Love seeing the subscriber count higher every time I watch a video. It’s very well deserved. This is the gold standard of electronic music tutorial content on TH-cam.
Sir, you have basically given us the lesson that all plugin manufacturers should be providing, when they release a new vst! You’ve gone down to the DNA level and made it feel like playing with play dough! Bravo!! 🙌 🍻 🍻
That tip with the second oscilator in vital for using it as a "distortion" is pure gold. I was chasing this Champion-specific sub bass sound for ages with different type of distortions and whatnots and wooomp there it is! So bloody easy, unbelievable :D
Brilliant tutorial, absolutely love this style - I don't want a full patch I just want to know what is most crucial to create these different types of sounds so I can go off and experiment myself. Thank you!!
One thing to be mindful of with FM is that your patch can vary wildly in timbre/harmonics if you don't turn down the phase randomisation on the oscillators used. Thank you for another great vid, always learn something new!
Jesus bro, what an explanation. You are so thorough with everything, appreciate the efforts and energy! Subscribed and always waiting for more videos knowledge! Thanks
I covered a little dnb in the "how to drop" video. But yeah I'll definitely be doing a video on dnb , I'd like to discuss British vs American approaches especially now badadan has gone viral
Been to a few festivals this summer and everyone is going crazy when "Diffrent - A little closer" gets played. Would love a tutorial on how to create that bass sound!
It's an m1 organ sample and then drops with Reese bass. It's clear that's H20 and platinum's "what's it gonna be" was the reference there. (Well that and a hundred other speed garage tracks of the 90s) I have covered organ bass before, if you don't know how to make a Reese just turn up the unison on a filtered saw!
Would it be possible to get a part 2 to this video? I'd LOVE to see a recreation of the bass from Sammy Virji & 33 Below - Dub It In, absolutely infectious.(Also it would be really helpful to see the midi for the basslines)

I do plan on offering that at some point, But I would need my own sample pack and be using them in tutorials. it's illegal to redistribute samples and instruments that aren't mine so right now the sessions would be midi only.
You are the man thank you so much! What would you recommend I do to get better at making sounds as someone who is new to sound design and interested in making music? (Besides watching your channel lol)
I think it comes down to a few factors. - 1st get an ear for the basic waveforms. (Not what comes in modern synths ) I talk about this in the Night Blooming Jasmin Video , th-cam.com/video/CQpG8RMNVyE/w-d-xo.htmlsi=_eYfRTsAJw7e-I6D - 2nd know what synths are capable of so you can detect that in other sounds. (Check out either of my synth tutorials) - 3rd likewise, get used to listening for what real sounds are, and which cannot be synthesized (by typical methods), like guitars , flute, mallet, etc etc. 4th try to develop an ear for the difference between tonal content and noise. All sound is made up a fairly predictable harmonic series of pitched tones, sometimes combined with an element of undetectable pitch, or noise. If you can spot this it can help you recreate sounds easier. I can't think of any others but I didn't go through any formal method or training, it just comes with time like all music skill. Putting in the hours trying to recreate your favourite tracks will get you there eventually. Know that your early attempts won't be great but failing is a bigger lesson usually so be humbled and keep moving on to new attempts you'll get there.
Hi Bthelick, I wanted to suggest a video idea. Me and many others would love to see your process when studying a song/genre to identify a technique, implement it, etc. Love your videos keep it up!
yes definitely happening. In the last video on finishing tracks I mentioned sessions where I "make plots". and many seemed interested. As always the hard bit is trying figure out what I can pass on that isn't just "put your 10,000 hours in" haha
What version of Vital are you on? My 1.08 says your presets were made with a newer version of Vital. Edit: just get the latest public early access release.
@ ahaha nah man I got a quick question I got an organ synth that sounds mint but I can’t have it playing at the drop(it’s a garage track)I’m trying to just have the low end playing but make it sound nice if you know what I’m saying I’m kind of stuck
Legend, I should have known its "808s" and house. although what you call house sounds like funk to me rather, but that's perhaps explained by the writing part :)
Great stuff as always, thank you! Question: I see lot of attention given to length of kick and can hear/feel difference when you shorten it from e.g. 800 ms to 250 ms..from thump to click. But not much attention to length of bass notes. Should there be a difference in note length for the 40-60Hz (thump) notes vs the 80-120 (tone)?
The 2 interact, so shorter kicks allow for longer bass notes. But the decision is a groove one, not length per frequency. It should be based on how you want the listener to dance! I have observed garage, like drum n bass tends to have shorter kicks that sit above the bass frequency wise, making the bass the lowest element. It's normally the other way round for house/ techno etc. Makes sense, it is a 'bass music' genre
its a sample from many a jungle track it comes from a "dub siren". they were home made devices that acted as hype noises in Dub & Jamaican sound system culture. basically a single osc synth with pitch permanently tied to an lfo. I don't actually know the name of the sample or where it's from, I remade this one in vital, I'll give it away in the garage keys video coming up 👊
Here It's not from 1 note, it's by re triggering the notes. If you want to wub from holding 1 note you will need to send an LFO to the filter. If you don't know how to I have a video th-cam.com/video/3jvsNGYzx74/w-d-xo.htmlsi=WQur0kePc4u_pTUj
