I watched an interview in why he left the show and turns out he'd always made sure it was purely about skill and ability, but the History Channel started interfering, telling him to let people who had been disqualified for whatever reason to be allowed to continue because they wanted certain people to win, so he left rather than do that.

Please, please, lease look up Ryu and where he is now. I just read the Brute de Forge article on him that was written last year (suggest everyone to read it). The guy was homeless, living in the woods, and "borrowed" his friend's back yard for his forge because they couldn't film in the forest. That's why the fire dept was called: the neighbors weren't used to some guy making swords in their community and got scared.
And he didn't even use the winnings on himself! He went back to the Philippines and went to villages that still relied on blades for work, and taught them how to work the metal properly, and got them equipment they needed. This guy is a saint and I respect the hell out of him.
He's doing very well for himself and has learned a lot since he was on the show. He never had a proper teacher, he's completely self taught and worked with what he had available to him. That's why he didn't use a lot of the power tools: He just didn't know how to utilize them properly and didn't want to waste his 3 hours trying to learn, so he used what he had a basic grasp on and ignored the rest. I'm pretty sure him using the hammer machine was him testing how it worked, and when it messed up the blade he was "alright, I tried it and it didn't go well. Back to basics".
If I ever get a decent cash flow in my life, I want to get one of his blades. It'll be a wait though because he's apparently got a years backlog of orders! Happy for him.

I worked for my local paper, and last year, I covered a knife show at the neighboring town. One of the vendors had a sword that was featured on this show, and when they pretentiously asked if I had seen it, they got flustered when I said no. That's small-town "fame" for ya.

I actually used to watch this show when it first came out. The show was initially just like you showed, with skilled blademakers (10+ years experience) competing in a forge, etc. The later seasons get a little looser. They start getting really inexperienced smiths and add all kinds of twists, like forcing them to work outside with a coal forge when most of them have only worked with gas, or making them search through a pile of scrap metal to forge their blades. The quality quickly slid.

A while ago i couldnt figure out what to watch on netflix so i tried the 'random' button and it gave me this show. I love this show, it's insanely good. I passed by it in my 'suggestions' so many times because i thought it was going to be stupid af. Glad netflix decided to be like "LOOK AT THIS SHOW YOU NIMROD!!!"
Side note: It's actually KEAL (Keep everyone alive), if anyone is wondering why they are allowed to say 'kill'

This show actually got me into blacksmithing, I made my first canister Damascus billet today. Which took me like 7 hours to but the can together, heat it up set the wealds and grind the can off. How they can do all of that stuff in 5 hours is beyond me lol. I do love the over the top host that was Wil and the crazy tests.

I'd like you to take a look into an old show I loved when I was little called The Chamber. Each contestant had to answer questions while subjected to fire, ice, water, winds, ext. while strapped into a chamber. They had a device on them that alerted the people on the show if the contestants needed to stop.

In fact, i've seen multiple times they've actively helped one another during the competition.

There was a first season episode that made me laugh so hard. There was a early twenty-something white guy that was full Japanese weaboo; in traditional robes, headband, Japanese-style tools, and spent all the intro talking about the superiority of Japanese bladesmithing over anything from the west. His blade was utter crap and he was drummed out in the first round. 😆

One running gag we have from this show is "getting commended". If your knife is completely hosed with an hour left and there's no chance to fix it you probably should quit, but unless the medics drag you off they will not let you. And when you do turn in a piece of metal that's about as close to a knife as the average rock they say "we commend you for sticking with it to the end" or something similar with "commend".
When we watch any other reality show, when things go bad we say you can't quit because you need to "get commended".
