I'm applying for summer internships, more specifically UX roles - so thank you for this! I really would love another video further explaining how to really stand out from the pile!

This is an awesome video Charli! I work in media and a lot of this advice applies to roles in my industry too. When I was applying for my current role, I spent a lot of time creating a hierarchy of my published work that fit with the work I expected to do at the company and it paid off! Selling yourself as a candidate in a way that makes it easy for the hiring manager to see your talents is so underrated. Cannot sing the praises of demonstrating excellent written communication enough: being able to pen succinct emails and slack messages makes a HUGE difference in a fast-paced role, even without remote work.
Solid advice and thanks for sharing your tips. I have made all the mistakes you've mentioned and made major adjustments when applying for roles. One that helped me is tailoring your work or website to the company. Standing out is so important in a very competitive industry. A smallish percentage of applicants will be doing this already and going the extra mile. So if you could make this extra step, you will raise the bar. Depending on the size of the company, there could be less competition elsewhere and if you go the extra mile you will increase your chances.
absolutely! I think its well worth the time to apply for less jobs and spend longer on each individual application, than to spend all your time applying for as many as possible
This is great advice for a lot of creative positions, since a writer should have a portfolio; a composer or musician will need to provide samples of music; actors, directors, and other film or stage people will need samples of their work; and a dancer will need to show their dance skills. Yes, musicians, actors, and dancers usually do actual auditions, but that doesn't mean they shouldn't keep recordings of their best performances. Even a copy editor or proofreader will want to provide before and after case studies of projects they have worked on, and book and news editors need to at least have a list of the publications they've worked on. Heck, even my husband (a computer engineer) has a resume that lists projects he's worked on--basically a portfolio!

Another thing is how you got your current job (not sure if you've talked about it already) and if you were applying for it now how you would do that! PS look for international postings too, not just UK or US please!

What I meant also with visual was that it always helps if we can also read something on screen while you talk for example, like bullet points or a simple diagram etc. to underline what you are talking about. Though the video i make will be about design positions in particular, hopefully you'll be able to apply my system for pulling out the core points of a job description to data analyst roles! I'll make that video soon.
this is a very infuriating process, despite completely rebuilding my online portfolio, making custom cover letters per application, 4+ years of experience, and a freakin masters degree; i still cant get a callback on most of my applications that are all entry level design positions. thanks for the tips charlie, only thing i havent tried was the custom website per application, that person really put in a lot of extra effort.

Charli I really really want to give up on design. Literally no one is hiring junior designers anymore and any job roles that say "entry-level" actually require years of experience. I'm really frustrated and disappointed.

yes! there are entry-level jobs that don't require experience, and if you already have 5 projects you could even land a junior role. internships are a great way to get experience but they aren't the only path into tech!

Enthusiasm for the creator industry was definitely a plus! But we weren't necessarily looking for someone who had designed for that target audience before.
Much more useful than a lot of generic tips you see floating around 👏

5-10 is PLENTY. Your portfolio should be a curated showcase of your best work, not an archive of every single thing you’ve ever worked on.
