- Today we are going to talk about the 7M-GTE, the predecessor to the legendary 2JZ and 1JZ. This amazing Toyota motor has an amazing story to tell! This engine is often neglected, but is definitely worth checking out if you're in the market for an engine that can handle some serious power.

There was a reason they swapped the 7M-GTE for the 1JZ-GTE in the Twin Turbo R. I blew up three 7M-GE's in my Cressida before I went to the 1J thanks to the head torque issue (and when I did it, the info about the head bolts wasn't known).
Also, the 1JZ and 2JZ were both released at the same time. 1JZ for the JZA70, the 2JZ went into the JZS147 Aristo. The more you know. 😎👍
Yeah, they were kinda a piece of junk before all the issues were known.

The knowledge of the 7M torque issues goes back to the 1980s. YOU just didn’t know about it.

Also the 2JZGE was basically the 8MGE, because when I swapped in my 2JZGE I reused all my 7MGE electronics, including the flapper door MAF, minus the igniter and O2 sensors. It even passed the sniffer smog test!
Wow. Didn't know that. Now I'm tempted to try pulling a junkyard 2j for my mk3. I think there's at least one OBD1 sc300 at Pull-A-Parts

There is another hidden gem by Toyota called the 1FZ. It’s a 4.5L petrol Straight 6 that can be found on Toyota Land cruisers! They use the engines for sand dune hill climbs in Dubai! People there are pushing crazy power figures out of them! There is a video out there of a 1FZ swapped GT86

At the introduction of the 7M, that black jza70 is actually 1jzgte powered. The sound is clear as day.

I had a 7mgte in my 93 miata it was a ton of fun
I had a Cressida. I built a 6mg. 7mg block with a 5mg head. The 2 valves per cylinder handled heat on the turbo better and it fucking ripped. I miss that build. Lost it to the cops. Forever in my heart.
BUT there's is even more crazier engine than 2JZ/1JZ AND 7mGTE it's 1FZ-FE 4.5 liter inline six engine :D 99% people never heard of it

@@tonykujat1972 Keep it as stock or with proper mods and internal upgrade. It's very rare to see one in Asia these days. It's easier to spot a Huracan than a Mk3 Supra.

Rn I have a mk3 supra 7m with .5 over pistons turbo rods , metal head gasket arp studs turbo cams wit a gt35 turbo and I'm gonna have it running on fuel tech soon
Making me wonder about putting the 4.0l Landcruiser engine into something meant for a 2JZ, the engines look identical externally.

something "neat" about the 7mgte is its ability to produce lots of torque due to being undersquare, meaning its stroke is larger than its bore, where the jz engines are equal. This is what gives the 7mgte its unique sound and high torque output.
Hurts it if you wanna turn rpms though.

@Wesee Thetruth thats true. i still rev mine out to 7,200. im sure with shimless buckets you could go a bit higher, but that's still nothing compared to alot of engines
The 7M-GE also came in Toyota Crowns. My dad had the MS133 Crown Royal Saloon, dark blue interior with auto swing air con, seperate electric seats and rear fridge.
The American pronunciation of "Cressida" is priceless.

7M-GTE , can't say much about it coz its harder to source due to the majority of the car being sold in US at the time of Asian economic is slowly peaking up.
Outside of US the majority of the car didn't suffer any major failure until much later when people start cranking up the boost and not using the proper fuel for it.
Car modding culture during that period deferred a lot between in US and Asia. Resulting in many 7M-GTE owners were Asian guys with mid life crisis who can't afford a Porsche or Ferrari🤭 thus resulting in many or almost all aren't abused until we get to mid 90s when the younger generation who probably inherited the cars from their old man and start to crank up the boost and filling up with the lowest cheapest 95 grade fuel. That's when the failures that u have mentioned started to see on regular basis.
That's my own experience around where I grew up during early 90s. Great that sumone did a content on it and thanks for steering up sum fond memories about the car and motor.
The mk3 supra looks great...doesn't get enough love. It was my favorite car to use in gran turismo 3 days.

I went through seven 7Ms in my 3 MKIIIs before finally going 2J. I loved them, but they would blow headgaskets then get rod knock after. I eventually bought a built 7MGTE and it was a BEAST. Zero complaints until I had to sell them all eventually

I believe it was the first twin turboed jdm motor in general. At least the first dohc twin turbo jdm.

I have a mk3 supra and I got rid of the 7M and put A 2JZ in it, I was getting tired of rebuilding the 7M after the 3rd time it blew up I said screw it

I had an 85 Cressida with a 5MGE as my first car in high school ~2003. That car was an absolute tank.
Wasn’t my first car but jr year had a 5spd celica supra. Used to slide that thing almost daily leaving the school parking lot.
With todays tech and all the issues being solved the 7m is amazing before all of today’s knowledge I understand swapping in a jz my 7m should be making 600whp soon waiting on fab stuff 😁

Everyone knows the roots of the 2JZ. But I’m calling BS. Much respect and props to the 7MGE and 1JZ. But If the 7MGE is “better” as videos title screen says then why doesn’t the 7MGE hold any of the records the 2JZ holds and the records the 2JZ continues to break over and over?
Including 1100 plus wheel horse power on a completely stock unopened long block, fastest import motor and fastest 6 cylinder in the world. Fastest import and 6 cylinder with a manual transmission. Fastest import 6 speed (V160 paired with a 2JZ) Fastest standing mile time. Fastest 1/2 mile time. Fastest 1/4 mile times. Fastest top speeds. ETC ETC ETC.

I put a NO-JZ engine sticker in place of the original 7M-GE one
The 7M's were crap - i remember techs seeing them come in - and they would all say "headbolts, headgasket and new head" - same tune ford techs were singing about the 6.0 powerstrokes. I wouldn't compare a 7M to a JZ of any sort. Any engine that requires "Bulletproofing" just to maintain dependability is junk and flawed from the factory imo.
I understand that they had issues from factory and kind of a big one at that. But every motor series needs "bulletproofing" to be reliable after a point. For example your not gonna run 20 lbs of boost on a completely stock high milage LS motor. Your going to have to gap your rings and likely get new rods. Its the same with pretty much every production motor.
@@cvolkmedia Its really not - you can more than double output on a cummins 6.7 without needing to do anything other than feeding it more fuel/air. Its not needed to even do headstuds unless you go with a crazy compound setup (pushing 60+psi of boost) and putting down well north of 1000hp and that job doesn't require you to take the head off... You can more than double the power of a 2J with stock headbolts... SR20 same thing - where as the 7M has problems staying together totally stock - and thats not just the boosted 7M's as well. Its a design flaw (a big one) and its inexcusable and for good reason why people who bought the MKIII's here new weren't big fans. Take a car from the same era - a Z31 the VG30 was tough as nails. Not saying it can't be built up - just saying that there is a reason why they were looked over for the longest time - design flaws - poor head sealing.
7M-GTE, "A reliable 450hp isn't out of the question". Saab's B234 be like; "Hold my beer." This baby can handle 600hp without even opening the engine. Just slap a big ol' turbo on it and injectors and pray to god the gearbox does not fancy making itself a 5 neutrals box.

7m's had spark plug galley gasket issues too. Great motors, but some issues for sure.
It's heavy cast iron block. 2jz all the way it's still competitive with today's best. If toyota wants to make a 3jz that'd be awesome.

After years of owning a Mk3 Supra and heavily modifying it. I had to have the 2jz platform. So with that being said I also had to have the best transmission GR T-56. So now I own 4 lexus Gs300 cars with the holy grail 2jz engine. 5 2jz running engine's and I love each one. Just a wonderful piece of machinery.😃🏁🏁🏁🏁🏁🏁

Literally, just take the head off, buy oem head studs, or bolts however they come. Then torque them 10 to 20 ftlb more depending on how much the torque spec is. Seems like the only problem is the head gasket.
They also have problems with their oil system. More specific, the weak spring in the pressure relieve valve
