIN A DRRINK THEN!!!!
