Turtle-Warp Speed on the KL Monorail - EXPERIENCE KUALA LUMPUR FROM ABOVE!

  • I've ridden on the Kuala Lumpur LRT and the MRT at Warp Speed. Now it's time for a ride on the KL Monorail - perhaps at Turtle Speed. Stretching 8.6 kilometers over 11 stations, the KL Monorail takes passengers through the heart of commercial, downtown Kuala Lumpur from KL Sentral through tourist-heavy Bukit Bintang and Chow Kit all the way to the terminal station of Titiwangsa.
    It's not the fastest way to get around Kuala Lumpur. Nor is it the most comfortable. But it is one of the most interesting, since the Monorail line zigs and zags and makes ninety-degree turns and takes its sweet old time, providing great views into a variety of classic Kuala Lumpur neighborhoods.
    You get overhead looks into several beautiful temples, the Klang River, lots of modern highways, and the ever-growing skyline of this fast-developing mega-city.
    As you putter along, you can make mental notes of a dozen restaurants or shopping malls or tourist attractions you might want to visit later on. Forget guided tours in a boring old bus. Ride the Monorail on your own and see it from high above.
    Cheers,
    Douglas (AKA The Cycling Canadian)

    Fun fact:The KL Monorail used to be operated with a newer 4 coach train but due to reliability issues they went back to using the older 2 coach trains.
    Not only that,the bus station you mention at the Titiwangsa station is called Terminal Pekeliling and it is a terminal station for 2 gokl free bus line(red line and blue line),402 bus to Maluri and 302 bus to KLCC.
    And that's a really informative video you got there! Hope it does help other tourists that comes to Malaysia.😊
    Lastly,I do hope that you shoot videos about KTM and GOKL free busses because there are not that many video about these on TH-cam.

      Thanks for the info and insight. I had no idea that the Go KL buses went that far. The only Go KL I've ever taken is the purple line, because it starts right at Pasar Seni, and I wanted to try it for fun. I just checked out their route map online, and their other lines go all over the city. I'm surprised. I don't generally take buses, but I should check them out. 🙂

    I have learnt a lot of useful English words and phrases from you. Of the all videos made by tourists and expatriates about Malaysia, I found that yours are the easiest and most interesting. Yet the contents are the simple things you do every day during your stay but the way how you narrate them made them appealing. Some of the information you had mention were unknown even for the locals. I guess the saying is indeed true, "You can sometimes find extraordinary stories in many random, ordinary things."
    I understand that you have longed to return to Bangladesh but I do hope that you will come back some day and continue what you are doing now. It's kind of old school but I loved them.
    I wish you the best of luck.

    • @PlanetDoug
      @PlanetDoug  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank you very much. When I started making videos, I never considered that people might find TH-cam videos useful for learning English, but I can see how that might be true. I used to teach English, and I always thought a complete English course based on watching a TV show like Seinfeld or Friends would be an excellent idea. TH-cam videos might function the same way. 🙂
      I also come from the point of view keeping a journal in words and pictures. My whole life, I've always kept a diary and I record my trips by taking pictures and writing down my experiences. I don't write about HUGE things but the small things I encounter and the everyday experiences I have. And I guess when I started making videos, I naturally ended up following the same pattern. I like to just walk around local neighborhoods and explore. That way, I never run out of places to visit.
      My main reason for wanting to return to Bangladesh is to take trips by ferry on the rivers. I went on a few small boat trips out of Dhaka, but I would like to do more. Maybe someday I can. 😃

    Hi, here in KL the metro system works as this;
    Where there’s dot between different lines, it’s an Interchange station, u don’t have to exit station building; If it’s between rapidkl lines, u don’t have to buy new ticket (same operator). If it’s between Rapidkl & KTM, u need to purchase a new ticket (different operator).
    Where there’s walking man sign, it’s a Connecting station, u have to exit station building and transfer to the next line.
    U can refer to the transit map’s Legend. Cheers!

    • @PlanetDoug
      @PlanetDoug  5 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      I kind of figured that out just the other day. I was on the new Sungai Buloh-Kajang line and I noticed that the announcements used two different words: Interchange and Connecting.
      As you pointed out, at an Interchange station, you can go directly from one line to the next line without having to exit and without having to buy a new ticket.
      But a Connecting station is different. As you said, it is indicated on the legend by the symbol of a man walking. And that makes perfect sense.
      Now that I know the difference, I will always listen for the voice and see if she says Interchange or Connecting station. 😄

    I really enjoy your videos and the time you take to research some of the places you go. I agree about the monorail. There was a time when the world thought they were the transport of the future. I first rode the KL Monorail in 2007 when it still had a little bit of that "new monorail smell" so to speak. Nowadays it's not as attractive as it used to be. "Trundling" is the perfect word to describe how it moves. The thing that has always struck me about the KL Monorail is that it seems so temporary with the way it's constructed -- everything screwed together and all. It's obviously not temporary though. Other commenters have noted that there used to be 4-car trains. I forget what happened but they had to be sidelined for some reason and the monorail went back to the 2-car trains. The new 4-cars were nice. The ride was a little smoother but the speed was pretty much the same as I remember.

    • @PlanetDoug
      @PlanetDoug  5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I wonder why they removed the 4-car trains. It was probably quite expensive to make them and put them into service. Once they had them operating, they must have needed a very strong reason to take them out again. I assume it was a budget thing. They probably crunched the numbers and decided the added expense wasn't worth the ridership. But who knows?
      I definitely got the sense that things were falling apart on my little ride that day. Even the door I tried to use to get on was broken. It only opened halfway and then slammed shut again. That poor guy panicked when he was separated from his family and he ran for the next door like his life depended on it. 😃
      And on the return trip, I could see everything the driver was doing, and it was clear his controls weren't responding smoothly - or at all in some cases. He kept having to jam his thumb down on the button to open the doors. It often wouldn't work, and he had to press it again and again. At one point, a service dude got on board and sat at the controls and took pictures of the computer control screens. I guessed he was trying to diagnose certain problems on the train.
      But the monorail does have its charms. It's kind of nice to see a human driver actually having to get up and walk from one end of the train to the other so he can drive in the other direction. And the train never seemed to stop at the right place. He had to keep nudging the controls to jerk the train forward a couple of feet to get it lined up with the exit openings.
      I did a bit of reading afterwards about monorails, and it seems that they have been successful in some places - mainly in China. But my experience of them around the world has always been that they never really worked as they were supposed to, and then they were made obsolete by faster and larger subways systems below ground. But they keep them running, and they just "trundle" along doing their thing - looking futuristic despite being quite primitive. I associate them strongly with amusement parks, and when I ride on them in a city, I still feel like I'm on vacation or something. 😄

    19:00 Titiwangsa is an interchange/transfer station, you can transfer from the Monorail to the LRT via a dedicated transfer link bridge without exiting the station and use the same token.

    • @PlanetDoug
      @PlanetDoug  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I see that on the route map now. It is marked as an interchange station. I didn't realize that at the time, and I never saw any kind of a bridge between them. But I wasn't looking for it either. I just exited the station at the first exit I saw. If I go back, I'll have to look around and see where that link bridge is. 🙂

      Now that I seem to have started a series about public transportation, I definitely have to take a ride on a KTM train. 🙂 I've taken them before, of course, and I learned that I had to check the schedule first before I go down to the platforms. Then I can keep the waiting time down to a minimum.
      But I guess the KTM is serving a different type of customer - someone going a bit farther perhaps. I think of it as more like a regional train - linking other cities to Kuala Lumpur - so the schedule wouldn't be as tight and regular as a subway system.
      I've certainly had some adventures on the KTM. I just didn't record it on video at the time. This is the latest one:

      That was my guess as well - that the windows were broken by kids throwing rocks. But that seemed so out-of-character for Malaysians. And there were so many broken windows. Every train had a lot of them. It seemed strange that so many kids would be throwing rocks. I could see it happening in other countries, but Malaysians seem too friendly and law-abiding to throw so many rocks. 😄

    • @PlanetDoug
      @PlanetDoug  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes, I should do that. I've actually ridden on the KTM quite a few times in the past. As Mohd K mentioned in this thread, I even shot a bit of video on a KTM trip to Port Klang and back. (It wasn't like a full-on vlog or anything. I was just playing around with my camera at the time.) I often took the ferry from Port Klang to Sumatra, so I rode the KTM there to catch the boat. And, of course, I've used the KTM line to go up to Batu Caves. I've even taken it to Mid Valley Megamall a couple of times.
      I quickly learned how infrequently the trains run, so I tried to check the schedule online and then show up on the platform at the right time. But it usually didn't work out, and I'd have to wait 30 or 40 minutes until the next train. 😄 For a trip to Klang, that's fine. But waiting 30 minutes just to go one stop to Mid Valley was a bit much, so I stopped doing that.
      It's too bad I wasn't shooting video a while back, because I had a big adventure on the KTM not long ago. I returned from Sumatra on the ferry with my touring bike, and I learned that it is now possible to take bicycles on the KTM at certain times and from certain stations. So I did that, and things didn't really go well. 🙂
      No video, but I did write about that experience at length:

      I remember that I was very surprised the very first time I rode on the monorail to KL Sentral. I was confused because I assumed I could just walk over to the other line and get on the next train. I walked around for a bit trying to find the right tunnel or stairway, but I couldn't find it. All I could see were the turnstiles to exit.
      I eventually spoke to a guard or an employee, and they explained that I had to exit the station, cross through the mall, and then buy another token for the next line. I breeze through that process now because I have more experience, but I was very confused that first time. 🙂
      My favorite thing about the Monorail is the way the tracks twist and turn through the city. You can really see that in the video of my return trip as the tracks zig and zag like a roller coast ride.

    • @PlanetDoug
      @PlanetDoug  5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I must have missed the connecting tunnel or platform. I didn't see it at all. Then, again, I wasn't looking for it. When I arrived at Titiwangsa, I didn't know it linked up with the other lines at all. I only figured it out when I saw another train leaving from the other station.
      I've got the legends for the system finally figured out now. If there is a symbol like a double arrow, it means it is an interchange station, and you can walk directly from one to the other. But if the symbol is a walking man, it is a connecting station, and you have to exit the station, walk to the other station, and re-enter with a new token.

    Hi, Correction on the fare info. You can actually use just 1 fare (token or card) for the trip. There was no need to buy new token for the trip from pasar seni up to titiwangsa. The whole lrt, mrt & monorail fare are integrated. So just purchase 1 token from point A to point B. As for the card just tap it once when entering the station & once again upon exit at the end of the journey at any of the station. Hope this info is useful for you

    • @PlanetDoug
      @PlanetDoug  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for the info. 😃
      I think the process you described works for some trips. It depends on whether you can physically go from one train to the other without exiting the station.
      But at KL Sentral, for example, I don't think there is any way to do that. The only way to get from the Kelana Jaya Line to the Monorail is to exit one station (by inserting your token or tapping your card) and then you have to insert a new token or tap your card again to enter the Monorail station.
      Apparently, I was wrong about the Titiwangsa station. That station is a true interchange station and it is possible to go from one to the other without exiting the station. There is a direct linking bridge, so you don't have to buy a new token or swipe your card again.
      There seem to be two types of transfer points. One is called an Interchange station and the other is a Connecting station. At an Interchange station, you can just go from one to the other without buying a new token. But at a Connecting station, you have to physically exit one and enter the other - by paying a new fare. That's how I understand the system anyway. 😃

      I've since been studying the RapidKL route map like a detective on a case, and I see that the Hang Tuah station is a true Interchange (transfer) station. But it looks to me like the Titiwangsa station is also a transfer station. I didn't know that at the time. Someone told me that in the comments, and on the route map it is also listed as a true Interchange (transfer) station to the Ampang/SriPetaling lines. I didn't see the connecting bridge when I was there, but people tell me it exists. 😄
      Yep, it's always Homer. You'd think the people of Springfield would learn to keep Homer away from everything, but then you wouldn't have a show. Homer has to get in there and create massive problems and then somehow save the day every time. Though if I remember right, he stopped the runaway train by nearly destroying the entire town with an anchor. 😃 "Donuts! Is there anything they can't do?"

    • @DeenDesperado
      @DeenDesperado 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@PlanetDoug Yes, it's true transfer "station" instead of "line". What was I thinking? Haha. For real sightseeing enjoyment I suggest you take the Sri Petaling line from Masjid Jamek right up to Putera Heights, which is also a truer than true transfer station. You don't have to switch platforms, let alone station to get onto another train (the driverless Kelana Jaya line) that will then take you back to Masjid Jamek. Since you don't get off at any station along the way I wonder if you have to pay anything more than just the Masjid Jamek platform charges, 1 ringgit perhaps? Not so sure about it. You might wanna ask the Rapid KL personnel there. Don't want to get you into any trouble though. Haha. Anyway enjoy your stay here in KL!

      Thanks! I'm very fond of the KL Monorail now. A bit slow and a bit broken-down, but friendly and interesting. 🙂
      I've always liked that episode of the Simpsons. I think a lot of people list it as one of the best episodes in the entire series. It captures the mob mentality of the people of Springfield. They'll fall for anything as long as it comes with a catchy song.

    Should be called the Tilt-train!

    • @PlanetDoug
      @PlanetDoug  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      That would be a good name for it. It does tilt, just like a roller-coaster. It feels a bit weird at times because a roller-coaster tilts because it is going so fast. But the Monorail moves pretty slowly. I don't think it really needs to tilt at all. But when they designed it, they probably thought it would go much faster when it was in regular use. 🙂

    Thanks for another interesting vid. How long was the journey from end to end? Have you managed to speak to some locals to get some local inside knowledge? Might help with future exploring off the beaten, well-trodden, tourist trails. All the best

    • @PlanetDoug
      @PlanetDoug  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The trip from KL Sentral to Titiwangsa on the Monorail took just over 26 minutes. (Same thing for the return trip, of course.) Who knows? Maybe I should post the entire trip in regular time - not sped up. It might be interesting for some people to see Kuala Lumpur from the train window at normal speed. Then you can make out more details and see more.
      On previous trips to Kuala Lumpur (my first visits here), I met a lot more people and got local insider knowledge and that kind of thing. But not on this visit so far. I don't mind, though. Sometimes when you connect with local people, the experience can start to feel like you are on a guided tour, if you know what I mean. It can be more fun sometimes to wander around on your own and discover things yourself. You probably miss a lot, but it feels more real, if that makes any sense. 🙂

      Yes, it's definitely slower than the LRT or MRT (or even the KTM). But it has its charms. Actually, I think of the Monorail as exactly like a train at a fun fair. I only ride on the Monrorail for fun to see some of the neighborhoods of Kuala Lumpur. If I actually want to go somewhere, I'll take something else. 😀

    What i dont like about Monorail, its shaking too much :(

    • @PlanetDoug
      @PlanetDoug  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      That's very true. Riding on the Monorail felt like riding on a bus - I was thrown from side to side and I had to hold on tight (even though it was moving slowly). It even bounced up and down quite a bit. That's why it was so hard to hold my camera steady. The LRT/MRT trains are much smoother.
      I keep thinking there must be a big advantage to monorails versus regular trains. Why else would so many cities build one? Are they cheaper? I don't really know.

  • @chinthomas6854

      Technically, each train IS riding on one single rail. You see two rails because there are trains going in two directions. But each train is riding on just one of them.
      It's like two separate train tracks - one for trains going from KL Sentral to Titiwangsa, and one for trains going from Titiwangsa back to KL Sentral. But each track consists of only one rail. Does that make sense? 🙂
