It's over 600 pages long and I'm only about halfway done. Of course the language is horrible, but it was written in the 1800s so it's not the author's fault, and I guess the period-typical sexism is also excusable. But it's very hard to connect with any of the characters, mainly because 1) maybe I have a problem but personally I don't find the wheat trade of the early 1800s' Austro-Hungarian Monarchy a particularly engaging topic, 2) the protagonist is an about 30 years old man, who falls in love with a girl who is 13 when the book starts! He daydreams about how beautiful she is, he is always around her, and when she turned 15, they got married! As far as I have gotten in the novel they don't make love, only kiss, but it's still disgusting. Oh, and did I mention that we are supposed to like said protagonist because he has done so much good and basically never lies? There are only four characters I genuinely care about, two of them are a single mother and her daughter living on an island kinda as peasants/traders, the other two are their pets, a newfoundlander dog called Almira and a white kitten called Narcissza. The others could die of ebola for all I care (alright, maybe the girl in the marriage shouldn't because she's a victim and also innocent to a point where it becomes stupidity, but it's hard to actually like her because she barely even tries to stand up for herself, she's just a punching bag). And due to some ungodly reason, this is supposed to be one of my nation's greatest books ever. Basically everyone in high school has to go through this. If the goal is to make students loathe reading it's working beautifully, otherwise it's pure bullsh*t. At least crackfics like this were never supposed to be serious. Sorry for my bad English, I'm still learning, and thank you if you have read this rant I wrote on the bathroom floor at 1:45 am.

I have no problem doing this as school stuff because well, it was important and necessary to learn. But I mean, if a person don't work in the field and is the type of person who only read to boast about how cultured they are I think they're missing the point that literature is also entertainment.
