Overall my first impressions are that I think the plate from Jarrod and the convex honing system was fun. It did change how the razors felt when shaving, but I did not notice a difference in performance. Would recommend trying an edge from Jarrod before trying out the method at home. If I were recommending a set up, it would be shapton rockstar stones 3k, 6k, 10k, and a Dan's surgical black.
Feel free to leave a comment if you want another video on the subject.
If interested in the Escher, you can find me on Badger and Blade, my name there is Christian1212.

Nice honing. I agree with you, if you can hone a keen razor, a convex stone won’t change that. It is an easy, quick way to hone, easy way for a beginner to get an outstanding edge.

there is a reason the best sharpeners in the world aka japan etc dont switch sides everytime. and if youre not seeing material from the stone then youre not putting the right pressure on it

Who voted or gave them the best sharpener in the world award? I just sharpen edges to shave with, and get great results this way. There are many different methods that work. Stone size, object being sharpened, and steel type can all change what method works best and all of that can be based on the user of said equipment.

I'm a fan of the DMT D8ME/EE plate, Porcelain honing rod, and a lthick leather strop worked with 10k polish myself.
I've heard a quick stropping on linen or similar before shaving can make the shave more enjoyable as well, but haven't tried it yet.
(I'm lazy enough that I generally just dry shave with one of my edc or utility folders though, so clearly I have no class 😉) Guessing the linen might provide somewhat of a burnishing, maybe?

Linen helps clean the edge and can be a little more aggressive than the leather. However the steel and bevel angles are going to be different than an EDC and give a different result. Shaving with an EDC sounds like a lot of work, should try out DE shaving.

@@ChrisDaBOSS7 I picked up a cheap straightedge a few weeks back to try it out and find if it had much difference, but it had such a poorly ground edge. Temu, so not surprising, I suppose...
I was sporadically working on fixing it, I just need to get my posterior in gear... Got it 'razor sharp', enough to shave with, but haven't quite reached that buttery smooth, consistent, hair-whittling keen...
Thanks for the clarification on the linen 😉

@stferret can check out badger and blade for more information on straights. Can be a few different things you need to check for a good razor edge. Steel is pretty important as well - would check out griffith shave goods if looking for a quality razor.

I don't know if you intended to sharpen/hone unevenly but, at least 25% of the time you were just sharpening the lower half straight across and the rest of the time you'd go on an angle from bottom to top. So if the lower half gets used/blunted >25% more than the rest of the blade I suppose that's fine - otherwise why?

I hone a lot based on feel, so sometimes different areas will get hit more. On a slim stone it is a bit more noticeable. Once all parts of the razor start feeling the same on the stone I am happy with the result. On the thin stone you will see this when my X stoke is only working 1 portion of the razor. If my bevel ever has an uneven scratch pattern I will return to the stone.
Also important to note! You don't shave with every part of your razor evenly. So it is always good after initial bevel to make sure the whole edge looks and cuts nicely.

I have been using convexed shapes to restore heavily worn vintage razors and it has made a big difference taking off that extra material. Not only for honing being easier to sharpen, but the increased keenness of the edge.
I would like to send you a razor so I can try your esher edge. I have a couple of very small stones that the edge is not that great. And I am curious if it is the grade of stone or my technique. Let me know if you would like try one of my edges in exchange.
Thanks for sharing you findings with the convex honing.

I don't have a lot of wedges but could see that being useful. Would check with BB for someone to give you an Escher edge (they are all very similar from my experience). Shipping to my area can take longer than normal. If you do still want to try it though from my Escher or other stones send me a message on BB. Cheers

It would be nice to see you try the 6” all the way from bevel set to finish… I remember honing 6” 25” to flat but if I can I try using 6” all the way now it’s the most aggressive form. I was able to shave no tug with my 1.5 😂 cutting power felt awesome the face feel for the next 2 days wasn’t

I'm way too lazy to lap a finisher to the 6' radius haha. All of my testing so far has just changed the feel of the razor, but not the cutting power. Maybe the Escher test will be a bit different though since it doesn't get as sharp. My other naturals can get the edge very sharp so maybe I just haven't noticed the cutting performance difference. My aftershave feel has been within the normal ranges as well so far.
