    Blade was the first rated R marvel movie. Blade saved Marvel. If Blade tanked at the box office, there wouldn't have been a marvel universe.
    Snipes is an actual expert in martial arts eith black belts in several different martial arts. He was perfect for the role.

      Let me *cough cough* chime in for a moment or two.
      You're correct about his natural speed and reflexes with a machine and programming not seeing his movements ..
      That's exactly why film production s many years later developed the "phantom camera" and 15_years later afterwards the "hyperspectral" cameras that has over 3000_mega pixels to capture every deca-second..

      The best thing Marvel did was not have a hand in films 1 or 2. They wanted nothing to do with Blade, and that is also seen with the comic books. The movie brought Blade back to life for Marvel.

    I agree that Blade is both a staple in Black film and a staple for occult films. Late 90s into early 2000s, saw an increased interest in vampire, werewolf, and witchcraft. This film not only came during the highlight of that niche, but it starred one of Black Hollywood's beloved movie stars - Wesley Snipes. Growing up, my siblings watched the Blade trilogy all the time. I was a scaredy cat (literally 3-4 when this came out), so I blocked out a lot of the movies. It's been years since I've watched any of the films, so I'm finally giving it a proper rewatch with you all
    Edit: I'm with Brandon lol Was not supposed to have seen any of these movies when they came out

    • @dunbarf2413

      There was an increased interest in vampires, werewolves, witches, warlocks and monsters during the late 1950s through the 1980s tons of movies. 2000s was just continuing the trend by putting a new spin on it...due to writers like Anne Rice (Interview With The Vampire), Stephanie Myers (Twilight), Stephen King, Movie producers revisiting Bram Stokers Dracula, others updating The Wolfman, Frankenstein, etc.

      No one really cared whether it was black or not. Blade was just an awesome movie with an awesome character that people around the world loved and still do to this day. There were other movies with black characters as well. As long as the movies were good, people would watch them regardless of the skin the characters had. Now everything is about what shade someone's skin is and what percentage of races there are and what forced message they want to shove down people's throats...

    • @candykane6480
      @candykane6480 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @Pumpkin0_0 This is a very dismissive reply, which contradicts statements from people who worked in the industry during that time (Halle Berry, Denzel Washington, Samuel Jackson, etc.). Two things can be true at once. There were definitely Marvel fans, occult fans, action/thriller fans, and fans who were excited to see a Black lead - Wesley Snipes, at that - who all made this movie a box-office success

    • @candykane6480
      @candykane6480 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @dunbarf2413 I stand corrected. Either way, it's still a classic because of the popularity of vampire flicks at the time of its release. Snipes' star power also broadened the target audience of the movie

      That hasn't stopped being the case. Millions of white people watched Black Panther. Some media outlets maybe tried to put out the idea that "white people won't watch a movie with a black hero, or with a mostly black cast" but that is just not true. Media orgs do try to stir up controversy though, to generate more engagement and make them more money, so I guess that is where the the idea that whites won't watch a movie with a black main character came from, but it's just nonsense.

Being a Black male preteen back then, every black male teen I knew wanted to look as cool as Blade and wanted to imitate his persona. That year's Halloween was crazy. But growing up in the 90s, having such a big star play Blade was huge for me. He was my Black Panther if that makes sense. Blade was the revelation that movies could become the new media for all the cartoons and comics.
    After Blade we saw many pop ups: X-men (3 movies), very bad fantasic four (2 movies), we saw Hulk (2003), Punisher (2004). Hell we even got Ben Affleck as Daredevil in 2003. Sony also came out with the Tobey McGuire Spider man.
    It wasn't until Iron Man (2008) that Marvel had figured out the correct formula - But Blade was the first one to do it right :D

      Wouldn't really put it all down to Blade - although it certainly had impact when DC dropped the ball.
      The 80's & 90's were full of comic book / super hero films - the 80's ones were largely forgettable but big mainstream success came with the shift towards darker comic book adaptions starting with Tim Burtons Batman & Batman Returns in the early 90's - followed by a darker take on the Ninja Turtles than many would have expected from the cartoon, although not the comics themselves (resulting in 2 sequels) - also had the adult targeted Crow adaption in 94 (which also ended up with several sequels and a spin off TV series).
      By mid-90's there was a bit of a lull with comic book adaptions at the box office after this early boom, with cheap cash ins or films that disregarded key elements of the source material (like Judge Dread taking off his helmet in 95, and the poorly received Spawn in 97) but the first Marvel property to hit big was actually Men In Black (also in 97 - and a hit despite itself taking certain liberties with the source material) - a year before Blade, and only Marvel following a buy out, rather than a Marvel original property.
      Blade then followed up by going firmly after the audience that would have been in their early teens for the 2 Tim Burton Batman films, who were now 18+ by 98 and had been turned off by the tonal shift that series took with Batman Forever and Batman & Robin (which had gone back to the campier tone similar to the 60's TV show - possibly they had been inspired by the success of the Mask, which came out in 94 and was pretty huge after selling itself as an out and out comedy film & downplaying it's comic book origins - and had hoped to capture that audience while keeping the audience that Tim Burton had cultivated with his films - but if so it didn't work) - so it's not really much of a surprise Blade did well, because it delivered what that age group wanted / expected given the tone of the comic book films they had grown up with, and what they weren't getting elsewhere.
      And it was really the back to back success of these films (Men in Black in 97 and Blade in 98), while DC floundered with Batman & Robin in 97, that set up Marvel properties for even greater success with X-men & Spiderman a few years later - those 2 hits just as DC lost its way certainly got the big film studios interested in picking up other Marvel licences when they saw an opportunity to pull in the audience DC had somehow lost - and which those 2 successes had shown Marvel properties could do.
      Saying that, sometimes overlooked is the extent of Blades cultural impact beyond comic book adaptions - it did help lay the ground work for the early 2000's superhero / comic book film boom but also inspired something of a Vampire film boom a bit later - Underworld and BloodRayne series both starting around the time of Blade 3 and various elements of lore / world building in those franchises are not a million miles away from what you had in Blade - not to mention the look of the films / main character drawing a direct line through to the Matrix in 99 (trench coats, shades, guns, supernatural strength & speed - including bullet dodges - all combined with martial arts close combat fighting).
      Blade was the right film at the right time - if DC had kept Batman on the same path as the early 90's films, maybe Blade would have found it more difficult to stand out and wouldn't have had a disenfranchised early adult audience out looking for something new - and maybe the studios that bought up the Marvel properties wouldn't have been so willing to pay what they did to effectively keep Marvel afloat, if they didn't see opportunities to cash in on the audience DC seemed no longer willing to cater to after building it up in the first place.

    Max Brooks, the man who wrote the book World War Z (not the movie it was un-based on), also wrote a comic where there was a zombie apocalypse in a world where there were also vampires. The vampires didn't care cause the zombies ignored them, until they realized all their food was disappearing. Then they had to fight the zombies.

    I can't speak to a black cultural perspective, so as a white woman Blade was and is a top notch vampire series for me with standout atmosphere, story, action, and characters. I grew up in a time and place where the ideology was "color doesn't matter" compared to the more recent "ignoring color is racist". Interested to see the next wave of "correct think" that will be given unto us in the coming years. Regardless, I love, love Blade and am so excited for this reaction. 🗡️

    The intro to this movie is my favorite intro to any film I've ever watched. Absolutely flawness. Intriguing, cool, strong, menacing, dark, crude, this movie has everything. The dialogue is insane, funny, well thought out, with the right amount of edge, the pacing it's crazy as hell, it doesn't give you a second to wonder or to question it, it's a movie that absorbs your attention completely and doesn't let you go but doesn't overload you with information. The filming is top notch, the techniques were very new at that time, the characters are simple and straightforward, everything works, it's chromatically amazing, the lighting is amazing, and, the cherry on the top, Wesley totally owned this role. It's so good that it feels like a documentary instead of an actual action film, a 101 guide on how to kill vampires. One of the best films of all time.

    Note: Blade was black in the comic in Marvel's tomb of Dracula. Definitely not a race swap thing like they are doing now with Marvel and DC comic book films. Originally, they were trying to make a Black Panther film back with Wesley Snipes, but that never came to be until the late 2010s with the late Chadwick Boseman playing the Black Panther instead. Add don't forget about the movie Spawn based off another comic book character who was a black man made famous by Michael Jai White, who just like Wesley Snipes, was trained in martial arts.

    IMAGE EDITION :
    - Edit the movie with partial % of transparency (and/or text)
    - Flip the movie scene from Right to Left.
    AUDIO EDITION :
    - Put the volume of the movie lower than the volume of your microphone(not too low). (Statics, White noise & your comments , make little distortion to the audio)
    - Record the audio of your reaction separately from the audio of the movie, that way you can mute/edit the audio/image of the movie without muting/editing the audio/image of your reaction.
