the 'word' - the 'sound' - the 'truth'.... 'sacred creation'.... another profound discussion - thank you both.

In India there are what are called sabar mantras, which are in the daily spoken language of that region. By this it is understood that mantras need not be only in sacred languages.

Amazing interview. THanks JEff for doing this since the 80s.
Love that you put up images of books and the persons spoken of so even a first timer can relate to new and unknown people.
Much love and respect from India, Namaste!

This conversation is both an academic and a spiritual treasure. Thank you for articulating the profundity of Mystic action that happens when one expresses a mantra. ♡ Which classes would be best to learn more like this?

Regarding the 32m30s mark (ramakrishna->vivekananda), any thoughts on Sadhguru that suggests "AUM" is the universal sound, and that a mantra should not have any meaning associated with it. The point is to get your body to vibrate and resonate with that of a higher dimension. He suggests that according to the Mandukya Upanishad, Aum Namah Shivaya / Brahmachari’s sadhana consciousness has 4 states which is the basis of the "AUM" mantra:
    waking state / jagrat ("A") ,
    dream / svapna ("U") ,
    deep-sleep dreamless state / prajna ("M"),
Chitta or pure consciousness / turya ("_")
See Sadhguru's chanting video for an example.. 'Shambho' Yoga Yoga Yogeshwaraya' chant for generating samat prana / ushna, Guru Paduka Stotram , Nirvana Shatakam / vairagya / brahmacharya, Brahma-Nanda Swaroopa / Swarupa Power of Shiva , Goosebumps 'Intense Chanting of Chidananda Rupa Shivoham Shivoham' , etc.
Or thoughts on Shiva Rea's Heart of Yoga, that combines Chant/Dance?
Dr. Dharma Singh Khalsa recommends the 'Kirtan Kriya' chant to help with Alzheimer's on the Dana Foundation video (see 22m mark)!
And Beverly Rubik suggests chanting out loud can affect the properties of the objects around, water, herbs, etc!
If one were to try to view this thru the lens of modern/western medicine, I wonder if some of the positive effects of humming/ sound baths / gongs / (bija) mantras / throat-singing, might be due to stimulation of the vagus nerve. ,
Finally, Dr. Kulreet Chaudhary recommends Shakti (ex. Joshua Barr's Om Namo Narayani from his Lakshmi Mantras album) , and mentions the following 'sound medicine' protocol:
Chant for 5 minutes for 3 days; then 10 minutes for 3 days; then 15minutes for 3 days; then 20 minutes each day thereafter, focusing one's awareness on the associated (chakra)
    Hari Om
    Nam, Lam (Root Chakra)
    Mam, Vam (Sacral Chakra)
    Sim, Ram (Solar Plexus)
    Vam, Yam (Heart Chakra)
    Yam, Ham (Throat Chakra)
    Shiva Om (Third Eye)
    Swaha

I'd like to see some discussion of the intersection of Vajrayana Tantra and Shaivist Tantra.

Mishlove says we forget where our word origins come from but I disagree. Majority of people are not taught the origins. How could we forget if we never knew in the first place.....

Did we begin with animal like speech? That's the theory of materialists normally.
