    This is the second in my 1916/2016 series. The Parting Glass takes it's melody from a 1782 tune called "The Peacock'.
    This beautiful Irish ballad has been covered by artists such as Ed Sheeran, The Clancy Brothers, Sinead O'Connor, The High Kings and many others. It even featured on an episode of AMC's The Walking Dead.
    Thanks for listening. Hope you enjoy.

    Hi Paul,
    I hope you do not mind my listing this new lyric on your comments ? The truth is I wanted to write this lyric but found so many versions here on youtube wandered off or added notes. But Not Yourself, I found your version Clear and Pure ~~~~~~ so made the lyrics that bit easier.

    I am also a great fan of this tune, and the piano version is very good. The first time I heard this song was, I believe decades ago in Minneapolis at a Claudia Schmidt concert at the Cafe Extemp, which dates me I guess. And of course I am sure she got it from an older recording and there have been versions going back many years. It makes the rounds. I think William Coulter plays it very well on the guitar, and I think as well Celtic Woman plays it or Lareen McKennitt, and many others of course. A review of youtube would surely turn up many other good versions.

    Of all the money that e'er I spent
    I've spent it in good company
    And all the harm that ever I done
    Alas it was to none but me
    And all I've done for want of wit
    To memory now I can't recall
    So fill to me the parting glass
    Good night and joy be with you all
    Oh, of all the comrades that e'er I had
    They're sorry for my going away
    And of all the sweethearts that e'er I had
    They'd wish me one more day to stay
    But since it falls unto my lot
    That I should rise and you should not
    I gently rise and I softly call
    Good night and joy be with you all
    If I had money enough to spend
    And leisure time to sit awhile
    There is a fair maid in this town
    That sorely has my heart beguiled
    Her rosy cheeks and ruby lips
    I own she has my heart enthralled
    So fill to me the parting glass
    Good night and joy be with you all

    I play this on whistle, and i go to play it in piano, but i cant figure out how to ornament it with chords.
    How do you figure out what chords do you play with the melody

    • @paulfaganpianist
      @paulfaganpianist  3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      So first I recognise that the melody follows a key..C minor (Aeolian mode but not as important). The notes of the scale are C D Eb F G Ab Bb. So now I'm going to build chords out of each note of the scale in turn. C (C Eb G), D (D F Ab), Eb (Eb G Bb) see the pattern? Now in this song, it turns out that chords based on C, Ab, Eb and Bb (from my scale) sound like a natural fit with the flow of the melody. How do I know? Because they sound good. How do I know where to place them? My ear just tells me. Trial and error with this and every song until you just become used to picking out chords. But knowing what the key is in the first place is crucial.

    • @paulfaganpianist
      @paulfaganpianist  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thanks for asking. At the time of recording, I had a Roland RD800 stage piano and it had the ability to layer strings on just the region of the piano I wanted. So I my left hand played piano and strings and right just piano.

    • @paulfaganpianist
      @paulfaganpianist  ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for your comment! It's in C Aeolian Mode which means that the scale is C, D, Eb, F, G, Ab, Bb, also known as C natural minor.

    LAST NIGHT I DREAMED A DREAM SO REAL
    THAT TRUTH AS LOVE IN LIFE SHOULD BE
    SO FILL THIS WORLD WITH LIGHT WITH HOPE
    THAT PEACE ON EARTH AT LAST SHALL BE
    SO IN THAT DREAM I FLEW AS A CLOUD
    MOVED IN THE WINDS AS FREE AS AIR
    THE SUN, MOON, STARS SHONE AS EVER STILL
    ALL CREATION THERE IN LOVE TO SHARE
    SO AS I WANDERED ON THRU THAT DREAM
    I KNEW A TRUTH A SECRET TRUTH FOR ALL
    THAT CREATION COMES FROM ONLY LOVE
    THAT EVILS MIGHT MUST EVER FALL
    BEYOND ALL DOUBT I KNEW THAT LOVE
    IS WHERE THE SOUL COMES SAFELY HOME
    THERE EACH OF US WILL FIND LOVES TRUTH
