This fly really worked for me the other day. The wind was calm and the water is very clear on my lake. I fished with my Rio hover line in the weedbeds in 7ft of water. My water temps were 56 deg already. Thank you Phil 👍
Hi, thanks for the kind words. I think a balanced scud or a variation that you can fish both balanced and cast and retrieved is a distinct possibility. :) Cheers, Phil
I hope the people of BC recover from the terrible loss they have encountered due to the recent and ongoing flooding. I'm sure humbled from what I saw. I hope the government compensate those families.
Nice tie. My scuds are very similar scepter I use a shellback on mine. Have you ever tried ostrich herl? I’ve made some very quick and nice looking scuds using ostrich herl for the body. The nice thing about using herl is that that there is no need for dubbing, or a dubbing loop plus very little trimming is needed because normally the fibers are the right length.
Hi Dale, I am glad you enjoyed my video. I skip the shellback on smaller patterns as I find simple easy to tie patterns seem to work best. I do use shellbacks on my larger scuds. I also use ostrich herl too. It is one of my favourite tying materials, not only for scuds but for other patterns too including micro leeches and mayfly nymphs. I have another scud pattern featuring ostrich herl that I will be releasing in the new year. Cheers, Phil
Thanks, I am pleased to hear that you enjoyed my tying video. Yes, you could easily adapt this pattern for rivers and streams. You might have to add some weight in the form or a lead substitute underbody or bead. Cheers, Phil
Thanks for taking the time to post your comment. I realize trot and other fish take our flies rather than eating them. It is just a popular turn of phrase. Cheers, Phil
Fly Patterns For Stillwaters was one of my first books I bought waaaaaaay baaaaaaack in the day! Good book.
Cheers Phil in 2024
Thanks Dale,
It had a good run. Over 20 years before it went out of print. Time for something new perhaps? 🤔

Phil, very clever pattern. Do you think it might have some potential in a stream environment?

What would be a good substitute for the midge flash tail
Hi Bryon, you could substitute a variety of materials including a tuft of Ice Dub, Angel Hair, standard Krystal Flash or Flashabou.

@@PhilRowleyFlyFishing thanks
Trout don’t ‘eat’ flies. They aim to, but the angler foils their plan. Fish ‘take’ a fly.
