OMFG!!! I remember this game on the Playstation. For years I've been trying to remember what classic PSX game I remember playing during my childhood (this and Einhander), but now you brought it back from my childhood!!! o7
Gecko 1993 It should do. Sharp X68000 was comparable to CPS-2 technology, whereas later Neo Geo titles such as Last Blade, Metal Slug 3 and Garou: MotW show us the true capabilities of the machine which are almost CPS-3 level.
The cpu in the FM Towns Marty and the Neo-Geo aren't directly comparable. the Neo-Geo uses a 16-bit M 68000 cpu, while the FM Towns Uses a 32-bit AMD 386SX processor.
Nah, the Neo Geo version is way better. It's two players at once, it has no load times, the FM Towns version runs at the wrong resolution, and you can always just overclock the CPU in MAME's Neo Geo driver if you want to reduce slowodnw. It's better than the Towns version in every single way.
@@0rderSol Neo CD is just recorded music on a CD. The actual NEO GEO cartridges are better I reckon. I always felt like it was cheating by sticking music on a CD.
I dont know, personaly I would just stick the the arcade/neo geo version. The Playstation version is a bit too 90s corperate EEEEXXXXTTTTREEEEEEMMM!!!! for me.
HaidesTunicaRoja The Neo Geo, the system that Viewpoint was originally created for, also uses similar 68000-based architecture to both the Mega Drive and the Sharp X68000. Like I said, the X68000 was the closest thing to the Neo Geo in homes at the time, so there was no reason for the X68000 version to turn out worse than the FM Towns version, which runs on a different architecture.
+Razor Edge I understand what you're saying, however, in terms of pushing sprites, handled by each system's custom video chips, the X68000 is not as powerful as the Neo Geo, and the FM Towns is more powerful than both. maximum sprites: X68000: 128 Neo Geo: 380 FM Towns: 1024 While specs don't mean everything, they are a baseline for what programmers have to work with.
You should disable frameskip on your emulators. That's why some game objects disappear for a second or two, like the firewall weapon on the Neo Geo. I've noticed it in your other videos too.
It was the 90's. Everything was chrome! XD Also, while the Sharp X68000 appears to suffer from slowdown-- The Genesis version seems the weakest, with sprite overload. There was a moment there where enemy bullets were disappearing! O_o FM Towns sacrifices the least, unsurprisingly. >_>
The Mega Drive conversion would be visually the poorest yet it can be very entertaining. The FM-Towns is the closest to the original. The Playstation version is also fun. Contrary to many people I don't think the x68K could have done any better than the FM-Towns in this particular case. The FM-Towns clearly had superior hardware specs even if it couldn't handle as many sprites. Its CPU was faster and it had more RAM. I had a x68K here for a couple years. It was a grey ACE-HD expanded to 12Megs and a CF-Card for the hard disc. It went to another home one month ago. It's a very good system albeit a tad on the unpractical side and I deem what most people think of it as a huge myth. It's also a very expensive way to play retro games. I could simply insert a cartridge in a much cheaper Mega Drive or SNES and play a game that is as good as the x68K version if not better, maybe with some irrelevant differences like a few display lines off. The fun and gameplay is what counts for me. Anyway I know if one collects these things, price does not always come into the equation. I have some classic equipment here that doesn't do much beyond blinking a green cursor and I love it. It's just that I think the x68K is way overrated for what it offers, that's all.
+Wilton Abreu Really The X68K is one of the greatest ever machines for near arcade perfect ports. I in fact sold my SNES and PS1 and MD to get one, best decision I made. It was a fantastic machine that deserved to revered more.
It's sad that the PlayStation version had such horrible music, because had the PlayStation just kept the music that the NeoGeo had, and perhaps made it using real instruments, the PSX version would have been the best version around as the graphics and color use was outstanding for this conversion.
I just don't understand WHY the Genesis/MD ports took so much time to release! They had more than enough time to make much superior versions between 1990 and 1994-5...
Genesis/MD version and X68000 versions were made by the same company, Nexus Interact. I can consider both versions are the worst. FM Towns is CLEARLY close to the Arcade/Neo Geo version. PSX version is a remake from the ground-up.
There's nothing wrong with the resolution of X68K version (in fact, it's the same). If it weren't for some slowdown, this would be the most faithfull version overall to the original Viewpoint.
at the time I believe I was having issues running the emulator for it. It was glitching & there was no sound. I struggled with it for a week before I finally gave up. Same issue with other emulators as well. :(
Funny how people say other versions are better than the original NeoGeo version. The MD/Genesis version is a commendable and playable port with slowdown, to help with dodging bullets. The FM Towns version is near perfect, but too fast!
I don't think the Genesis version turned out all that bad to be honest. The PS1 version just seems wrong. The atmosphere isn't Viewpoint that's for sure.
Better to be arcade perfect FUJITSU FM TOWNS Perfection to digitalization of the music THE MODERN ONE SONY PlayStation Due to modernise music and graphics And has a Opening.. Great..
OMFG!!! I remember this game on the Playstation. For years I've been trying to remember what classic PSX game I remember playing during my childhood (this and Einhander), but now you brought it back from my childhood!!!

WOW! I can't believe the X68000 Sharp got uberly pwned by the NeoGeo!

The FM towns version is the best version in fact, it has no lag unlike the neo geo version
The fm towns had 16 mhz, the neo geo only 12
The cpu in the FM Towns Marty and the Neo-Geo aren't directly comparable.
the Neo-Geo uses a 16-bit M 68000 cpu, while the FM Towns Uses a 32-bit AMD 386SX processor.

@@youtubesuresuckscock You sure about every single way? The Fm Towns version does the soundtrack more justice than Neo-Geo CD.
@@0rderSol Neo CD is just recorded music on a CD. The actual NEO GEO cartridges are better I reckon. I always felt like it was cheating by sticking music on a CD.
Love games with that 3D petspective! :-)
Well, I was going to track down the Mega drive version... but after this I think the PS1 port is a better bet. Nice work as always Wingnut. :)
I dont know, personaly I would just stick the the arcade/neo geo version. The Playstation version is a bit too 90s corperate EEEEXXXXTTTTREEEEEEMMM!!!! for me.
Kristina I'm sure plenty think that too.
Amazing seeing the strengths and weaknesses of the different platforms on this one.
To be fair, the X68000 port was running on hardware that was already 8 or so years old at the time it was released.
+Christopher Sobieniak an x68000 processor, like the mega drive, i don t have the specifications, but they got a similar structure, haven t they?
HaidesTunicaRoja I think so.

Exellent as always!

One of the most difficult shmups for the neo-geo,damn good sound track though ^_^
The PSX version has, hands down, the most creative Dev/Pub intro, ever. (Which is not entirely shown)
It was the 90's. Everything was chrome! XD
Also, while the Sharp X68000 appears to suffer from slowdown--
The Genesis version seems the weakest, with sprite overload. There was a moment there where enemy bullets were disappearing! O_o

Reminds me of Zaxxon, except you can only go side to side.
Really neat. Never heard of this shmup.
Across all versions one thing remains the same: Viewport has the bumpinest soundtrack on any system it appears on.
The Mega Drive conversion would be visually the poorest yet it can be very entertaining. The FM-Towns is the closest to the original. The Playstation version is also fun.

PS1 version is more of an "HD Remix' type of version, but I think it looks and sounds the best.
Probably the music. I noticed the music doesn't even change when you meet the boss.
Love the updated visuals, though!
i just ordered it for my AES I am super stoked!
The original neo geo is an underrated gem. The PS1 remake is underrated and hated for the wrong reasons. Fm Towns was close to arcade.

i have never heard of 'fm towns' or 'sharp 68000' systems before
About the PSX sound issue: Why isn't this considered fair use? League of Extraordinary Layers for Great Justice, we need you!
Did you know that I am a MASTER at the Genesis version?
yeah I did know.. Quite disturbing since I have no clue who you are. 0_0
wingnut4427 You shouldn't know.
Why no Neo Geo CD Version ;-)
Its a great port on the NGCD with CD music and only a single introductory load.
at the time I believe I was having issues running the emulator for it. It was glitching & there was no sound. I struggled with it for a week before I finally gave up. Same issue with other emulators as well. :(
Gaming History Source Shame cause its a very nice simple CD port over, and is very reasonably priced... unlike the MVS & AES carts lol :-)
Have no idea what "FM Towns" is supposed to be. Is that some kind of computer?
The Genesis version is pretty impressive given the hardware.
How'd they mess up the x68000 version so badly?
Funny how people say other versions are better than the original NeoGeo version. The MD/Genesis version is a commendable and playable port with slowdown, to help with dodging bullets. The FM Towns version is near perfect, but too fast!

Zaxxon on steroids.
I think You got that the other way around. Sammy bought Sega in 2004 for 1.4 Bill. Google: Sammy Buys Sega in $1.5 Billion Take-over
thanks ! ^_^
There's something wrong with your capture card. It's not showing the Neo•Geo's flawless frame rate. Nothing comes close to Sammy/SNK's masterpiece.
This is an old video. Made before TH-cam had a 60 fps choice.
Better to be arcade perfect
FUJITSU FM TOWNS
Perfection to digitalization of the music

My god that sounds SO horrible on the Genesis =l
also that weird playstation music...huh...
Loll think the neo-geo and play station version of viewpoint are better
Sammy? It means Sega owns it now. Good since looks like a Zaxxon rip-off .

7:20 Ristar called. He wants his voice samples back!
A lot of those "samples" where packaged with the sega creation kit developers received upon making games. A lot of games have the same sounds and such
Garrett Wilson Yeah, I know. That explains quite a bit about Sega Genesis titles and the music the developers produced.
