Is this Cheap Fender Amp as Good as the Bandit 112?! The Fender Deluxe Plus 112

  • The Fender Deluxe Plus 112 amplifier is easily one of the best solid state amps I have ever played. I would put it on par with the Peavey Bandit 112 in terms of tone, volume, and versatility.

This is a really cool amp! I've been using it live the last week or so in San Francisco. I've also included a quick live jam at the end of the video too so you can hear it in the mix. Lemme know what you think. Cheers :-)

After watching this video for a couple years... I was scrolling on the GC site and saw one of these for $80. Pulled the trigger. When I plugged in the pots were super scratchy, pulled the chassis out of the cabinet hit the pots with Detox It D5, and plugged it back in, and WOW! One of the best Fender clean tones I have ever heard. Had to replace a broken jack which was very easy. I replaced the stock speaker with an Eminence Canibus Rex and it made nice improvements. I have been playing this amp every day for about a month now. It just keeps getting better. The drive channel has potential but the amp is best with pedals into the clean channel.
This is now my favorite amp and I have several nice low-watt tube amps. For Fender clean with reverb, it is better than any other solid-state amp I have ever played through. I have the Boss Katana MkII 100w which is great but the Deluxe 112 is much better for Fender clean. In a band setting, I don't think anyone would tell the difference between the Deluxe 112 plus with a Texas Heat or CR speaker and a real Fender DRRI for country clean. I know that is blasphemy but there I said it. I would love to see Shane do a blind comparison video between the Deluxe 112 with a CR speaker against a DRRI. I really think it would be close on the recording. In-person the DRRI would easily win due to the details you get from tubes of course. But in a country or blues band setting...?
I tried several speakers in this amp before landing on the CR. The G12H75 Cream back and the Eminence Alessandro ga-sc64 were both a bit too bright and revealing for the solid-state output. The Texas Heat was fantastic and rolled out any brittle feel but the CR speaker was magical with rays of heavenly light shining down on the amp with glorious notes pouring forth.
The trick with getting a great tone from the drive channel is adding a 100k ohm master volume pot which allowed the drive to be pushed without exceeding the local noise ordinances. This amp is very loud but sounds perfectly wonderful at bedroom practice levels. Schematics are available online for free download if you look. Just series the pot with the resistor in the circuit coming out of the power amp input going to the power amp section. Easy.
After discovering this miracle amp, I found a Fender Stage 112 SE for $90 locally. Same issues as the Deluxe 112 Plus, cleaned the pots and replaced several broken jacks, added the master volume and it is just as good (maybe better) as the Deluxe 112, just a LOT LOUDER!!! I installed a Texas Heat 4 ohm so I could get the full 160-watt amp output rating to the 150-watt speaker. I hope Eminence has a safety factor applied to their speakers because I am convinced the Stage 112SE amp can do a full 160 watts into 4 ohms. I have never heard anything that loud. I had foam earplugs in and OSHA-rated ear muffs on top of that and it felt like my teeth would rattle loose if I kept playing. Knocked all the pictures off the walls in the house and was raining flakes down from the ceiling. After about 30 minutes of playing power cords at full volume, the Stage amp heat sink was barely warm but the 150-watt speaker magnet was smoking hot. But it was fun!
Thanks Shane for discovering and sharing another fantastic find. I have owned many amps and other gear based on your recommendations such as the Peavey Bandit Red Stripes and Mustangs based on your reviews over the many years of watching. You provide a great service to the community! Thank you!

I used to play through a Fender Stage 112SE, which is a close cousin of that model. Super-loud (I think it was 160 watts), bulletproof, relatively inexpensive, and easy to dial in thanks to the contour control. A burst pipe in my basement took it out, but I got many years of faithful service out of it.

My gigging amp! Modded the drive section, but really only use the clean channel as a pedal platform. beautiful reverb, always this amp will cut through the mix on-stage ---0- but this is what Fender amps are good at. Compliments my scooped sound, I would get lost in the band sound if I used any of the typical heavy amps, seriously. I get sneers as a heavy player using Fender.... but then I get compliments after they get exposed to it for a bit.

I got one of those amps as payment for a repair I did some time ago for another guitarist. It was dead when I got it and I repaired it. It is a crazy loud amp. The specs say it is a 93 Watt amp at 4-Ohm load but I think it's actually more than that. If you use a volume pedal in the effects loop you can explore more of what you can get out of it. That's how I use it when I take that one to a gig. You can tame it down a tad by replacing the stock 4-Ohm speaker with an 8-Ohm speaker. I put an Eminence Swamp Thang in mine. The amp sounds way better with the Swamp Thang speaker than it does with the OEM Fender Special Design speaker it came with.

This was my first real amp. Got it slightly used when i was 15 with my own money in 1995 from Sam Ash in Queens, New York. It was and still is way too much for apartment use. It survived my teens, twenties, and 30's. It's seen better days cosmetically, but it's fine otherwise. I used to pick up police radio frequencies with it when I still lived in the city.

I got the "non plus" deluxe 112, 65 watt only vs 94 watt for the "plus", and it's punishing loud yet. The volume pot don't help: 90% at 2. And absolutly no compression so it's totally unforgiving. But a very nice clean with some bass cut . Very good pedal platform. The drive channel can be usable after some hours tweaking to understand it. Very reliable amps also. With a "amp in a box " pedal it may be the secret weapon for a gigging musician or as a spare amp. Very impractical as a practice amp.

Would be nice if you could play to my practise rig :) Just too far away from Germany.
At home i play a 25 Watt Frontman, modded to a top and a acoutronics spring tank. Connected to a 12" speaker in a modded Fender combo housing as a cabinet.
If you just listen and don't know from what kind of amp the sound comes, you can not imagine it's just a 130$ rig with a quality Celestion speaker (wich was the priciest part of the rig)
I only juge amps by the clean sound. I only play clean or a bit crunchy using a pedal.

Hi Shane - great channel! I have been listening for several years now, and you've helped me make many good purchase decisions. This video made me check out some of Fender's SS amps from the 90s and early 2000s and I ended up buying a Stage 100 which is newer than the Deluxe Plus 112 but is a similar technology platform called "DynaTouch." The Stage 100 sounds similar to me to the Deluxe Plus 112. I wonder if you have played anything from Fender's Dyna Touch series. I have gotten to a point where I don't see a point in whether an amp is tube or solid state - both have examples of great amps, and it's the overall design of the amp and speaker rather than the details that matter.

Fender broke the SS Barrier. Why they never built upon it is a true mystery. I found a D 112 closet king
that was a showroom left over. Cleaned it up, cleaned all the pots and put in a Cannabis Rex. What
transpired was a miracle. Better than any BF or SF Deluxe or Twin Reverb. Why Fender ignored the
technology in this incredible amp will never be known. But this SS amp truly competes with any
tube amp out there. I feel fortunate to have found one in pristine shape.

This was the first amp I ever bought. The gain channel dimed is all sorts of Pantera-y goodness.
This was one of those amps that everyone I knew assumed it was a tube amp, & then after I told them it was a tube amp they could all magically, suddenly, hear the tone difference. Such snobs. I've move a long way past it in my playing, but it was a fantastic amp to begin with.
Though if you (or someone else on stage) stamped, or stepped to heavily next to the amp the reverb would go haywire... which could be used as a weird effect

    Thanks for your reviews.
This is a great review of the fender amp in particular.
As a result of your reviews you have put amps on my shopping list that I now have.
The Fender Deluxe 112 is awesome 😎 as is the Roland Blues Cube Hot.

It's always had a following by those "in the know"! Owned one and sold to a friend. Picked up a Champion 40 last year and put in a Jensen C12N. Huge volume gain and sounds kind of similar but with more versatility. Both under-estimated amps IMO.

Ah, the memories. My two best friends started guitar very soon after I did. They got over their Squire starter packs pretty quick and the two combos they got were a Bandit 65 and a Deluxe 112. I found my own Bandit 65 not too long after. Jon used the Deluxe 112 through high school and college and actually used it for his graduation recital. I remember his clean tone from this making me want a Fender of my own, and at the time, the Cyber Twin was the new hot Fender. Eh. I wish I could have found another one of these!
Ridiculously loud, and the drive channel wasn't bad either!

Just got one. thanks for the tip, Shane! The thing is really, really loud! I'm impressed. Definitely not for home practice.
It has an amazing sound for a solid state amp indeed... but unfortunately not as good as a Fender tube amp. Well... you get what you pay for. Its such a bargain! And weights half of a Twin Reverb! I think maybe its better suited for jazz semi-hollow guitars because of its sharp, precise tone. But you can always sweet the things up with its good spring reverb or with a low gain overdrive pedal. By the way... the drive channel is not bad at all: really good for rock and roll sounds with bridge position pickups.

Great review- I've not even heard of these amps. That sounds fantastic, and huge through my laptop speakers. My whole computer was vibrating, lol! I'll have to look into this, as I need a replacement for my Mustang III V1, which now has a dodgy power amp... Got plenty of pedals, and I now know what sounds I like, so no need for a million models or on board effects.

JUST PICKED UP THIS AMP. Amazing sound for the weight & size. 33 lbs 94 w . Ok for your bad backs to lift . Pretty close in sound to my fender stage 185 112 47 lbs 160 w. A great little straight forward simple AMP. JUST ADD YOUR PEDALS & PLAY. Smashing. THANKS FOR THE TIP. JB

I got one of these after watching the video. its my number one gigging amp. I put my lap steel in channel 1 and my fender lone star deluxe in channel 2. Gain at 3 and I use the volume on the guitar to control the drive.
No need for overdrive or distortion pedals with this amp

Other than the Fender champion 100, that is the best solid state amp I have ever heard from Fender. I keep looking for one on eBay, but so far no luck! Have you ever tried the Fender Cyber series? they made a 65 watt 112 and a 120 or 130 watt? 212 with robot knobs. Kind of a gimmick but the tones available are anywhere from tweed and black face through Marshall and even Vox. Amazing amps!
BTW, the deal with Tonerider pickups is going through, and production of my own line of electric guitars is also going forward. I'll send you a T type. Bob in Germany

Just picked up one of these for 100 bucks. Never been so happy with $100 amplifier, I’m thinking about getting rid of my fender tube amp and I know that sounds crazy but that’s how good this amp is. A lot lighter as well, I’m up in my 60s and gravity is working really well these days.
I should mention in all fairness, part of the reason I would consider getting rid of my supersonic 22, is that I can get all the overdriven tones I need off my Pedal board.

The type of pots Fender used for volume control(s) increased volume in the lower ranges precipitously (I don't recall if they were linear and should have been log, or vice versa). After about 4-5 on the dial, it doesn't increase in absolute level all that much. What's even more amazing is that the generic OEM Eminence made speaker was (in my opinion), not all that great -- certainly not very efficient..A quality guitar speaker with a decent efficiency rating would really improve it greatly. Try swapping the speaker out for a good one and see how much new life that breathes into it.
I used to own the exact same amp -- and I loved it! For crunch or tube break-up, I put a BK Butler Real Tube in front of it and it sounded amazing. That series of Fender SS amps take pedals very, very well. I wish Fender would make a similar amp now -- or, even better, as a separate amp head.
      Enjoy your amp!
